I watched this video mostly because I’m new to watches and know nothing about Breitling. First off, the way you broke down the history, your personal tastes, along with the video editing and references/pics-fantastic. Most people put me to sleep but not you. Great review!. I too was looking at buying a Speedmaster when I came across the 765 AVI. I'm a fan of the Speedmaster but can never seem to make the jump to purchasing. The 765 has such an authentic vintage pilots chronograph look and the history of the original version made it a complete package. I guess at the end of the day, I need those Arabic numerals on the dial!

@ID-Guy I was thinking about your FXD when I bought the Sinn . It's a similar watch in many ways. The count down bezel, the similar size, the tooly legible look... just great
This really is a beautiful Breitling chronograph that I didn't know. I think the beloved Speedy has an often overlooked design flaw. It is often difficult to judge the hour display of the stopwatch. While we're on the subject of chronographs: Take a look at the IWC 3706 when you get the chance, a real design masterpiece. I have a well-preserved one on my wrist for a few months now and love it more and more every day.
I have been with this channel since the early days, even in the 3 hour viewer wristshot streams (RIP) you brought up these watches all the time. Glad you get to experience the Breitling as well.

I have enjoyed this great piece since I picked one up shortly after seeing your comparison with the Bigeye. It is an outstanding 1:1 re-edition and a strap monster. Love your content!
I really enjoyed the video and especially this topic. I’ve yet to settle on a particular chronograph to go after. There are just so many wonderful pieces to consider. I love the hands on format too! Well done 🥃
I enjoy this video, I have 1.5 years with mine purchased the last piece my dealer had in a safe as he made room for other Breitling. It's a strap monster imo. I got a great price for mine full set new and it stays in my collection.
Congrats! That's a beautiful watch, that I didn't even know existed. I personally love acrylic crystals. Scratched up they look amazing....and so easy to polish up again. Thanks as always for providing great reviews with appreciation of the intangible details.
Fantastic pickup! I remember you talking about this back in 2020 or 21 and i've had quite a few peeps at it online etc. Really great in hand review. It really fits right in your collection.
In truth, I'd been eyeing the 765 since last years SOTC. Didn't mention that I really wanted to re-add a pilot chronograph / field watch at the time (until I'd secured it) but man... I'd trim the collection down to four pieces and be happy. Thank you as always Michael! Have a superb weekend brother! 🥃
"Avigation" pieces in general just nail it, right? Couldn't be more impressed with either of them (in fact I'd probably own them both together) And the 765, such a great background. Check out all the different variations through the 60's 🔥
It almost teeters on that "doesn't look like a Breitling" edge, right? I sometimes forget (until seeing that beaded bezel) that I'm dealing with a Breilting chrono. Man, the DNA is all there... I so wish these makers would dig deeper into ther 40's & 50's catalogues and bring out some gems! Thank you for this Joe 🥃
First of all, I really love your work thank you for your wonderful channel and all of your hard work. I really enjoy your content. I have a Bray type 20. You discussing the different handset in your new watch, maybe think about mine. Just enjoying the dial and taking it all the complexity. I’ll wear my watch tomorrow and think about you as I appreciate all the little details.all the best!
I love that more and more “Type 20” watches are coming back. You have the iconic Hanhart 417 for a pretty affordable price. If you have a slightly bigger wrist and buget, the Longines Big Eye. This beautiful Breitling.
Brilliant video. I really enjoyed it. I remember when this exact re-release hit the market and being intrigued by it. I am a fan of Sinn watches and the syringe hands caught my attention right away. I never had any idea there was so much history behind this one. Breitling does have a catalogue like that, I suppose it makes sense.
This is fantastic watch enthusiast content, youve shown something made by Breitling that cuts through all the surf squad nonsense, that’s a beautiful grail watch, a proper watching enthusiast would take that over the Daytona all day long. The first thing I did was went and looked at the price and you’re not wrong. The big eye offers a tremendous amount for the money but you’re right, the Breitling is absolutely beautiful.
Ah, thank you Rob. It's really a cool add that it's so under the radar and most wouldn't even look at it twice (my kind of piece) Gotta re-emphasise, you can find BigEye's for insanely good discounts too... and man, it really kicked my arse into gear to start chasing Chrono's. This hobby, always something new to discover 😉🥃
Fantastic piece! I own a Navitimer and while I also own a couple of “high status” Rolexes, the Navi is the one that makes me smile the most. Been contemplating a Premier but then you came along and… well, maybe I just have to try this one out. Would be epic to add this next to the Navi. Cheers!
