I am more of a 1e player then 2e but I always liked the vast amount of options when building a Fighter, despite how simple actually playing one is. As building characters is a lot of fun in itself for me.
Why...?! Why did I read "bonk" as "boink"?! Now I can't stop thinking about the fighter class and its 10 pages of feats that allows you to creatively boink things...
One pro you kind of forgot to list is that for several of those builds, you don't need a lot of feats (plus the 2 flexible feats per day of the fighter help even more) so it makes them prime for archetype
Ok, now that the *easy* class to build is out of the way, i have a challenge for you, Nonat: make a cleric build video, specially warpriest... or maybe a bard video. XD
The only thing I don't like about the video is that it took you almost 4 minutes to get into the actual topic of the video. Keep going, love your content and dedication to the system. Don't let any furniture stop you in your way.
I feel like many of the Bully feats you covered are in fact tied to either the Fencer or the Big Weapon builds with their requirements, since many require having a hand free or wielding a two handed weapon. The fun thing with PF2 is that even these general builds you described aren't even that rigid, and you can very easily combine stuff to have some kind of Archer / Fencer, a Two-Hander/ Bully, or a Two-weapon/Sword and Board (using a shield boss and a short sword for instance).
Another con for sword and board is your shield's durability. I don't think it's as bad as people make it out to be, but it does feel like having trained crafting and the quick repair feat is almost required if you wanna make use of shield block!
Thrown Weapons Fighter is my favorite. It's great that they throroughly thought of that niche. It's very hard to decide which class to play, since rogues, swashbucklers, barbarians and fighters have great thrown weapons feats! LOVE IT!
Shields without bosses or spikes are already weapons, you can still attack without them. They just increase the damage. So yeah, I totally agree that dual weapon fighter archetype is useful and all dual weapon feats should be usable. I wish it was possible to throw a shield.
@@ChivalrousyWalrusy For sure, though I think it's strange that in Pathfinder bosses are just attachments for more damage and a part of the round shields.
@@JackdawLT just a way to make things work mechanically. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a razor attachment for slashing at some point. A blade along the rim or something.

I have a 7th level well-spring gnome with the glass shield Cantrip and duelist dedication….he attacks at reach with a gnome Flickmace and uses the knockdown feat to trip opponents….defensively he uses glass shield until it’s broken, then switches to dueling parry. This is in addition to his “unexpected shift” gnome ancestry feat, which grants a 25% chance to enjoy DR 7, which will go up to a 50% chance for DR 9 at 9th level. He’s also specialized in mobility with quick jump and wall jump and Rapid Mantel. Hard to catch, hard to hit, and does nice damage from reach with a penchant for tripping. Baddies often have to use an action to get up (Attack of Opportunity), move to attack and then hope the one attack hits. Even if it does it’s likely to be at least partially resisted, especially early in fights. Love the PF2 fighters!
I would not allow it, because, like the rest of shields with a boss, they are gripped in the fist with a central handle. However, I think it should be totally usable with dual weapon fighting feats in my opinion.
@@JackdawLT Bucklers are strapped and not held so they allow for a free hand to use healing potions. The actual downside is they are very flimsy for blocking. 2e.aonprd.com/Shields.aspx?ID=1

Thanks for your video series on pathfinder! Some friends and I are finally taking the plunge after getting fed up with d&d. Though we haven’t started yet officially, in finalizing a cavern elf fighter at level 3, picking up the wizard archetype at level 2 to blend together with a fencer-style fighter for added defense while keeping a hand free for casting opportunities. A bit late to the party, but wanted to show my appreciation beyond the like and subscribe.
I run a warhammer and shield warden. She's essentially a bully as she crits, she knocks prone, they stand? She AoOs Crits again, and keeps them on thier butt. She has 2 AoOs a turn so she can end up wasting a creatures whole turn, or forcing them to fight on the ground.
Will be making my first fighter, A dual weilder automaton when guns & gears comes out, Your feat recommendations are very useful so cheers man & wish me luck!
One thing you forgot unless it was not out at the time was that power attack is needed for a later feat at level 6 that makes it only take one attack instead of two
I'll admit it: it's hard to not make a great weapon fighter. But oh well, I also like Giant Instinct Barbarians so maybe there's a bias somewhere. Do Alchemists next Nonat, I dare you!
One problem with Fighter/Monk combos is that many of the Fighter feats require the character to be wielding a weapon and unarmed strikes do not count as a weapon. This means that many of the Fighter feats don't combo with most of the Monk stances, which are one of the best part of Monks.
