    You need your fridge and freezer and furnace much more than you need lights, tv, and computer. Imagine a winter storm power outage for 36 hours.

    Good "how-to" for those who might want to power more than three outlets and some real world "Know how much power you need" examples. Our "1100 watt" microwave actually draws a measured 1892 watts so it doesn't get used unless a big enough gas generator is in use.
    We're the third owners of this now 46 year old house and I was certain there had been changes/additions since the original labels were placed on the breaker panel. I spent HOURS verifying what was on each breaker and then printed it out on a sheet of letter size paper that I could post next to the breaker panel. The short notes on the panel are rarely complete and often only marginally informative (learned from houses I've renovated). Some conbinations made no sense at all.
    Some examples:
    4. (20A) Washer, basement bath light, basement closet light, basement hallway
    The clothes washer is at the far end of the house from the basement bath. Easy place to add a wire to a breaker?
    24. (15A) Garage lights, garage door openers, garage inside wall outlet, outside lights over driveway, laundry room lights & outlets (including freezer), screened porch, corner floodlight over lower drive
    The "outside lights" are at the opposite end of the huse from the "corner floodlight".
    26. (15A) Disposal, family room and kitchen lights, master bedroom closet, outlet by master bedroom closet
    None of these were marked with more than the first item on the original list of breaker assignments. Helps to have two people and some FRS handie-talkies when you're doing the search ;-)
    I needed the info for my homebrew "solar backup". 2000 watt pure sine wave inverter, 420AH 12 volt battery bank, 250 watt solar panel on MPPT charge controller to keep the batteries charged and I have more solar panels to add if we're in a long term (more than 1 day) power outage. We only run limited things: fridge, LED lighting over the kitchen counter, central heat (max power for it is 485 watts). Without the furnace, we're good for about 16 hours with the internet and laptops on. That's fine for "wait until daylight" power so I'm not out in a thunderstorm or in the dark at 30F and shoveling 7" of snow to get to a generator. Our longest outage at this location was 16 hours so the generator would only be needed on a longer outage during a period without sun (cloudy, rain, snow).
    The "solar generator" boxes have become so common that I'm finding online closeouts on them - some even of a known brand (Kyng, 288wh battery, 500 watt pure sine wave inverter for $99US; "no name" boxes for $50-$80, sometimes with a solar panel included but no specs listed for the panel - I have a couple of these on order and they have finally made it to the US. One from Amsterdam via Miami and the other from Yanwen, China via New York). In my research I found a (maybe the) Chinese manufacturer and their configuration, ordering and shipping calculators - I could have the generic box in my choice of colors and with my own "brand" on it ;-)

    Great vid., excellent experimentation. Pushing your stuff to the limits is the only way. So it was the furnace that blew it? Very much enjoyed. One of these days you'll have that HUGE break-threw in a self contained home electrical operating sys. I'm rooting for you. Good Luck. BTW, I'm a novice but, with some electrical/electronic schooling so I understand a little also, I couldn't find a "power it" for sale on the web. :(

    Well, thanks for the video, I won't be pushing mine to see what it can do. The fuses soldered to the board is brutal! I did run it at 380-360 watts for over an hour and a half yesterday, then after it shut off at 9.7V I ran 100W for another half hour. In total, according to the display it delivered 64 Ah... very impressive.
    Oh, and if you have a Princess Auto near you, they carry 60 amp fuses like the one you replaced.
    One thing I noticed about the heat sinks - I have a motomaster 600W inverter that's capable of putting out 700 watts for a short period, and the heatsinks in it are WAY smaller than these. I thought the heat dissipation in this looked pretty good.

    After replacing fuses and mosfets, did you continue with a two prong or three prong suicide cord?
    The old modified sine wave inverters would blow up using three prong, because neutral and ground are joined at the house panel but NOT in the inverter. Therefor a dead short!
    I noted when you added the second cord it was three prong and the unit blew. Theoretically, a pure sine inverter should allow connection to household system with three prong since neutral and ground are joined in the inverter, unlike floating neutral of a modified sine inverter.
    Thanks,
    Fred

    I also have a power it bought on clearance for like $188 or something silly. I used to use it to charge my batteries and run a work light on job sites before we hooked up our service. Recently I hauled it out and I don't have any 120v output. the screen displays 110v but the receptacle is dead 0v. I have not opened it up yet to troubleshoot. But I do remember seeing a video of this exact problem a while back think I could find it now? nope lol. Also man does this thing rundown quick. I'm tempted to install a battery disconnect when I open it.