I must admit that I don't know much about Breitling watches, but after this seductive video I can tell you for sure that I will check them out, following your advice 👍
I was able to get the same watch back in January of this year after looking around. I love it, acrylic crystal, manual winding, I think its great, like living in the 1950s. I also have the Speedy, but I think the Breitling is a little more classic. Good luck with your watch.
It’s an interesting twist on things, right? A blend of pilot and field instead of a more all-out sports watch. And man, that GMT bezel… why don’t more chrono’s have them? Thank you Edward! The same to you sir! 🥃
Beautiful timepiece. I held the Breitling Avi 765 Avi at a local AD and was impressed with it. I am always impressed with the straps you pair with your watches. Consider doing a vid on watch strap design and who and what in your opinion makes a good watch strap. Also interested in your choices of deployment claps. Thanks for the channel and your professional content.
Congrats. That’s very impressive. Looks even more handsome on the Breitling site. The brands (except Omega because they already have 42000 models available) really need to to look at re-releasing some of the classics.
All of these big names could be doing such damage by digging back to the 40's and 50's when their Chrono's were on another level. Absolutely brilliant! And thank you m'boy! 🥃
I have to agree with your thought on this watch. It's a cracking piece. As for the aesthetic I also have to agree with the function and character of the "Big Eye" a watch that for me is easily the most at a glance readable chronograph that I've seen to the point that I bought the steel version years ago. If I recall correctly there is quite a back story to the current "Big Eye" introduction as well that you covered on a much earlier video. Maybe at some point paths may cross with the 'Lucy' and if that time comes and I can justify one I might just have a second look but even then I doubt that I would want to pass on my Longines "Big Eye", we have memories. Many thanks for sharing.
There’s such an interesting (and sorta unknown) background to the BigEye too, spot on. A prototype that was made in the 70’s but has a design and details that could date as far back as the 30’s. Ah, it’s a gem. Truly wish that I’d connected with it better. I was 85% there, but they final 15 was the rotor and thickness… still bugs me to this day 😆🥃
Awesome video! The AVI suits you well. Great choice wrt your continued interest in military style watches. I imagine the AVI flies under the radar screen compared to the usual chronograph characters.
Lovely watch, suits you. I went, long time ago, with the Speedy. That one works for me. I do still sometimes look at a Breguet Type 20 at 39mm, hoping every year for a re-release. Enjoy the weekend.
Thank you Theo. It's one of those things we all wish for, seeing a Type XX that actually looks suitable. Those new models with that date window comp, thick case and hefty pricetag... will they ever get the formula right? Have a great weekend yourself sir and thanks again! 🥃
The golden age of flying and vintage watches. A tough combination to beat. Your thoughts and perspectives on watches are how us men should all think. 🥃
I think this is one of the most handsome watches breitling has ever made. While I really like the Breguet type xx, I always dislike the subdials cutting out the numerals. Lovely piece, congrats
The cut-out numerals is definitely a feature that we either love or hate (must admit I really like seeing the full numerals in the dark especially) And thank you m'boy. It's really a special machine that most wouldn't even look at twice 🥃
Great video. I'm a huge B fan and in my opinion, what Breitling offers its customers more than say, Rolex and Omega, can be summed up like this: Rolex is the Ferrari brand, Omega clinical in execution and aligns to Porsche, but when you are the guy turning up with the Lamborghini, the others feel a little inadequate..... ! For those in the know, it has been that way for a very, very long time....
Wonderful video as always! I love the 765, and came very close to buying the re-edition when it was first launched. For whatever reason, I more recently chose the Classic AVI P51 Mustang which is a slightly modernised version of the same watch. The hands are more similar to those of the Big Eye, and I like the applied B logo. The numerals on the bezel are a little larger, and it is an automatic. Sadly it has a 30 minute totaliser to keep the cost down. I love the new details such as the coordinates of the factory debossed in tiny numerals at the bottom of the dial, and the red tip on the second hand. I’d love to get your thoughts on how these compare!
Just saw your email! Here I’m supposed to be on holiday but I’m still working 😆 Well done for landing that EZM m’boy! It’s still a dream of mine to one day own a 1.1. Freaking love them! 🔥
Great video! I think the listed dimensions of this watch is quite deceiving, especially the thickness. I believe the hesalite alone adds 2mm, thus it feels alot thinner on wrist than the listed 14mm. Add to the fact that it is manually wound, closed caseback and again, the acrylic glass makes it incredibly light and comfortable to wear.
