Yeah chief this mix don’t smell right
LOL
Those are the little tricks that comes with experience and most importantly, knowing your surroundings and gear.
Absolutely!
You can't definitely FEEL when things resonate pleasingly.
This is up there with the best advice youve ever given man. Great vid 🤌
Hope it helps!
Just finished a mix using my nose, sounds pretty good!
One thing that helps me with the plans of my mixes is to listen to references at DIM level about -30db, and check drums and bass, voices and melodies at that level, and compare them with my mixes.
Since the pandemic, it was thanks to you and many more professionals who shared their knowledge and ways of working that I was able to take a leap in the quality of my recordings, editions, mixes and masters.
So I am completely grateful.
God Bless you Colt!
greetings from Argentina!
Thank you for your two cents, a great piece of advice! Funny how as a live mixing engineer, I need to asses the sub relationship with the rest of the material every day, every venue by how I *FEEL* it, but I have never thought about it like this in the studio environment. Talk about connecting the dots! :D
Thanks so much! I've been feeling certain resonances in the car that mean something is 'right', and I now need to build out those same 'markers' in my mix room.
That is so interesting man, great video !! as always !
Thanks Colt, your channel is legit and full of really great insights! Personally , When I feel a mix may be done I like to listen out in the hall way to make sure nothing is jumping out. For low end I like to put on a reference track and move around my room feeling the low end and then do the same with the track I'm mixing. I also like to listen at super low volumes sometimes as I've always found that a great mix never falls apart even at the lowest of volumes.
Colt, I've watched your channel from the beginning & don't recall you mentioning the Subpac Pro sub frequency replication systems that strap to one's back or on a chair... Have you heard of these, or used one?
When you mentioned feeling the desk and floor resonate together, it made me think of the Subpac.
I’ve heard of them, primarily for use for drummers in alive event. While I’ve never used one, so I can’t say for certain, I would imagine they would lack the resolution needed for precise, audio, mixing.
You said at the beginning you would link to the 'counting crows' video...can't see it? Also, thanks for the video, great stuff!
Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻
Thanks for watching!
I will most commonly listen to mixes on every speaker possible, especially common speakers like earbuds and the car
Great recommendation! I discovered this same thing with the low end and my keyboard tray vibrating. Btw, what's FOCUS MODE?
This should be called mixing after dark. So physical.
If a snare is too harsh in 5k I feel it behind my eyes it almost forces me to blink
Also I can feel the low end in my chest if that makes sense.
Probably the WA gear....
Did Warm Audio fire you or something? How many comments you gonna leave about them
Did I miss anything WA in content.
Probably a Behringer employee Troll.😂
What happened to the "gear that sucks" video? Some companies got butt hurt?
I thought I was crazy to like when my desk started to resonate with the low end. Even sometimes I like to feel the heavy guitars palm mutes in my desk. It's a desk, not a console. And wooden desk.
my favourite one is to know a good kick & bass for a pop record snare is in the car test at Volume 17/30 if the rear view mirror doesn’t bouncy bounce a lil then it aint ready lol 😢😅
Hey Colt quick question.. I’m using a focusrite Clarett 8pre with my hardware.. Is it normal when using multiple hardware insert to mute the last insert on your control software.. The reason I ask is because I get a feedback if I don’t mute .. Protools is my DAW of choice..
Nice to know that "touching woofers" isn't weird at all. Thanks
What you’re discussing here is literally the main fundamental skill that one should focus on when learning how to mix, or more specifically learning and ultimately understanding the art and importance of Eq.
It’s quite literally Learning, and training ones self to not only listen to or hear the mix, it can be just as important and beneficial to the overall finished product, if one can eventually feel it.
I’m surprised you didn’t already know this…
Ya... for me, if you can feel the bottom end of your mix in your stomach, there's probably too much bottom end😅
I touch to woofer! I mix for a livestream where the control room is close to the auditorium. Not ideal, but it is what it is. Sometimes I touch to woofer to make sure the bass I’m hearing is in my mix and not resonating from the near by room.
Absolutely! My feet propped up on the speaker stands gangster style helps me feel the kick and snare
Wonder why knowbody cut around 100hz from the start?
I have a window looking outside in my mix room and it only rattles when the low end is sitting right in the mix. 😆 Otherwise it never makes a noise.
I can mix Realy good now. With my event opal 🙂 the detail is super .
Love the approach, this is Jedi producing/engineering imo
Cicely ?
Dr Joel Fleishman: mmm sounds familiar
Dude for sure/ I notice when I can feel the low end in my feet
Typically the mixes that suck are usually the source material. In my sphere I’m getting a lot of live, definitely NOT session level players and singers. And usually engineers that only have experience running and gunning live shows.
On you 2 BUS /Mix Buss...Roll off 30Hz. ( whichever Octaveper/Slope ) should have removed MOST of the LOW FREQ> SYNTHS...so go on ?...I'm Commenting as I Watch/Listen :). YUP!, I don't hear the renanace in my floor ( because we all have diiferent set -Ups ) but I do touch the Outside diameter of the Woofer to feel ( compared to my Ref. Tks ) There you go...Very good Point..."MARKERS" (what ever it is) :)
moral of the story: low cut everything 😂
My mixes are always muddy even thos its gotten better with time
It also seems when Ive exported my tracks the volume increases more slowely than a known song from spotify when i turn up the volume knob.
Be sure to check out my magic is in the mid range video. It will help with this problem.
@@ColtCapperrune Will do :D Thanks!
Try NS10s - they sound like crap if your mix is muddy while most new monitors sound pretty good when you play a muddy mix
@@huberttorzewski i got the KRK Rokit 5s
weird you are describing things like that. I feel stuff like that too. when 200hz hits my ears just the right way, it makes my head feel funny. that's how I know it sounds good.
I have some presonus E5's and I have a top end sizzle kinda like what your describing. just before it becomes like, overwhelming.
sometimes I can feel low-end in my body even though i'm wearing headphones. then I know it's hitting, it's how I feel reference audio in mixes I like.
Hint: may be that you aren’t knowledeable about the genre specific treatment. Worse, it may be that you don’t really understand mixing science; you’ve been a lucky faker so far.