    So my suicide cord should have NO ground connected, correct?
    And if I were to connect a small solar 60w or 100w all power panel to charge it.. would I use the 8mm plug? Or the left or right Anderson plugs?
    I assume the 8mm should work as it is an input..
    Thank you so much!

    Another GREAT video. Just an idea...Is it possible one or both of your suicide cables were made with backwards polarity? If both were backward it would work but not if one was correct and the other one backwards. I wish inverters would always have fuses on the outside or better yet use re settable fuses or breakers instead of single use fuses.
    One thing I wish you would do is start putting links to the products you are talking about into the videos. Those of us that have brains know you don't always recommend the item but I do like looking up the specs ect and maybe even find a similar item.

    You do realize that backfeeding one 120V circuit will only liven up one half of the panel so only every other breaker will get power...DOH! How do you think the double breakers generate 240 Volts by being right next to each other? Each one has a 120V hot line that is 180 degrees out of phase with the other side of the double breaker, thereby generating 240V across but only 120V from each side to neutral.

    bought mine to carry in my trailer i made behind my 45kph (disconnected governor) Motorino electric scooter motorino.ca/xms to charge as i ride and extend range without permanent modification or weight addition to scooter. just bought my powerit at walmart for $ 220 Canadian (regular $ 445 Canadian but on clearance) and your video at 15:10 mark saved me (told me how to disassemble safely) after i blew a 15amp fuse being silly experimenting with mine. it would not charge through the front round port after blowing but still seemed to function somewhat even with the 15amp blown. love watching your vids lately. and enjoy seeing all your other batteries and complete setup. liked seeing you put an extra 70Ah pack inside the powerIt. WOW!! mine has no wires connected to the ground of the front 120 sockets and i used a off-brand kill-a-watt meter to measure the volts it was 130ac volts . made my 50inch LG tv unhappy so i didn't run it for more than 1 minute. i have run my tv and rogers cable 8300HD with a modified sine 300watt xantrex no probs so i"ll probably use anderson powerplugs and the powerit bypassing the puresine 130volt, unfortunately. other testing shows that my front cigarette socket is constantly powered to the center conductor even with the front panel switch off. the panel switch only interrupts the negative ground of the socket...SEEMS REALLY WEIRD AND UNSAFE TO ME!! and i forgot to mention the exterior lights blew a circuit board trace so ill have to re-wire to something..probably the front cigarette port or the usb ports.... hey? do you know what volts the lights should take? please tell me since i cant take a measurement now. LOL if a reply takes long ill just try the lower 5volt first and if it seems dimmer than the original brightness that i remember when it did work,.. i"ll switch to 12volt. :-) and i believe i am going to switch the location of the temp probe like you did and i will add thermal paste under the components on the heatsink. thanks again,talk to ya later.
    P.S. i think i have a temporary solution to the stupid F@c%ing backlight display that only stays lit for 2 seconds www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01N1F9VUY/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=A3MV9RWGRN2O6N&psc=1

      130 volt is fine for your tv, and the no ground thing, most cheap inverter do not use one. I am using mine as we speak. love it for the price. as for the lights I beleave they are 12v because even when the battery is very dead and the board will not turn on the lights still work. o also 1000w is bs, its a 500w inverter, its 1000w if you pull 500w from inverter and 250w from both 30 amp Anderson ports on the side. thats how they get you, but for 250 bucks this thing is a steal.

    • @GoingOffGrid101
      @GoingOffGrid101  6 років тому

      thats not a bms problem, they are built to drain to keep the cells at low voltage, all power its drain like this, mine goes dead in about a month. I leave mine plugged in untill i need it.

    • @stanleymarc007
      @stanleymarc007 4 роки тому

      Going Off Grid Why would they want to keep those lithium batteries at a low voltage? Mine seems to drain to the point of not turning off. Draining them completely to an under voltage state is one of the worst things to do to 18650’s. Perhaps the parasitic draw is just part of their design but unintended? I was thinking of taking mine apart to add a cutoff switch. What are your thoughts? Also do you know what wattage solar panel would be sufficient to charge this unit in one day? Thanks
