I do not agree with Barrie. It just happened that the composer was French, therefore they sing in French, but the story, the melodies, The structure of the music the ambiance of the entire opera and place it happened are all in Spain and Spanish. Aida has something to do with Egypt (all the mode and the story of the opera relates to Egypt) as Carmen has to do with Spain. The essence of the opera is spanish, even the music is spanish, although composed by a French Composer. So, i do not agree with him that this is a French opera. Everything in this opera is Spanish except the language (for obvious reason) and the composer.
Why is it that modern directors want to mess around with the most popular opera there is . ? I don’t personally need that when I go to the ROH . The tickets are expensive & if you don’t know the story You need to be told it clearly . If you do then I for one don’t want to waste my cash on What Barrie THINKS I want to know . The music is wonderful with or without recitative .
Well, I don’t mind directors trying something different with the old warhorses. But what I have a real problem with is that Carmen, Traviata and the like, I can see a great, amateur, nicely done production down the road if I want to. Stuff like the Ring Cycle or 20th century operas however, it’s either some idiot Eurotrash director’s modernisation or nothing! We’ve come to accept that as the norm, but when someone does a Carmen that’s a bit Regie, everyone loses their shit!
Смотрела прямую трансляцию. Ужасно разочарована! Ушла в первом же акте! Где красивые декорации, шикарные костюмы?! Все постановки Королевской Оперы были действительно Королевскими, а эта невыразительная и скучная!
When I go to the opera, I want to see it as it was created by the composer. I dont want to see Carmen smuggling cigars in a spanish sea beach, or Violetta in a kitchen. To me, 'am sorry, all this modernims sounds like bull shit. Even if I must confess that I don't diislike what I have seeN, that was not OPERA.
This guy is awful. The idea that he is tolerated in the world of Opera really doesn't say much for the future of Opera. In watching his productions I can't help but feel that he is actually trying to find every way he can to thumb his nose at the art form.

The staging of Aida is egyptian, the language of the libretto is italian but the style is french (Grand Opéra).
After watching other clips, Kosky has become my new favourite producer- I hope to see one of his shows in person someday!
The picture made me think this was going to be a Opera based on “Finding Carmen Sandiego”, what a let down.
That guy is really pretentious.
Saw this production in Frankfurt 2016, a little bit boring

Toreador is entirely Spanish tradition too?
Why mess with success.
I agree. I was so looking forward to seeing this and now I doubt I will go. I'll listen to my album instead.

I dont think anybody has ever assumed that this is a spanish opera LMFAO
I adore Barry. Saw the production in Frankfurt and I was blown away.
