Use some smaller hooks. I don't know how hook sizes are in America but I would be using a size 8 or 10 if you're targeting smaller species.

i used to tie line to like sticks and rocks throw them out sit there and waited for tge catfish to pick em up and just pull em in. they always swallowed me the hook so i didnt have to worry about them coming off. good eatin all day
