Greatest video to ever be uploaded to this channel. ALC files have opened a whole new world for me. Instead of trying to tackle creating entire tracks in a session I instead work on 'sketches' and ideas saving them for later use
Too bad it’s sequencer sucks. FL’s piano roll is vastly superior which is why i still use it over Ableton even though Ableton does have a better workflow. Fortunately, FL is moving more and more toward being able to emulate the best parts of Ableton while also keeping the best parts of FL studio. If I ever leave FL Studio it will be for Bitwig, not Ableton. Bitwig does everything Ableton does (their team are all former Ableton employees) and so much more. I really can’t understand why anyone would use Ableton over Bitwig other than it’s more popular so there are more people using it.
That's a massive tip... I have around 200 projects saved and organising all the clips like this will help me consolidate those ideas into a manageable workflow. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I use this all the time. I did not know most people don't use it! I got tired of making my sounds over and over and not getting the same sound so this is what I did to use it again!
Ableton is the best! When I started using it there were hoity-toity musicians/producers telling me that Pro Tools was better (which in some ways it can be). Now I see them struggle, taking 3-5 minutes to do simple things that Ableton can do in seconds. Great video, subbed!
Great use of ALCs. I hadn't thought of organizing my Patches with just the ALCs. Much better than cluttering the library with an ALC preview + an ADG rack. Thank you!
Awesome. Found this out by accident when I got 9. Thought drag and dropping it would just make a midi clip, but this is way cooler than that. Great for ideas I dont want to save in a set, but would rather not throw away.
You can also click the save preset button on the vst or instrument you are using and it just saves it to the user library. I love saving patches with preset equing and compression, I just don't really like saving a midi information. That's what the piano is for lol.
You may please make a video on live ableton music production tutorial containing midi controllers and audio inputs through microphone, guitars, percussions etc' thankyou'
Here’s a tip I learned by accident years ago. Drag and drop your whole channel into a folder and it does the same thing as what he’s doing here. This accident saved me so much time on certain synth patches I created.
If using this with an audio recording of a VST, like his kick example, I am pretty sure that the setting in the preferences, Library->Browser Behavior-> Collect FIle on Export needs to be set to Always. Otherwise when you exit the set the .alc file when brought back into a new set shows sample offline. The raw audio is saved to User library -> Samples -> Processed -> Crop. The .alc file references the .aif file here when you want to pull it back into a new set. Mine was set to never and I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out why the ALC file was offline.
How about a split keyboard tip? =)) I want to be able to play multiple instruments with a single keyboard, bottom of the keyboard is latchable drums & bass, middle of the keyboard strings, and upper part of the keyboard some bells & whistles... Is there a quick way to set that up? to be able to play grouped multiple instrument tracks with a single keyboard... thx
just : thank you!! do you have an idea to save for example the waves used for a drumrack, so if you delete the from the library, they wille be saved anyway ?
I have been doing it the ugly way of going back to the project, copying the track, switching back to the one I was working on, and praying to god that it fit the vibe right... wow I feel dumb now
Hi, I noticed most of the Ableton Live information available is for electronic type music. I’m wanting to use ableton for modern county music, live and recording, with loops and modern county/pop sounds. Any ideas where I can find good resources for this?
can you give some tips on how to automate your basslines to give them more character and keep them interesting, i know about automating cut off and stuff and decay, but was wondering if theres any cool combinations of automation parameters that work well you could show us
dude damn this was sick af! Im just learning neuro bass and stuff using just operator, and now I can save the alc files and it really saves me a bunch of time. Sweet gods of bass
This may be dumb questions but how do you import 'Ableton packs' or VST's into the Ableton interface? Are Packs and VST's the same thing? I know this is probably really rudimentary stuff but I'm struggling. I'm currently using windows 7.
Hey, so Ive converted a bunch of Maschine drum kits into drum racks and I have the previews in .wav form currently. How would i get them to preview when i select the drum kit preset?
How about clips which are made with Sampler/Simpler? When i try to export ALC file it saves with it's own subfolder where the sample is saved? Is there any option to save it with a single ALC file?
I'm about to buy Push 2, please tell me how to connect Push + Midi Controllers (2 units) to the computer, not how to use but how to connect them, thanks forever if you can help me with that!
