Really good! It’s been a while since I saw the movie but it’s a funny isekai-esque look on identity and being a hero. Also, this won the Oscar (though tbf, the Best Animated Feature category was dire, despite Tintin being robbed of a nomination).
Speaking of which, you should watch The Adventures of Tintin (which I grew up with). It was released in the same year, directed by Spielberg, VFX by Weta and Peter Jackson, and is very Indiana Jones-esque. I grew up with the original comics so this comes highly recommended from me.
Rattlesnake Jake is one of the best animated villains ever. His design is incredible, he's super intimidating, and Bill Nighy does an amazing voice performance. Him facing Rango is basically a reunion of Davy Jones and Jack Sparrow.
I think Beans freezes in extreme stress aswell as when she's feeling threatened - so when Rattlesnake Jake is pushing her to sign her land away, she doesn't freeze because as scary as he is, she's not intimidated at all.
This movie was done by ILM the VFX company behind all the Star Wars movies, it was their 1st animated movie. If you look closely there's a few references to movies they've done, like the pics Rango makes during the campfire scene. And how one of the bats crashes, it mimics how one of the ships crashes during the trench attack in Star Wars A New Hope ;)
@@ANGELINAAHey you saw my comment! lol I have a feeling that whole scene of that attack in the canyon with the bats loosely mimics "the trench run" from Star Wars cuz they thought it would be fun lol Now you know why Rango was so cinematic, cuz the 1st and best VFX company in Hollywood made it.
This is my favourite animated movie. Johnny depp is in his element, the visuals and dialogue are superb and Bill Nighy is almost as terrifying in this movie as he is as Davy Jones! Same people who made POTC. And Timothy Olyphant as Clint Eastwood is the candle on the cake
My fav thing about Jake is that he could easily kill Rango. But he chooses to psychologically trigger him into exposing himself being like: get your fake ass out of here
Rango is one of my favorite movies of all time! It’s so clever and cinematic and has depth. Gore Verbinski did not talk down to children, but tried to raise their level of entertainment and literacy.
Hey, best part about this movie is that it was directed by the same guy who directed the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. (The first 3, not the other 2.)
Even the "I Am Nobody" line refers to old Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Westerns like "My Name is Nobody" or "The Man With No Name" -- plus that sweet Clint Eastwood Cowboy cameo. 😲😄😉
You know there’s a whole movie behind the scenes where they actually acted like the characters with props for the movie they basically made a live action version but used that set to make the animated version of it XD
i definitely recommend watching the behind the scenes content for this film because it's so interesting :,) everything from designing the characters, the process of animating it, and even the way they recorded the scenes and dialogue as theatre sets rather than in recording booths is genuinely so innovative. years later and it still holds up so phenomenally
It's also a wonderful love letter to the old wild west genre that is getting forgotten at that time. It is truly underrated compared to the big pixar and disney movies and usually fly under the radar amongst reaction youtubers. Glad my multiple request on your videos finally answered!
I guess kids weren't as dumb as they are now. Serious subject matter. Innuendos. Important messages. I feel like everyone just forgot how deep animated films used to be.
Because companies stopped making them because lower quality was cheaper and then that resulted in brain rot of an entire generation (having to grow up basically without ever developing any media literacy skills)
No, kids were still dumb back then. But movies were made to be enjoyable for both the kids and parents who had to watch along with them, instead of just 90 minute slop fests the parents turn on to distract the kids for a while.
This movie will always be special to me... I first watched it when I was hospitalized back in 2011--never heard of it until I came across it on TV. Don't know why I decided to pick this over the other programs, but I'm glad I did. The message of this movie helped get me through my depression and recovery. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Interesting that you brought up the cinematography since the cinematography consultant on this film was the GOAS Roger Deakins, he of 1917, Blade Runner 2049, Denis Villeneuve's Sicario and Prisoners, most of the Coen brothers' films, and I think all of the Daniel Craig Bond films, along with almost 80 other films.
When I was in high school (many years before this movie was made), I had a classmate named Jake that everyone called "Jake the Snake", or just "Snake". It was customary to greet him by asking "how's it going, Snake?" The funny thing was that he was the least "snake-like" person imaginable as he was big and bulky (he played on the offensive line in football) and incredibly cheerful, laid back and good-natured (he kind of looked and acted like a high school age John Candy). The first time I saw this movie, I couldn't help thinking "how's it going, Snake?" every scene that Rattlesnake Jake was in...
