- Let's see how we can utilize the REFLECT blend mode in Black and White photos.
The Reflect blend mode is an uncommon blend mode, however it is a very interesting blend mode, especially for black and white images. With a simple fill layer in reflect blend mode, you can very easily add more drama to your images.
In this video, i will shortly explain the effect of the reflect blend mode and try the reflect blend mode on a couple of sample images. We will also have a look at a quick composition where I will use the reflect blend mode to create a high contrast image. To finish up, i will use the applied techniques in inverse to flatten an image to restore some detail.

Very good tutorial. Waiting for the next tutorial on this topic! Thx again!
Glad you liked it!
@@Graphicalfinity I have made a small macros taking into account your video and it works amazing! I played with blend modes and the results were ok for some of them. It depends by the type of picture.
Please do a video on the masking curves alpha...mine is growing / shrinking the perimeter of the mask along a gradient. Is this what you mean by ' intensity ' ?
On the way :) thank you for the suggestion.
One of the best tuts you made, very very good, and yes i would love to learn more about opacity tricks
Awesome, thank you!
Mega ..
👍
Black fill layer with REFLECT blend mode on a color image looks identical to duplicating the image with a MULTIPLY blend mode...one of my favorites now with more flexibility! :0
Excellent!
Nice! You answered one that had me stumped recently as ALPHA. Also, your use of links for the demo was a really helpful comparison of different blend mode effects. I can hardly believe that you didn't use blend ranges...hmmm...
Awesome, thank you! I cant believe myself, that i didn't mention blend ranges :) Probably i used it but forgot to mention :D
I understand that in Affinity you can’t directly change mask density as you can in Photoshop, but you can use a curves adjustment layer set to “Alpha” to do the same. I didn’t complete understand how you changed the mask from a clipped layer to a child layer in order to clip the mask to it. Perhaps you could prepare a tutorial going more in depth using curves to adjust mask density. Thank you for all of your Affinity Photo tutorials.
Thank you too! I am already in the progress of making a tutorial on this subject as more viewers asked the same question. Stay tuned.
It seems that I already did a video on this subject :) ua-cam.com/video/JXwpEzdUHTY/v-deo.html
Not sure what the math is here, but the Reflect blend mode seems to have some kind of negation function.
Note that when one wants to remove a color cast in an image, one can use a fill layer filled with the color one wants to remove set to Reflect blend mode.
In your gradient test image I notice that, as you move the grey value of the fill closer toward white, a narrow pure white band creeps to the left. But, to the right of that white band, you will also see that the values gently slope back downward from white to grey.
What is going on here?
And what is being reflected?
Thank you, i am planning to do a follow up video on the math of Reflect. This was the teaser I guess :)
