Dave, I wonder whether a better translation for "Not" in this specific sentence "Aus der Jugend wird schon Not" would be "hardship" or "distress"...

I'm within the age range of the Rammstein guys, to me I think and feel that as you (significantly) age (50+) you start thinking about this sort of reality more. Time seems to go so much faster.
When you were a kid a year seemed SO long. Now, seasons fly by so fast.
With the pandemic many of us may have lost a lot of people that we didn't intend/expect to lose under "normal" circumstance.
With such happenings being all too real it forces you to keep these thoughts in the foreground where we usually kept them in the background.

It could be longer, this title is so epic and layered... I watch Time Reactions and everyone talks about the black figure as death or an allegory of time. Of course, that's the first idea that comes up - but there are three such characters, not a single one.
I took the interpretation that these are the three Norns from Norse mythology - reading that explains some of the imagery in the video. The Norns stand (put simply) for past, present and future, they live with the tree of life Yggdrasil,
at the roots of which springs the fountain of life. They accompany people from birth to death, influence their destiny and finally cut the thread of life. We see it slide off Christoph's neck as he dies - life is leaving him. The unstoppable flow of time
represented in the sandblast and the hourglass (which incidentally looks similar to the ancient representations of the Yggdrasil tree of life), is that from which we emerge (the Norns emerge with the newborns) and into which we disappear again (the "daughter" of ollie). That hourglass that turns upside down
mmn stands for the futility with which women keep giving birth - and the children keep dying. That's why the women are angry (that's how I interpret their facial expressions and gestures. You don't just yell around during births, even if those who haven't given birth could assume that.
Birth is much more of a tremendous feat than pain.) The middle part with the Rammsteiners turning each other around shows mmn the eternal struggle that life can represent. The older, the more serious and implacable. The Norn also appears here (there is a main Norn, the other two are "only" her companions).
If she were death, the children would die. But they don't, they even refrain from shooting. At the end (ie at the beginning - you have to imagine the film the other way around) the band members meet the Norne on their journey on the sea (see sailor, the sea certainly stands for life here too). They are horrified, scream
they don't want the end of their life to be "there". But, like every fight against the sandblast before it, this is in vain. Interestingly enough, the band members deal with the sandblasting very differently, everyone was certainly allowed to do it as they wanted. Ollie just puts up with him, Till (the swimmer) fights in/with him.
Christoph "plays" with him, just as examples. The daughter doesn't fight, she calmly goes back in time. As someone wrote: Yes, we are all children of time and we do not escape it. Incidentally, neither did the gods, according to Nordic myths. :)
Great. Also the music. If this isn't such an epic classic,
I don't know either... The lyrics, oh my goodness, what can one say about Till's lyrics? You are awesome, that says it all.
*Possibly a reference to the end of her career*

I also love how the song ends with the same note repeating till the end of the song, slowly getting quieter while a choir sets in.
The played note for me is what happens and it wont stop happening while the choir is ressembling your own passing. While you pass the notes get quiter but they never stop. You just cant hear them as clear as you pass away.
Or it resembles your heartbeat but in a more fitting way to the music

Just a little supplement: As often in Till's lyrics, also in Zeit are allusions to classic German literature, namely to Faust by Goethe (and maybe others?).
Some see the ballad as a hidden message that Rammstein will finish its work as a band ("wenn es am schönsten / besten ist, soll man aufhören").

I have a basic understanding of the German language. One remarkable aspect of this song is that I could get its meaning without much translation especially when paired with the video. And after watching this video, it comes across a brilliant inspired writing that captures the Zeitgeist (pun intended) of the last 2 years when so many have been taken by the pandemic. Perhaps we have taken things too much for granted.

I've come back to this video about a year after first watching it. I realise how much of the philosophy of time I have taken on board into my own life, such as noticing and embracing "Ein jeder kennt den perfekten moment".
I recently met up with someone (for the second time who i found extremely attractive), who also loves Rammstein, I quoted that phrase to her. We spent 8 incredible hours together, during which there was a zeit where we were sat in a cove on some rocks overlooking the sea, with my arm around her and her leaning into me, definatly a sense of Unendlichkeit. I was lucky enough to be aware at the time, that this is one of those moments to embrace and enjoy.