I’m not a chronograph guy either but I’ve fallen in love with my Sinn 356. I’ve been on the verge of selling it a couple times but always gravitate towards wearing it. If it wasn’t automatic I wouldn’t wear it as much but man everything about it is so tactile and solid feeling.
I love Breitling their finishing is stunning. I have a Breitling Super ocean A17367 and it's a beaut that's given me zero issues and everything operates soo smooth. I still want to add a Breitling Chronomat panda 🐼 dial 39mm from the 90s
I'm not a chronograph Guy, too. But I got the little Hanhart 417es in the reverse panda version. It has fully lumed subdials, so the chronograph is functional at night (Just in case you ever need it)! 😂 Your Breitling is an awesome watch 👍
Great video. I prefer arabic numerals as well. The Speedmaster is over rated, I have had a few. Great insight on Breightling. I will check out the Big Eye as well. You do a great job on these videos. The fact that you are so opionated makes it so much better. Too many channels just talk about the watch. You actually delineate what you like and don't like. Nice work on this video.
Nice essay as always. Having watched, listened to your reasoning, I think you'll pick up the Speedmaster at some point. As for me, if there's such a thing as "one and done" watch, it would be the Speedy for sure.
A manual wind chronograph as a one and done lol. Do you even have one? Glad you like it so much though. Live long and prosper 🖖🏻 Omega fanboys getting butt hurt because someone prefers something else never gets boring. You guys are the Borg of Watch collecting.
Oh JT, that "date" isn't even a date! It's called the "Lucy Digital"... freaking outstanding bit of kit. 15 Minute totaliser that resets as the minutes go by. So in theory, far easier to tell the exact minute at a glance. It's so dope man 🔥
Stopped in at the Breitling Boutique near me this afternoon. Asked if they had the 765 AVI 1953 re-edition. Representative did a search and noted that there were only two left in the entire company globally. Of course, my boutique did not have either of the two. Happy hunting if this one sparks your interest.
I had a Big Eye and let it go, only to regret doing so. Your criticisms of the Big Eye are spot on, but somehow it just works like no other watch I’ve encountered. I bought a 2023 Speedmaster Moon Watch and it’s fantastic in every way, but that Big Eye …
Interesting where this hobby takes us, right? Same feeling about the BigEye this side... AND I bet I'll be falling down the speedy rabbit hole soon enough 😆🥃
Congratulations and good luck with it! If anyone is looking for an alternative, Hamilton makes a line of automatic Intra-Matic chronograph watches that are a little less than half the price of the Speedmaster and this Breitling. The Seiko Speedtimer and Casio Edifice line are some others too. All three aforementioned brands come with great specs too. You tend to focus a lot on luxury brands. At some point I suggest you go over more affordable watches like, maybe, an "affordable alternatives" to some of the time pieces you have covered.
beautiful watch reminds me of the Breguet type 21/22 but at a more affordable price point , as i like larger watches i would opt for the Super AVI B04 Chronograph GMT 46 P-51 Mustang on a bracelet
👏🏾👏🏾 great clip. Something cool for this watch will be in the mail in a week or so, hopefully I time it for your return 🥃 and funnily enough I’ll be picking up a sapphire speedy in the not too distant future 😂 love that thing
Very much enjoyed this video. I have this watch and could not agree more with what you stated. Awesome watch! Can you tell me where you purchased or the manufacturer of the butterfly buckle?
Well we have very similar taste I have the same zenith but the brownish colored dial and I have the exact same Breitling . My question is what buckle do you have on it ? Mine came with a classic tang buckle but yours isn’t ? Great video btw and I hesitated between the longines and the B and I selected the B. Very pleased
I personally don’t have a chronograph shaped hole because I instead have a God shaped hole that I vainly try to fill with luxury watches and cars. However despite how hard I try, I can never fill that hole. God bless and Thanks for sharing your 1st hand knowledge.
A fantastic chronograph indeed but totally impractical like the Big Eye. Why did they choose that minute counter with those three minute intervals as specified by the French air force contracts?
