Thanks Katie. A lot of food for thought here. I’m not sure if this fits in your list but studying The Masters. Screen grab scenes from Movies.

Thank you so much, those are such a great suggestions! I definitely think studying the Masters can teach us so much, and the composition of movie stills are great to practice too! There's a site called FilmGrab I recommend for these! 😄

References are a huge part of my sketchbook practice as well, even if its just for a concept that ill use my own imagination to jump off from. It takes a lot of the pressure off and makes my sketchbook practice much more enjoyable. Great video!

Drawing from reference bridges the gap between observation and memory. To work from memory, you need plenty of images in your memory bank. Working from reference helps to fill it up. Someone in the comments already suggested it, but I would add the work of the masters as great references. The goal isn't to make an exact copy, but to learn why you admire that artist, and think of ways to bring those qualities to your own work.

Oooh yes that's such a great point, we fill our memories with the scenes that we observe and can then reference! And yes I totally agree, it's amazing what we can pick up when doing master studies - something I need to make more time for! Thanks so much for sharing 🥰

I love the idea of referencing your own art to redo a past painting. Might have to try that soon! I love being a member of Patreons, as a mother of young children, the decision fatigue is REAL 😂

Katie! Thanks so much for all the wonderful ideas. I am going to check out the Morten Hilmer livestream and pull out my vacation photos from Australia to spark some art projects. I know I have some photos from the Victoria Gardens and other great memories to draw from that holiday! I appreciated ALL of your additional suggestions as well. I have enjoyed using mapcrunch but haven't attempted street view on google maps (what a good idea!) I am maybe going to venture out and finally join a patreon too! I am a hobbyist, so I am quite nervous about taking the next step in my painting adventures. I just starting my learning in the last year and a half and I have a long, long way to go! I am enjoying it so much, though. Thanks again for the jewels of info. Have a lovely week; looking forward to your next video.

Thank you so much Crystal, so glad you found it helpful! Your vacation photos sound amazing, Australia is so beautiful! Totally understand about the nerves and vulnerability to take the next step with art, but I bet you won't regret it! It's amazing how much we can learn from others and find so much enjoyment too. Happy to hear you are having fun with it all, enjoy creating! 🥰

Great ideas and suggestions/references. Thinking about other resources, print catalogs and magazines...the few that still exist. My husband gets Hemmings Motor News filled with all kinds and years of cars in different colors and angles. We get a bird and flower magazine with great photos. Of course, those would be copyrighted but for studies and sketchbooks...
Certain museum collections, not of art but of objects... Fun!

Thank you so much Paula, excellent suggestions! Magazines are such a great resource for a variety of subjects - I have to say cars are one topic I shy away from 🤣