Thank you for sharing your perspective and enabling us to learn German as well! I think this song is a masterpiece and Lindemann (and team) have outdone themselves and in my book this is Rammstein's best song since it deals with our existence as Time marches on indifferent to what we have to say or experience. All of us will have to cross that river one day. in the end and who knows we may be just crossing into another dimension of a multiverse universe ( so some of us may be hoping, visiting our loved ones again - but we will never know). As we cross into that other dimension, I hope there will great bands just like Rammstein and people like you that make our world a better and more meaningful existence..... Thank you.

My interpretation and thought was time goes on like a continuous cycle and those rare occasions when we are truly happy of course we want time to stop. The showing of the sand and hourglass ⌛ time keeps going and them showing the scenes reversing to me meant a desire to go back in time either to the moment of birth and start our lives over or to before we're even born saying no i don't even want to be born i want to go back before i was even conscious of my own existence and mortality. Them being blindfolded to me was no one knows whats going to happen in the future we don't know what kind of lives these babies are going to have..the babies themselves are completely helpless and must blindly rely on his mother or another person to take care of it and help it survive but then when we're old enough we sometimes think why? Why bring babies into this world knowing all the pain and suffering and why am i here? Just to go through suffering both of physical amd emotional pain..then end up dying which is scary enough but then not knowing what happens after you die..is that it? Is there going to be another life? Hell? Heaven? Ok damn!😮 the different messages in the lyrics and the images in the video are like a beautiful tragedy...joyful pain..tears of joy and sorrow...feelings of excitement and dread for the future all yin and yang ☯ rolled into this one powerful song and video 😭😍😥😅❤🖤

Nice video. Till reminds me of Nietzsche's Ewige Wiederkunft where his challenge (at least my interpretation of his writings) is to live your best life because you will live it again forever. This is the only video a non German speaker needs to see when listening to Zeit. Well done! The line "Augenblick, verweile doch" is a direct reference to Goethe's Faust.
    "Werd ich zum Augenblicke sagen:
Verweile doch! du bist so schön!
Dann magst du mich in Fesseln schlagen,
Dann will ich gern zugrunde gehn!"

      ist wert, das es zugrunde geht;
Drum besser wär's, daß nichts entstünde.
So ist denn alles, was ihr Sünde,
      Zerstörung, kurz, das Böse nennt,
      Mein eigentliches Element...😈

Time moves faster the older you get if you don't take specific actions to deliberately pay attention to everything. This is similar to the reason that a lot of drugs make time seem to move more slowly. Basically, the more information your brain has to process/ how closely you're paying attention to details/ how novel your environment and activities are, the more slowly things seem to move. So if you're a child experiencing everything for the first time, you pay attention to everything. If you're old, you just jumble most perceptions into per-constructed categories and tend to gloss over most environmental data. There is also some effect related specifically to experiencing time as a proportion of all time you've already experienced, but that's more nuanced, complicated, and as-yet not fully explained.

Many refer to the dark figures as the reaper(s). I don't find them scary and since there are three and not just one I connect them to the norse norns. The weavers, the measurers and the cutters of the threads of life. (Or simply past, present and future personified.)
Anyway, great breakdown of the lyrcs and not just the plain "wow - reaction" we get everywhere. :)

I wonder if fair use policy would allow for distorting the actual sound from the song being translated and critiqued enough to make it illegible but keeping the melody (perhaps a simple low pass filter) so that as the translation is being spoken over the top the listener/learner still has an easy recognizable reference to the original piece of the song? This would help a lot with recall when re-listening to the song in the future.

This new Rammstein song is such an incredible masterpiece, both musically and lyrically! (The visuals of the music video are also amazing.) The way Till uses his voice so expressively, and how the lyrics will definitely mean something to everyone! It made me think of how beautiful and expressive the German language is, and made me remember a quote from Hesse's Steppenwolf: "Im deutschen Geist herrscht das Mutterrecht, die Naturgebundenheit in Form einer Hegemonie der Musik, wie sie nie ein andres Volk gekannt hat." 😍🔥

Thanks for the video, Dave. I'd been looking forward to your interpretation. Even with my very limited knowledge of German, I could see it's a beautiful song, so straightforward but multi-layered at the same time, and watching your video filled in the gaps I was wondering about. Vielen, vielen, dank!
