- Jutulhogget is one of the largest canyons in northern Europe. It is 2.4 kilometers long and located in Norway's Innlandet region.
In this video, we walk along the upper edge of the canyon's steep walls, which range in height from 100 to 240 meters. Here, you can occasionally hear the echo of falling stones resonating throughout the canyon-its acoustics are truly remarkable! And we will demonstrate this at the very end of the video. ;)
Usually, a river flows along the bottom of a canyon, gradually shaping it over time. But Jutulhogget is unusual-it’s a dry canyon. It was created by the catastrophic breakthrough of a glacial lake dam at the end of the last Ice Age, about 10,000 years ago.
The glacial lake Nedre Glomsjø was blocked by glacier ice, preventing the water from flowing south. But as the amount of meltwater increased, the lake eventually broke through its natural barriers, forming a new outflow to the east. In a dramatic event, the lake drained into the Rendalen Valley at an incredible rate of 180,000 cubic meters per second. The immense water pressure carved out Jutulhogget in a matter of days.
In 2022, Jutulhogget was included in the list of the 100 most significant geological formations in the world.
There are also many legends associated with this place. The most famous tells of a feud between two giants, Rendalsjutulen and Elvdalsjutulen, whose battle resulted in the creation of the canyon-cut by their mighty axes.
To us, this place also feels a bit mystical. During our walk, the weather changed multiple times-one moment the sun was shining, and the next a strong wind swept through, despite not being in the forecast. And sometimes we could hear the sounds of falling stones that wandered along the canyon.
Near the steep cliffs, thick moss in various colors and shapes clings to the rock. But be careful-stepping on it can cause it to break loose and slide toward the abyss, potentially taking an unwary traveler along with it.
On this adventure, it’s important to find a safe and cozy spot to take a break, enjoy some tea, and soak in the breathtaking views of Jutulhogget Canyon. And don’t forget to bring some treats! :) You can walk along the canyon’s rim for hours, with the landscape constantly changing and the views luring you to go just a little farther... and then a little more... and more...