When I audition the alc files I have to click twice to get each to play which is annoying (whereas the adg files you can just push the down arrow and it'll automatically play), any suggestions on how to do the same for alc files?
How would I import a Master 32 Track song already mixed down to 2 track stereo (wav, mp3, Aif) into a new Live Session multi-track environment so that I can add vocal harmonies and other instruments to my Stereo Master.. Using a New Live Session with tracks 1 & 2, to split my Stereo Master into Left and Right signals? Any help anyone can give me would be Greatly Appreciated! Thanks!
yes great advise, i love sound desing and usually i never finish a track, i´m always in the pre production stage, getting interesting ideas but so lazy that i save all the project what is a non sense and a caos + a waist of space
Awesome, I had stumbled upon these but I think instantly forgot, nice I have been building a lot of patches for Synths mainly third party. And the Myriad of ways to save things is immense however also a bit intimidating a video on all the ways to save and the uses of the file types would be nice. I am finding that the hardest thing to get my head around. I am getting better though nice. I am going to work my way through some of my productions now and make a few of these. Nice one.
Is there any way to 'dump' all parameters for any given instrument to a midi clip on the fly? In a way, it would like 'saving' presets within a midi clip. Imagine starting with a blank instance of Operator, make some adjustments and then dump/print the current state of Operator into a midi clip. Keep in mind, this would NOT be the same as simply recording the adjusted parameters into clip automation, this would save ALL parameters (even the un-adjusted ones) to the clip. Any ideas?
Not sure if I totally follow what you are asking. If you want to add the parameters of an instrument to a midi clip, then simply make a copy of that instrument and paste it to the new channel with the clip on it. What you are asking for specifically may not be possible, but it's important to remember that there are usually work around solutions. Try to think about all the different ways you could accomplish your goal and you may surprise yourself by discovering the answer in a new way!
Liam Shy imagine that every available automation parameter in a clip even elope editor had a single point at the very beginning of the clip. that way you could make adjustments on a duplicate clip, but the first one would remain in changed (because the previous clip had an "anchor" parameter automation point). I did some research and I THINK ClyphX can do something like this with "snapshots".
Ahhh yes ok I understand. Yes you would need an advanced solution such as Max For Live / MIDI Remote Scripting with Python. Clyph-X is absolutely fantastic! All of Stray's work is top notch and I would highly recommend his Scripts. Have fun!!
Can you show me how to use Reason Rewire on my Windows 10 based pc? I copied the Rewire.dll file over to where all of my plugins are located but it still doesn't load up. I wish Ableton could search for plugins in more than one folder.
I´ve got nearly in any work i make, in the middle of the progress of the project ideas, which are great, but don´t match to the current project. I think this is a heavy weapon for any music producer, and of course a heavy weapon of Ableton Live. But i got one question more: So it isn´t a Ableton Live Clip ´til you save it manually in an folder, f.e. the Ableton Project Folder, or of cause the User Library. Than all the Clips i´ve made in the Session View are only just Content of the Tracks of the Ableton Live Sets, right?
Is it possible to preview the ALC without having to click on the Preview section? It's so annoying to have to select the ALC, then use the mouse to click to previewing it.
If you browse through other live sets and projects within abletons browser, you will also find those clips. Great for remixing or bringing back ideas from older projects.
@@Smellikenapalm It affects all clock resp. time synchronized plugins when an audio latency happens before them. You'll notice that its timing runs 100ms ahead...
I've been using alc files for years, by closing a previous project, and dragging out the portion needed into the the new project. Also, how does one join your tutorial group???
Idea For Future Tip: Another way to route audio in Ableton, is to use the compressor in a rack chain, with the compressor's sidechain and monitor left on. You can make two chains this way, for two different audio sources, then create a macro to crossfade between them. This way you can make a DJ crossfader all in one rack, rather than using the default Ableton crossfader. This method can be used as an alternate way to create send/return effects but just in one track.
Darn, I was hoping this would work for dummy clips using the chain selector method but it appears to be a time-sucker (takes like five minutes to create each ALC file).
I remember the great ".ALC" saving option from a long time ago, but the auditioning part makes this feature really amazing. Thanks for reminding me this though (: (I work a lot with Cubase and FL Studio and as far as i know they don't have this option, really sad)
This is the 1st useful Ableton tip I've found in 2 years.
