The Hamilton Airport weather station showed single digit (less than 10 degrees Celsius) minimum temperatures everyday between 8th October, 9.7C and 23rd October, 4.9C. (16 readings). Might be a factor in 'cooling' the cows off a bit.
I breed halve the heffers on day one of breeding and the other halve about a week later , that spreads out the repeats for the bulls to catch and hopefully get as many repeats as possable in calve quickly , I can run them in for to inject and cidr on my own and then it’s only two days work for the ab tech , works well 👌
Awesome, thanks for more info on the CIDRs, I wonder if there is any data or studies on their use in horses. It's been many years since I worked in a breeding shed, but I had a few problem mares in my day that I feel like this might have been useful for. Vise versa, has anyone in the dairy world tried Equilume? It's a stetchy mask with a blue light emitter that triggers at specific times to trick their body into coming into heat. Especially useful for thoroughbreds since you want them born as early in the year as possible and open or maiden mares tend not to cycle until spring.
Hey Andrew!!! I was wondering if you might be able to help us newer farm folk out; I was wondering if you ever had the time if you might be able to tell us a little bit about how/why and what you look for in bull selection? I know some people say it's a huge decision and some people don't seem to think much of it. I've really been looking for some improvements in the small Swiss/Friesian herd that I'm taking over for my uncle. I was wondering what are some really important points that a dairy farmer might want to look when selecting a bull and trying to match mating cows to a bull. No pressure if you can't but I would just love to see your take on it in maybe a short future video or something- you've made some great improvements with this herd in just a few short years it seems!
Hey! I did do a video not long ago about bull selection, depends how much people care about genetics I think around how much bull selection matters maybe. I can do a video around picking what cows go to what though that’s a good idea 👍
I'm interested to know if you can you trace any of your cows back to your Granddads original herd or if you've just had to buy in other cows at some point to keep production up?
Unfortunately it’s not the same herd, because pop retired while dad was starting high school he sold his cows and dad brought his own when he went sharemilking later on. Would be awesome if we could’ve
Well it’s been on the market for a while. There was I think 40ha of beautiful flat land on the other side of the road which made the farm but they sold that separately
Kia ora Andrew - I was interested too when ABstarted in NZ, so I looked it up on Uncle Google and LIC had the following sates: 1941 - NZ Dairy Board publishes its first list of proven sires. 1947 - The first production studies of stock are bred from artificial insemination. 1949 - Commercial artificial insemination service begins in Waikato and Taranaki. 1950 - The first artificial insemination bulls for proving are purchased.

What amazes me is how there is so many cidar programs
Great work as usual
Great video Andrew 👍

Do you have a "Clean-up" bull to use to catch those cows that the "AI" didn't take?
Yep, 4 of them turned up that afternoon to go out with them the next day 👍
What is the acreage and asking price for the farm you mentioned is for sale?
Excatly was I was goin to ask
It’s 145ha, not sure what they are asking for it sorry, just says sale by auction.

How much internet will there be in the property in the current farming ckimate.

Do you ai the holsten x cow
Yep 👍 straight to Jersey, I have 2 daughters from her, I’ll try point them out in a video
👀🙄🐾👍
Would it pay to cdr all of them to synchronize.
Did wonder but costs a bit extra so save a bit of money and do it like this, plus they don’t all calve together which is easier for us
Good luck with your strike rate. What happened to the concrete pad outside the milk room ?
Haven’t done one yet, it’s on the list though 😅
@@TheOnceADayFarmer I see timelines and regulations have bungee cords strapped to them in NZ 🤭
Hey, to ask - what is PG...?
Prostaglandin , natural hormone that can be yoused to help cattle’s menstrual cycle
The Irish sexed semen has improved dramatcially the last few years as regard conception rates.

Far out it must’ve been something out of this world back in the 40s aye! That’s cool to know thanks for chucking it up 👍
