    The review I've been waiting 3 years for you guy's to do. Probably my favorite scotch hands down! & it's not cheap... about $125-$150 depending where you go in the U.S.
    When I add water to it, everything opens up! Less spice for sure, more pear, apple, apricot, vanilla, & zero burn. Love it!

    It's surprising to hear the differences in prices for G18. I'm in California and G18 is $89/bottle which I consider to be a steal. It makes it an every day sipper and I often use it to warm up my palate for a tasting. An even better deal is the Tomatin 18, which we can get for $77 out here. With lighter scotches like G18, Old Pulteney 17, Longmorn 16, Arran 14, etc I find that giving them some air (15-20 minutes) really helps pull out the nuances in the palate. I'm also coming off of a big peat and sherry kick so I'm finding the lighter profile appealing at the moment. :)

    • @Scotch4Dummies
      @Scotch4Dummies  4 роки тому

      I think I'll be following suit as I went through the Peathead phase and am now on the downhill side of the Sherry Bombs....there is something to say about the lighter scotches....you have to really be paying attention to them to get the most out of them...or you can just not pay attention and enjoy them in a naïve kind of way.....Good points Matt. ~Mark

    This is an awesome whisky. Sure it's a bit soft and gentle but it's really well done. Full of flavour and no alcohol burn. I think you need to spend time with the bottle over a few weeks to truly appreciate it. It's definitely one of my favourites I'd give it 3.5 fingers.

    This is one of those bottles where pricing is very different from region to region. Where I live in California its $70 (Costco - don't need a membership to buy liquor btw) to $95 (Total Wine), KY it's close to $120. In Texas it's $130. This is my standard for 18 YR along with Tomatin 18. Almost nothing beats em' for quality vs price, at least where I live.

    Good review! I'm probably right there between Shawn and Mark/Drew. A solid 2 to 2.5 for me. Nothing mind blowing, but it really is a decent bottle. Still, in that kind of approachable/main stream big distiller 18 year old category, I'm going with Glenfiddich 18 all day over this. Also yes I have had Foie Gras. ;)

    I’ve had foie gras- once; brought over from France by a friend years ago.
    Agree that the GL 18 is quite pedestrian for its age and $120 is too expensive. Probably worth $75-85 for me. I’ve had some impressive IBs of Glenlivet though, it really benefits from a higher ABV and no filtering IMO. Cheers!

    Everyday low price of $99 here in Chicago. It's nice but I agree with Andrew, there are other Scotches I would buy before another bottle of this. I am glad I bought a bottle to experience. $29.99 for the 12 year. Now that is value.
    I have had foie gras, didn't really like it much. The Aldermen in Chicago tried to outlaw it a few years back. A local hot dog place would make fries on Saturday using duck fat and paid the fine each weekend and people lined up around the block to get them fries!

    It definitely is way better than the 12--for me, the fruit flavor does have some depth and it is really smooth. I'd give it a score of 3, but that is partly because I see it for $50-60 in Japan, where I guess they are discounting it to compete and get market share.

  • @jkvan368
    @jkvan368 4 роки тому

    No, I haven’t had Foie Gras and really not planning on having it lol. Great review though, I like the GL12 for a budget sipper, always worried the 18 wouldn’t be strong enough for the price tag. Maybe if I catch it on clearance one day. Keep up the good work!

    • @groberti
      @groberti 2 роки тому

      I don't think the GL12 is worth any price, you can buy much better whisky for the same price or even less. On the other hand the GL18 is a very good highland scotch imho

  • @jongeppert5510

    I feel like you guys dinged this one based on this being a $130 bottle, but this bottle is closer to the $100 price point ranging from $75 to $110. So this begs the question, if you rated it on this lower price, what would you have given it? Other than price, I agree with everything you guys said on this bottle to the T! It is not robust like Glendronach or Macallan 18s, but it’s half the price, at least in CT. If you compare it to Glenmorangie 18, which is on par for price, I would pick The Glenlevit 18 all day long. Thanks for reviewing this one, i have a feeling we’ll be hearing more about it!!!

    • @Scotch4Dummies
      @Scotch4Dummies  4 роки тому

      And we're learning that the price point we have here is inflated....you're right as that higher price did hurt it's score with each of us and for the lower prices it's definitely a value. It's solid, but not "wow" to me...now, if I can snatch it for $70, hell yes I'm on it! :-) ~Mark

    Had this one (even was at the distillery) and I can nameLOTS of 18 years old whiskies in the same price-range that are better…….for instance: Glendronach, Glen Scotia, Glenmorangie, Glengoyne, Arran and so on...…….and what to think about a 1 liter bottle of Glenfarclas 18 years old, which I can buy here in The Netherlands for 47,50 euro's?! I would agree with the 1.5 score, because when I drank it a few years back it was very disapointing to me...….but hey, if ALL whiskies were excellent we didn't need tastings and ratings anymore………..thumbs up from me again!

    18 years should give it depth and complexity which it seems to lack. Even leaving price out it needs to be dinged for that! I assume that the GD18 (Allardice) would blow this away (and a bit cheaper)? Or the Laga16 (almost a 18yo) which is even cheaper (of course peated and not the same).

    • @Scotch4Dummies
      @Scotch4Dummies  4 роки тому +1

      Not really fair... Allardice is much more expensive and matured exclusively in sherry casks for 18 years. The Glenlivit is a combination of 1st and 2nd fill ex bourbons as well as some ex-sherry.... Not disagreeing with your complexity comment at all, just saying the Dronach has much more because it came from much more.... ~Mark

    • @petercreemers4964
      @petercreemers4964 4 роки тому