Greatest video to ever be uploaded to this channel. ALC files have opened a whole new world for me. Instead of trying to tackle creating entire tracks in a session I instead work on 'sketches' and ideas saving them for later use
Oh man, since 2012 I have wondered if it were possible to make my own default patches like this! Talk about a time saver, thank you.
Damn. Im just switching from FL to Ableton and jesus... Abletons workflow is so much quicker and cleaner.
Mitch S ....it is. I used to love FL. Ableton now every day.
Mitch S yeah I was fl guy for years, Ableton is awesome
I've switched to ableton aswell, wouldn't go back to fl even if you'd pay me :D. Ableton is KING!!
FL studio will always have a warm place in my heart...but Ableton is FAR superior and I love it :D

I love how neat everybody's studio in these videos are
Ok this is crazy good, been going through my old project saving all the elements as ALC! AMAZE!
That's a massive tip... I have around 200 projects saved and organising all the clips like this will help me consolidate those ideas into a manageable workflow. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
That is freaking amazing.... I had so many ideas that I didn’t want to save in a specific folder but this is so useful! Thank you so much!
I use this all the time. I did not know most people don't use it! I got tired of making my sounds over and over and not getting the same sound so this is what I did to use it again!
Thank you. THANK YOU! How have these been missing from my life for so long???
I have done this for quite some time. This increased workflow times 1000
I've been using Live for years but this is life-changing.
nailed it with the sound auditioning!!!....thanks a lot professor!!
Thank you!
awesome trick,! by the way, how can i export MIDI mappings?
Your the only person who actually talks about this... thank you
Awesome. Found this out by accident when I got 9. Thought drag and dropping it would just make a midi clip, but this is way cooler than that. Great for ideas I dont want to save in a set, but would rather not throw away.
Amazing ...never thought about exploring alc files...what a time saver, thank you :)
You can also click the save preset button on the vst or instrument you are using and it just saves it to the user library. I love saving patches with preset equing and compression, I just don't really like saving a midi information. That's what the piano is for lol.

Very useful and great for re-visiting sounds you've come up with, keeping them all organised and in 1 place is pretty handy. Thanks for sharing
This Is Really Kickass & Made my life sooooooooooo much easier ! i was always wondering how ableton stock presets had previews
I just discovered this and wow! It's certainly going to be very helpful in the future.
Video was very well organized and super helpful at the same time. My favorite kind of video! Thanks :)
Here’s a tip I learned by accident years ago. Drag and drop your whole channel into a folder and it does the same thing as what he’s doing here. This accident saved me so much time on certain synth patches I created.
Thats what i do, but it saves it as an als file. Works the same as far as i can tell.
I just switched from Reaper to Ableton and loving it! This just made my new workflow in Ableton even better! Great video! 👍
Reaper is touuuuugh! Glad you're liking Ableton though. Be sure to follow us if you wanna learn more about Ableton
came back from 3 months to say this has literally changed everything
OH MY FUCKING GOD ! you win 2017 with this tip
Haha awesome, thanks Wis!
I do this all the time actually. I agree about the organizing your sounds with folders, they look nicer and make it easier to find sounds later.
Great tip, now will be using all the time.

Fantastic info. Been using Ableton way too long to not have known this.
i was going to say just use an effect rack or instrument rack, but his method allows you to store midi and maybe automation as well.
Wonderful tip!! Very helpful. Thanks a ton!!
How about a split keyboard tip? =)) I want to be able to play multiple instruments with a single keyboard, bottom of the keyboard is latchable drums & bass, middle of the keyboard strings, and upper part of the keyboard some bells & whistles... Is there a quick way to set that up? to be able to play grouped multiple instrument tracks with a single keyboard... thx
The force is strong with this one. Ableton master Jedi.
just : thank you!!
do you have an idea to save for example the waves used for a drumrack, so if you delete the from the library, they wille be saved anyway ?
Why doesn't the Automation save for auditioning in Live's Preview ?
you´re a genius! Thanks! Easiest way to save your favorite instruments
Very good explanation. Excellent communicator.
Wow Liam, that's awesome....
Thanks for this video!
Super Useful....
I have been doing it the ugly way of going back to the project, copying the track, switching back to the one I was working on, and praying to god that it fit the vibe right... wow I feel dumb now
Same here! This will definitely help me A LOT!