The visuals are top tier, excellent. It's not just the cinematography the shots in the lighting but the textures, models, the animation and the writing are all as good as it gets
honestly one of my favorite animated movies ever. so unique and strange. i love it me and my cousins will quote this movie and automatically know what were talking about haha
Roger Deakins was the director of photography, which is why the cinematography is so great! You should react to some of his other films he shot, especially O' Brother Where Art Thou? Or Sicario and Shawshank Redemption
I can't believe I didn't pick up on the significance of the chameleon being an actor when I watched this... a long time ago. In my defense, I was in many ways an idiot back then, lol.
I love this film and the DnD bit is ironic cause I literally made a character inspired by Rango and to this day is one of mine and my friend's most loved characters I have played as. Also the hair+nails look great and rockin the top🎆🤙🏾
Rango is amazing, but IMO, it's because it's surprisingly deep for an animated film. It goes into the concepts of identity and self in a way few even live action movies touch.
I love this movie. It is an absolute homage to westerns, especially spaghetti westerns, every shot is a reference to those classics of the 60‘s and 70’s. I forgot that Mad Max Fury Road took a strong inspiration from here for the water thing hahahaha.
My favorite scene in this film has to be when the posse first sets out. In most of the old spaghetti westerns, the bank gets robbed and the posse just rides off and somehow magically finds the culprits (or the scapegoats). Not here. Instead, they're riding maybe half a minute before: Spoons (Excited): "Where . . . Are we going?" Rango (Also excited): "What's that?" Spoons (Still excited): "Where are we going?" Rango: =D -> =0 -> D= Posse: *_Walking back into town_*
Cogitation is definitely a real world (the act of thinking, reflection, contemplation; also can mean the result of that, like a plan or scheme). Everything else he said in this YT commentary was real, too, or at least if he made up any words I failed to notice them. I haven't seen the full movie so can't speak to that.
Love that you watched this film but BOOO to Reece for suggesting it before watching Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and missing the best Easter Egg in this film!
if you like quippy comedy where every line is a joke you have to pay attention to otherwise you miss it, the tv show arrested development always struck me as the best at that.
You skipped over my favorite part of this movie, where Rango is flying down the highway and slams against the a windshield of a man driving a convertible, who is understandably freaked out. It's a reference to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, where Johnny Depp was also the main character.
rango was one of those movies where I saw the trailer and had zero interest it looked so weird to me but one day it aired on tv and I loved it, the story and characters were too good
You kept talking about the cinematography of a good animated movie, and I can't help but notice you haven't reacted to Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron yet!
Fun fact: you know how others in the comments have already pointed out how the actors live-acted their parts before the animators then animated accordingly? Well for the scenes where Mrs. Beans was gagged, her voice actress Isla Fisher actually tied a bandana around her mouth for those scenes. Points for dedication to the role :)
What's crazy is this movie released while my family was living in the Mojave desert, so we were like "hey, I know that thing!" through the whole movie lol
Only thing that could have made this better is having Clint Eastwood actually being the Spirit of the West. Sadly for some reason they didn't get him to do so. I mean he did a fun cameo in the film Casper I dunno why they couldn't have him voice The Spirit of the West.
This movie just feels like Johnny Depp working through a breakdown after spending too much time as Jack Sparrow, and Nickelodeon just decided to animate it.
I watched this as a kid. I thought it was great. I was able to keep up with the dialogue pretty well, but I was always reading so that is probably why.
Kids are a lot smarter and more capable of understanding things than adults often want to give them credit for. I'm not saying that they'd all pick up on and understand everything in this movie, but this is how movies for kids should be written. Talking to them, not down at them

In that moment, Jake realized Rango found true grit. Absolutely legendary line.

I loved the way Jake reacted. He knew rango had it in him and Jake seemed to have gained some respect for him in that moment alone.
Rattlesnake Jake is one of the best animated villains ever. His design is incredible, he's super intimidating, and Bill Nighy does an amazing voice performance. Him facing Rango is basically a reunion of Davy Jones and Jack Sparrow.
Pretty much, with Hans Zimmer doing the score for this film like he did with the POTC also. Triple win right there
