Hypoxemia - A Practical Diagnostic Approach

The 5 pathophysiologic mechanisms (VQ mismatch, shunting, impaired diffusion, low FiO2, and hypoventilation) to hypoxemia is not a practical approach to a patient with hypoxemia.
In this video, we discussed a practical approach that can be used at the bedside which incorporates the lung exam and response to oxygen therapy.

Why is oxygen therapy helpful in PE? If the blood can't reach the alveoli to receive the air, why does giving a higher % O2 helpful? Is it just that the alveoli that are still perfused receive more, and that compensates for the ones that have V/Q mismatch? Thanks for all you do!