I feel you, lets die.
Great tip for use in Live desktop but Push 2 doesn't show these ALC file additions in its browser?
ALC are dope, it's just a revolution in the Creation process, time saver, tweak field ... good tuto
Hi, I noticed most of the Ableton Live information available is for electronic type music. I’m wanting to use ableton for modern county music, live and recording, with loops and modern county/pop sounds. Any ideas where I can find good resources for this?
Sir it would be great help if you could arrange a breakdown session for Ed Sheran's Shape of you.
I'm having trouble with the tempo signature.
Noted, thanks for the comment!
Liam Shy Thank you sir
can you give some tips on how to automate your basslines to give them more character and keep them interesting, i know about automating cut off and stuff and decay, but was wondering if theres any cool combinations of automation parameters that work well you could show us
This is an incredible feature! I am a beginner, and I am going to use this feature a lot!
awesome!
I didn't realise it also made a preview, thanks!
Came here from Flylo's Instagram story.
Hey same. Seriously though how did no one know about this
Idk. I found out about it a long time ago. What's your soundcloud?
Same! Wanna collab?
Maybe homie got any way to keep in contact?
Al same
Does that work for midi?
I know Live in and out but this was the think i was struggeling till now :D Thanks !!! Great Vid!
dude damn this was sick af! Im just learning neuro bass and stuff using just operator, and now I can save the alc files and it really saves me a bunch of time. Sweet gods of bass
Thank for covering this.
Amazing! Just learned it from the man himself. Keep it up Liam!
Super! I will definitely use this all the time. Thanks!
instrument rack or alc? which is better
This may be dumb questions but how do you import 'Ableton packs' or VST's into the Ableton interface? Are Packs and VST's the same thing? I know this is probably really rudimentary stuff but I'm struggling. I'm currently using windows 7.
Great tip! Wish there was a key combo that would do the save / folder and ALC conversion.
Hey I just found your video. This is great! So are Ableton Live clip files (.alc) similar to Rex files? Am I understanding this correctly? Thank you.
Hey, so Ive converted a bunch of Maschine drum kits into drum racks and I have the previews in .wav form currently. How would i get them to preview when i select the drum kit preset?
oh man, thank you bro. Can't thank you enough for this. I was looking for something like this for awhile :)
How about clips which are made with Sampler/Simpler? When i try to export ALC file it saves with it's own subfolder where the sample is saved?
Is there any option to save it with a single ALC file?
I'm about to buy Push 2, please tell me how to connect Push + Midi Controllers (2 units) to the computer, not how to use but how to connect them, thanks forever if you can help me with that!
that's so awesome! i never realised that .alc files are also saving 3rd party settings. thanx!!!!
Man !!! This is exactly what i've benn looking for for ever. ... you made my day !!!! Thank you mate
When I audition the alc files I have to click twice to get each to play which is annoying (whereas the adg files you can just push the down arrow and it'll automatically play), any suggestions on how to do the same for alc files?
Great Tip !!! You Guys are rocking !! @Pyramind !!!!
Thanks Julian!
Does the auditioning work on Push too?
Yes!
Thanks!
Hello :) Can you load .ALC files via Push 2 straight into a track? Would be nice but can't find how ...
Super useful - Thanks!
the real question is tho, why is your default project set at 348 bpm
Ive been doing this for a long time except using Audio Effect Racks to save it. I like the preview thing with this method though.
yes great advise, i love sound desing and usually i never finish a track, i´m always in the pre production stage, getting interesting ideas but so lazy that i save all the project what is a non sense and a caos + a waist of space
You'll be pleased to know I do use alc files and have done for a while, but this was still v helpful! I like the workflow setup point also.
World-class lesson! Congrats & thanks a lot!!
I try doing this with audio files, but doesn't save the effects just the sample. Any ideas?
Thanks, its great. But you should be able to preview them with push2
Could you suggest some great *free* plugins? I'm an ableton beginner

I'm not a Reason or PC guy - but I will mention it to our team!
How can you use them in Push 2?
Will this save the exact preset I was using or do I need to note that?

Can we use unauthorized third party instruments or plugins
in an authorized ableton live 10
do you mean like cracked software?
Yeahhh.......is there is any solution for that?????
If u dont mind .......then can i get ur gmail id????

what a brilliant lesson!!!