Grabbing a "Bully" feat or two sounds like fun on a polearm based fighter. Knockdown/Trip into brutish shove means that anyone who doesn't have reach is going to eat an Attack of Opportunity from you pretty much no matter what. AND you still have a respectable d10 damage die if you just want to kill something and make it dead.
Missed the single most coolest fighter build! The two-hand free-hand fighter. It is honestly just a high ceiling blend of your categorized fencer, bully, dual weapon, great weapon categories that can do all of them at once or switch between them with a single interact action. Typically the build involves a two-hand trait weapon (generally a bastard sword or Hooked hammer if you wanna be super optimal hahaha) and a gauntlet/free-hand weapon. This build allows you to play around with some incredible versatility enjoying the benefits from dual handed assault's massive damage bonus (attacking with the die of a two handed weapon while keeping a free hand plus bonus damage) using dual slice with a gauntlet for high consistent damage and potential crippling crit fishing effects (hooked hammer and gauntlet assailing you at the same time with full fighter accuracy is bound to score nasty crit specialization effects), last but not least, doing all of this while keeping a free hand to grapple, trip and shove to your hearts content with the athletic's skill and assist with any potions or doors that need opening/closing! All in all, a very advanced build for players who have mastered every aspect of the fighter and simply want to adapt on the fly to any situation the battlefield demands.
I'm currently playing around with the idea for two characters. One is a goblin fighter/ranger with a longspear and heavy armor, going heavily into power attack, that wants to becoma a hellknight... don't ask me why or how, I just find the idea amusing. The other is a two-weapon fighter with the dual weapon warrior archetype that goes heavily into a hand-crossbow (later maybe firearm) and a one handed agile weapon.
Objection! The Thrown Weapon Fighter has a pro you didn't mention - thrown weapons add the Str bonus just like close combat attacks, meaning that a Thrown Weapon Fighter with a decent strength gets to be dangerous at all ranges; plus, it combines real good with two weapon styles - basically, anyone who thinks closing in to the weirdo tossing hatchets will cripple his combat ability is in for a VERY rude surprise.
One of my current characters is a Hobgoblin Fighter, and I'm planning to go with a combination of Sword & Board and Bully, focusing mostly on tripping with my flail and demoralizing things. I'll also be going into the Marshal archetype for some of those Intimidate-related feats. Overall I'm aiming for a front line battlefield controller, with a mix of feats to give me options for mitigating damage/enemy opportunity in different situations. Also, I thought Fighters were OP, but that Algorithm is SUPER OP.
I think you misread Guardian's Deflection @ minute 5:20. It is NOT a sword & shield feat, but rather a fencer feat. *Requirements:* You are wielding a single one-handed melee *weapon* and have your *other hand or hands free.* *Description:* You use your *weapon* to deflect the attack against your ally [...] Other than that, good video!
I started building a fighter recently (group playing Ages of Ashes, originally playing a dragon instinct Barbarian but she killed the dragon she hated so she “lost” her rage/rage powers) at level 15. I was the main damage dealer, but now I’m kinda trading elemental fixed damage for more dice (which is kinda nice cause everything was resistant/immune to fire). The build I am going for is bully/Great Weapon fighter hybrid. Intimidation class and skill feats, furious focus (which gives flat footed on AoO which is helpful for my ranger), knock down, power attack and the like. What I feel like you should have mentioned is that Combat Flexibility and Improved Flexibility Class Features are a thing. That at level 9, you can take a level 8 or lower fighter feat, and at 15 you can take a 14 or lower fighter feat (including ones with a prerequisite feat that combat flexibility filled). With these, you can take the class feats integral to your build identity and then take an extra two to diversify your options. (If you said this and I missed it tho, I’m sorry. Love your content as always and thanks for introducing Deadly D8! The channel seems fun and I expect a ton outta of them!)
So, something I’m toying with making is a spiked gauntlet and shield bash character. I’m thinking champion, with a fighter dedication to get access to some of the feats for bully builds.
Since my bard died, i rolled a Half-Orc Fighter! She uses the straight forward Power Attack with two handed weapon! Took the barbarian dedication feat so she has access to Rage, so she Hits So Hard in fights, and when she crits with that weapon... HOO BOY!! Its So satisfying to hit the Big Bad for 90+ damage in one hit!
Nope! it works for any ranged weapon! "When using a ranged weapon that doesn’t have the volley trait, you gain a +2 circumstance bonus to damage rolls on attacks against targets within the weapon’s first range increment."
@@Nonat1s It also has a requirement for you to be wielding a ranged weapon. Thrown weapons while wielded are not ranged weapons, only after they are thrown they are. Or am misunderstanding?