This is very intriguing , yet very I’m having a hard time to decide. I got plan to decide for a pilot/ chronograph watch for Jan 2025 and yet nothing has been finalised . My list IWC Mark xx ( feels plain) IWC pilot chronograph (thickness case issue ) Longinus Spirit Green Edition (thickness case issues) Tudor Chronograph (still not so sure) Breitling Navitimer chronograph 41 (after watch your, it more confusing) All great timepieces, but I can only get one . Got seiko flight master chronograph (great day to day watch) Fortis Marinemaster (to thick we are talking about 15.5 mm) Bomberg 68 ( made a crazy decision , had my mind far away)
Got the BigEye in 2019. The AVI 765 1953 re-edition in rose-gold a year ago. Sapphire Crystal and more legible dial on the Longines makes it more practical for day to day use in the cockpit. The Breitling is more of a show piece in rosegold and its hesalite crystal. Don’t think they compete with the speed master with it’s tachymeter scale on the bezel. The BigEye has no bezel at all. For the money, I paid $1700 new, you can’t go wrong with the BigEye. If you’re going to have only one aviator style chronograph in your collection the Longines is a good candidate. The only funny thing about the BigEye was the box it came in. Huge wooden thing that fits my 12 watch collection.🙂
Been waiting for this vid! What a charming watch you got there! Very classy! Love it! but 22mm lug width on a 41mm watch? That feels... slightly too big?
The dimensions do make it sound off, right? No idea how the 22mm seems to work on this size case BUT if modern Rolex is going down that road with their Submariner (pretty unreal) there must be something to it. Slightly more strap presence that also seems to bring down the size of the watch head. And thank you Doc! 🥃
@@ID-Guy Hey at least they didn't go with those wonky odd number sizes! Imagine... 21! XDDD That would be a nightmare! Anyway, it has the perfect military look and aviation mixed in. Really digging it. You still should get a Speedy in future tho, it's just... timeless. And STOP TALKING ABOUT PHALLIC 12 MARKER! XDDDDD
This is very ‘on brand’ for you mate! Did you know about the history before getting interested in the watch or vice versa? I wonder what colour the lume was when the watch was brand new originally. The tan lume does put me off a bit.
It was vice versa for me about the history (I think that’s why I enjoyed the experience all the more) AND as far as I know, T lume did tend to have a soft beige when they were new. But if different from company to company (and who they outsourced it from) but thank you Prof! Really had a great time putting this together! 🥃
I picked them all up from WatchGecko earlier in the year (when they had a sale) I think they have the name "Radstock" if I remember right? Spanish leather, stiff n sturdy. And all the combo's work! 🥃
So I fell down the Breitling rabbit hole…

I love the Big Eye that you've influenced me on getting because of your videos! :)
Still a piece I regret that I didn’t get along with 100%, it’s so brilliant man. So, so brilliant! 🥃
Great video and so glad you mentioned the Hanhart as the blueprint for the type XX. This looks a special piece and so much better knowing its history.
I have enjoyed this great piece since I picked one up shortly after seeing your comparison with the Bigeye. It is an outstanding 1:1 re-edition and a strap monster. Love your content!
Great choice. Always nice to see something less common
Had me from the jump…..until “acrylic”. Just can’t do it, especially at that price range. Oh well. Onward. - great review as usual 😎👍🏼
Acrylic, man... acrylic always lets us down 😆 Classic! 🥃
Beautiful piece, and I’m always amazed at how much value the Avigation provides to its wearer.
I’m going to look up the 765 right now!
"Avigation" pieces in general just nail it, right? Couldn't be more impressed with either of them (in fact I'd probably own them both together) And the 765, such a great background. Check out all the different variations through the 60's 🔥
Best looking Breitling I’ve seen. Excellent video giving us a deep dive into it
It almost teeters on that "doesn't look like a Breitling" edge, right?
Very good video, love the story and your design details! Thank you.
That’s choice is a Rock and a Hard Place for me, but glad you like it 😉
Hope you got a big discount!
I did! It was too good of an offer to refuse sadly. Either the 765 or an FOIS (and the B09 Caliber won me over 😉)
Fits in well , very well with your collection. A true Connoisseur
Appreciate it Ian (as always sir) Thank you 😉🥃
I love that more and more “Type 20” watches are coming back.
You have the iconic Hanhart 417 for a pretty affordable price.
If you have a slightly bigger wrist and buget, the Longines Big Eye.
This beautiful Breitling.
For the Breitling love
Excellent deep dive into an underrated classic from Breitling! Worth the wait 🥃
Love the story telling!
Congratulations on another tasteful pick. Thank you for the great videos.
