  • In this review, I'm joined by a very good friend of mine, and sometimes viewer of channel, Sean (‪@seankane9351‬), to review a beer from Barncat Artisan Ales, and it's their Cat Deactivator, the 2023 release. This is an English Barleywine that is aged in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels for 15 months. Unfortunately, Barncat closed up shop late last Summer, which is a bummer, but Sean was able to grab one of their final barrel aged releases, and he was kind enough to give me a bottle. While Sean doesn't watch a ton of BeerTube, he's been a friend of mine for about 10 years, so we sat down to give this a proper review and pay our respect to Barncat. Thanks for the bottle, Sean!

      Yes, RIP Barncat.
Any time that I had a bottle share to go to, it would be a trip to Barncat that people would remember. Best brewery in Canada and I was lucky to be so close for quite a few years.
Cheers Joe and Sean. This review gave me the feels. Son

It's a damn shame, Jamie. So many people enjoyed the brewery. Wish they were still around. So many good beers. Thought it made sense to review this one with Sean. Good closure, IMO.
      Cheers, buddy!

I am not a fan of barleywine, generally. However, I reviewed Beware of the Moon from Xül. It was an amazing beer. So now I am torn on barleywines. I am sad to hear Barncat closed, even though I have never had anything from them, I love their name. Cat Deactivator is a great name as well and I would buy the beer for the name even though its a barleywine. Great Video!

Thanks, brother! Barleywine is definitely one of those styles that is an acquired taste more than most. If you enjoyed that Xül offering, then there's definitely some others out there that you'd get down with, IMO. Barncat was a great brewery, and I loved their name (along with the names of many of their beers). Just good stuff all-around. It's a shame they're gone, but at least they're not forgotten.
      Cheers, dude!

Thanks, Fraser! Sean is a great dude, and it was so cool that he shared a bottle of this with me. It's a shame Barncat isn't around anymore, but at least there's still a ton of great Ontario-based breweries that are pumping out fantastic beer.
      Cheers, buddy!