With a Bully Fighter you really want something like Meteor Hammer. Reach Trip is a great way to screw up an enemy's action economy. Trip 'em from 10' then safely swing at them while they're flat footed. Then on their turn they have to stand up triggering AoO (which might put them back on the ground if you crit), move to you if they don't have reach, and then with their third action they can attack if you didn't crit them with the AoO.
You're a bit wrong on the great weapon build, you can remove a hand for free thus you can drink your potion for example with no additional actions, but you need to spend an action to put your hand back on the weapon
Wait..... Seriously the game demand from you to use action to just PUT THE FU..ING HAND ON THE WEAPON ????? Especially on the guy like fighter ? The only guy who can be called the master of weapons. Well what can I say " Homebrewing is coming ".
@@Jacob-dl7bw It is on page 272 in the core rulebook table 6-2: changing equipment. Changing your grip by adding a hand to an item is an interact action, so costs an action, while removing doesn't since it is a release. Both require two hands. I could be misunderstanding it though.
In the Extinction Curse campaign my brother is playing a staff acrobat fighter (no free archetype though) and hes loving tripping everything with his scythe and getting free AoO against them when they stand.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't taking your second hand off and putting your second hand on a weapon your main hand is holding a free action/not an action? GWF can't use feats that require attacking with a hand free, but they can still retrieve and drink potions and such, right?
This gave me the idea of a throwing weapon fighter, with the acient elf ancestry to get the rogue or washbuckler dedication to be able to take the furberrie? Feat...the one where u can take a deck of cards ss ur weapon
probably playing 2e for the first time soon. I like the idea of taking a bastard sword to swap between 1h and 2h grips depending on how the fight is going. Is that a solid way to play?
You can't carry a great weapon in one hand? Is that in the rules? I have always allowed a character to hold it in a single hand but not attack with a single hand.
I personally agree with your ruling, obviously you couldn’t attack one handed with a maul, but I would definitely allow someone to carry one over their shoulder when not in combat.
I have to beg to differ with you when it comes to drinking potions with the two-handed sword or ox…Haven’t you ever heard of the idea of letting go of the handle with one hand grabbing your potion off of a potion belt holding the cork with your teeth and drinking the potion? It’s easily done
Duelist works very well with Kinetecist free dedication. The scaling of Kinetecist moves based on level is supernice. And as you have a free hand already most of the time anyways.. very little downside
The great weapon fighter does great offensively but I'd like something that helps mix it up with some cool defensive stuff I was trying to make a bastard sword duelist until I figured out letting go of your weapon takes the interact action.
In p2e if you are wielding a 2h weapon, say a greatsword, can't you hold it in one hand to access items with you're now free hand? Similar to holding a bow?
@@laki7480 that seems like an odd rule. I get that you would need to declare how many hands are on a weapon, say for a bastard sword, but why make it one of your 3 actions? It seems like an unnecessary extra penalty.
@@merlannin2108 You can still draw it and have it as 2h in a single action. My greatest assumption is balance and an incentive to use weapon traits such as meteor hammer instead of a bastard sword and cheese it. With an action economy system you can add such detailed rules to bring balance and bring "fun" to those who wants to use meteor hammer, buckler or fencer build etc.
Hey idk if its already been done or suggested, but have you thought about a video that rates or goes over pros and cons for different weapons? Idk about anybody else, but I find myself falling back on the same weapon (bastard sword, because that versatility is too good) with way too many of my characters and would love to hear somebody talk about the pros of other options. Also, great video! Looking forward to the other classes
I'd like to build a sword and board fighter with a throwing weapon, sounds like a lot of fun. And with the free archetype rule I think it could be viable. It'd be nice to have a bit more in the way of control, but a tanky defender type with some ranged versatility seems like that might eat up my resources.
Currently, I'm playing an Ysoki Thief with the field medic background. He's a combat medic who had to turn to a life of thieving, patching up criminals and mercenary work after the Goblin Blood Wars. He's pretty fun to play with the battle medicine skill feat and twin feint. He's loosely based on Usopp from One Piece. Tells a lot of tall tales. It's fun to roleplay. We've been having trouble in the campaign with getting downed quite often and still learning the system. We almost got TPK'd by a freakin' wild boar...smh. I've since drawn up a Dhampir Fighter/ Barbarian with the fangs ancestry trait. Big emphasis on using his fangs to grapple and as a weapon. when things go real south, he has a katana with Power Attack and a longbow for range. Any sugesstions as Dhampir is hard on healing? We only have a cleric for that.
Dhampirs, 99% of the time, are like thier "sire" in that they need blood to survive. (Think Blade) if your PC is strong enough, he could theoretically grapple, next turn continue the grapple and bite into them somewhere and get healed a certain amount. I recommend a Monk/Barbarian. Combine the monk's skill with the barbarian rage and it could get really interesting really fast.
