She was still number one for 77& 78 and then tried to pull it together in 79 but played horribly in W & Open finals all by nearly same score 6-4, 6-4,6-4 , 6-3 . you DO KNOW they are playing with wood rackets right? compared to today's rackets and strings it would be like comparing a wet paper towel to super powerful strong titanium! if everything players back then were quote better TENNIS players because they had to use strategy, variety, learn how to construct a point and couldn't bludgeon the ball for winners because of the strings and rackets! also, the head of the rackets were super small back then, so the players had to hit the ball in the center of the racket EVERY TIME, EVERY SINGLE STROKE! unlike today's players and today's rackets! evert could and would be a champion in any era... end of story....
David Illingsworth no it wasn’t. They are using wood racquets where a player had to generate their own pace. The game back then was about angles and shot placement; not like today where it is all about power and crushing the ball. I remember playing high school tennis with wood racquets. It took a lot of skill to do well with since those racquets were unforgiving for not hitting the ball in the middle of the racquet each time.
i have always said and will always say players "back then" were quote better TENNIS players then today's players, today's players are athletes who happen to play tennis...

The level of womens tennis was really bad in those days.
David illingsworth-------kind of true.....by todays standards...definitely true.............usually just one of the top 5...would win a grand slam tournament.....there were what 3 or 4 women that won the titles back then.....evert, king, goolagong, wade...a few by court and only 2 by navratilova......
you DO KNOW they are playing with wood rackets right? compared to today's rackets and strings it would be like comparing a wet paper towel to super powerful strong titanium! if everything players back then were quote better TENNIS players because they had to use strategy, variety, learn how to construct a point and couldn't bludgeon the ball for winners because of the strings and rackets! also, the head of the rackets were super small back then, so the players had to hit the ball in the center of the racket EVERY TIME, EVERY SINGLE STROKE! unlike today's players and today's rackets! evert could and would be a champion in any era... end of story....
David Illingsworth Not really.