When it comes to chronographs I love my Speedmaster MkII. But your Breitling is a fine looking piece.
Mk2 with a Racing dial, count me in. Such a cracker of a piece AND that they're still under the radar. Love it man! 🥃
I love Breitling and you’ve definitely chosen a beauty!
Excellent video. A beautiful watch, a lot of function, and i love the acrylic.
I'm a huge B fan and in my opinion, what Breitling offers its customers more than say, Rolex and Omega, can be summed up like this:
Rolex is the Ferrari brand, Omega clinical in execution and aligns to Porsche, but when you are the guy turning up with the Lamborghini, the others feel a little inadequate.....
Man!! Nice!! So we both handling hardcore watches! Me with my Sinn EZM 3F and you with your beauty!!!
It has that Type 20 look and feel. Great one brother.
Live long and prosper 🖖🏻
Omega fanboys getting butt hurt because someone prefers
something else never gets boring.
You guys are the Borg of Watch collecting.
@@alfieakaronaldog You do realize Speedmasters are automatic these days.
@@airtiger360 No I didn’t!!
@@airtiger360 No longer a MoonWatch then 😂
It is a beautiful watch as a lot of Breitling's are. I really liked the picture of the Chrono with a date
AND I bet I'll be falling down the speedy rabbit hole soon enough 😆🥃
nice zenith! CLASSY AF
Thanks for your video. Enjoy your new time piece. It looks better than the Breguet these days.
beautiful watch reminds me of the Breguet type 21/22 but at a more affordable price point , as i like larger watches i would opt for the Super AVI B04 Chronograph GMT 46 P-51 Mustang on a bracelet
👏🏾👏🏾 great clip. Something cool for this watch will be in the mail in a week or so, hopefully I time it for your return 🥃 and funnily enough I’ll be picking up a sapphire speedy in the not too distant future 😂 love that thing
This watch is fantastic!
I would already own one if it was more water resistant (just like the AVIGATION BIGEYE and had no fauxtina.
I love the hands on video😊
Nothing like a good hands-on video from time to time, right? Gotta get more pieces in for these sorts of reviews 🥃
Very nice choice and not a common watch, which i always prefer
Very much enjoyed this video. I have this watch and could not agree more with what you stated. Awesome watch! Can you tell me where you purchased or the manufacturer of the butterfly buckle?
I am so glad Breitling is still independent, I'm currently saving up for a Navitimer
I totally thought Ken miles wore a tag heuer, thank you for this video!
A great choice. This watch looks even better than Breguet Type XX with a date at 4:30. Wear it in good health!
Man I wish they never did that to the new Type XX’s… heartbreaking 🥃
@@ID-Guy Amen to that!
My list
IWC Mark xx ( feels plain)
IWC pilot chronograph (thickness case issue )
Longinus Spirit Green Edition (thickness case issues)
Tudor Chronograph (still not so sure)
Breitling Navitimer chronograph 41 (after watch your, it more confusing)
All great timepieces, but I can only get one .
Got seiko flight master chronograph (great day to day watch)
Fortis Marinemaster (to thick we are talking about 15.5 mm)
Bomberg 68 ( made a crazy decision , had my mind far away)
What made you choose the 1953 Avi vs the 1964 re-edition with white sub dials?
I have the b70 orbiter it’s such a cool watch
Tactile feedback is definitely very important. Hence why i tend to prefer manualwind over autimatic.
It’s great, right? Only once have I forgot to wind it… BUT I’m learning 🤣 Had a far easier time remembering with my vintage field watches 🥃
XDDDDD
One of the best Breitling ever made
They’ve made some real bangers over the years… man, I’ve enjoyed studying up the history. There’s always something new to discover 🔥
Damnnn now i want a Big Eye
I'd highly recommend it brother... got me down the road to chase Chrono's and to this day, such amazing value for money! 🥃
The nicest breitling I’ve seen. Most of them, ugh But they’ve had a few hits in the last 2-3 years. This clearly is one of them
Great video as always. I personally think the Breguet Type 20 is awful and so do most people I know.
Interesting, but as I have a Speedy, Navitimer and Breguet Type XX the chrono collection isn't needing expanding.
Great looking watch straps, what were they?
I picked them all up from WatchGecko earlier in the year (when they had a sale) I think they have the name "Radstock" if I remember right? Spanish leather, stiff n sturdy. And all the combo's work! 🥃
Congratulations on acquiring Lucy, treat her with respect. Don't beat her, don't cheat her.