Unfortunately Guardian's Deflection is actually a fencer feat, not usable with sword and shield; you need one melee weapon and your other hands free. Though I suppose this might work with a buckler, or if for some reason you only have your shield drawn and not your weapon.

You're a bit wrong on the great weapon build, you can remove a hand for free thus you can drink your potion for example with no additional actions, but you need to spend an action to put your hand back on the weapon
Especially if the weapon is like a bastard sword, katana and dwarven waraxe, because they can be used as one handed weapons too.
Wait..... Seriously the game demand from you to use action to just PUT THE FU..ING HAND ON THE WEAPON ?????
Especially on the guy like fighter ? The only guy who can be called the master of weapons.
Well what can I say " Homebrewing is coming ".
Do you need to spend an action to put a hand back on? I've never seen that rule and can't find it.
@@Jacob-dl7bw It is on page 272 in the core rulebook table 6-2: changing equipment. Changing your grip by adding a hand to an item is an interact action, so costs an action, while removing doesn't since it is a release. Both require two hands. I could be misunderstanding it though.
@@ZMSKfullpower tbh in my game we don't bother with the action to put a hand back on either. But rules as written you do
If you use overwhelming blow, do you increase multiple attack penalty before of after the hit?
So this is CRB only? No APG?
love the content
In the Extinction Curse campaign my brother is playing a staff acrobat fighter (no free archetype though) and hes loving tripping everything with his scythe and getting free AoO against them when they stand.
Okay, I'll like and subscribe. Just this once, because I'm afraid that that thing will eat my soul if I don't
Looking forward to the Wizard one.
Sword and shield is also duel weapon as well.
probably playing 2e for the first time soon.
You are correct. You can drop the weapon in one hand, effectively carrying it in one hand. But it takes an action to regrip it properly.
You can carry 2 handed wpns with 1 hand. You have to use an action
in combat to add the 2nd hand to wield it.
So... Bully and then add Barbarian Archetypes ... yeah, that's what I'm here for
I wonder how would you build Superstition barb. Wecan assume that he has Chirurgeon alchemist in pt.
Wouldn't it be possible for a character to combine fencer with bully? Since they both need a free hand
I have to beg to differ with you when it comes to drinking potions with the two-handed sword or ox…Haven’t you ever heard of the idea of letting go of the handle with one hand grabbing your potion off of a potion belt holding the cork with your teeth and drinking the potion? It’s easily done
Can you please go over the grimstalker in pathfinder 2e?
Do any of the archetypes help the thrown weapon idea?
i am not sure this is how the commenting bit works but i am gonna do it anyway
Umm... what happened to the Inventor Feats video?
Duelist works very well with Kinetecist free dedication. The scaling of Kinetecist moves based on level is supernice. And as you have a free hand already most of the time anyways.. very little downside
The great weapon fighter does great offensively but I'd like something that helps mix it up with some cool defensive stuff I was trying to make a bastard sword duelist until I figured out letting go of your weapon takes the interact action.
NoNat1s: Witch with a celebrity archetype.

The lovecraftian algorithm made me subscribe
In p2e if you are wielding a 2h weapon, say a greatsword, can't you hold it in one hand to access items with you're now free hand? Similar to holding a bow?
You kinda can but have to spend one action to regrip the weapon before attacking
So what you're telling me is that the desk building one really was Inventor 2
Hey idk if its already been done or suggested, but have you thought about a video that rates or goes over pros and cons for different weapons? Idk about anybody else, but I find myself falling back on the same weapon (bastard sword, because that versatility is too good) with way too many of my characters and would love to hear somebody talk about the pros of other options. Also, great video! Looking forward to the other classes
6:28 wait, I thought that if you equip a buckler, you still have a free hand.
the crooked door is driving me nuts
What do you guys think about unnarmed fighters? Like with the martial artist archetype
Which one of these is the best damage dealers overall?
For max damage in one hit? Probably two-handed weapons. But dual-wielding will probably edge it out in total damage, especially at higher levels.
I'd like to build a sword and board fighter with a throwing weapon, sounds like a lot of fun. And with the free archetype rule I think it could be viable. It'd be nice to have a bit more in the way of control, but a tanky defender type with some ranged versatility seems like that might eat up my resources.
I had the same idea, Shield Bashing for Melee and Shurikens for Range.
Coment down bellow
I wish thrown build got more love
Sadly I can't find a 2e group to join.
Unfortunately Guardian's Deflection is actually a fencer feat, not usable with sword and shield; you need one melee weapon and your other hands free. Though I suppose this might work with a buckler, or if for some reason you only have your shield drawn and not your weapon.
