I don’t think there’s anything wrong with your content, I find you really enjoyable and genuine. I’m just in the portion of your audience that doesn’t watch all your videos. Most of the topics don’t interest me, but anything about UA-cam always intrigues me, so I’m happy to be here for things like this 😊

The algorithm is a mysterious beast to say the least. But I would say the more subs interested in different subjects means that when a video goes out and your CTR is lower, you'll generally have no chance of it going viral. That's why you see those channels based on one niche like Minecraft for example do well because they have a high CTR and watch time. Their audience is focused. You can still have a video go viral but it's a lot harder. Usually a video will go through a test period to an outside audience and if it ticks enough boxes it will get moved onto the next stage, tick enough boxes again and it will move up again. It's all done in stages. That's why sometimes you might have a video go viral and then suddenly die. It failed to tick enough boxes for the next stage. This is why click bait still works well. It get's that high CTR. You then need a high watch time. Pretty much golden from there. But that's easier said than done.

Of course, you have to focus, Jake. UA-cam analytics has already told you not to be a Jack of All Trades! I subscribed because of your first, and very successful, "how much do I make" videos, and then you dropped the ball! If you want to make money on youtube, you need to focus. Don't go from "I will show you success secrets of youtube" to "Legos, wheee!" cuz it's irrelevant. I subscribed for a reason, and if you don't upload content I want, I'll change the channel. Good job so far, by the way, and I wish you success, but please find your path and follow it!

Great video telling it as it is not many do that and it is important for new you tubers to now what they are getting them self into and how much effort people really do put in. I was really surprised how little you actually got for all your effort. Don't be disheartened like you said hopefully things will pick up in the future for everybody. Interesting and very honest video Dr Jake. I've just subbed, so hopefully you'll get to 66K subs soon. I mainly watch your revenue videos as I have not much interest in Lego. I do think that niche is very important. The algorithm needs to know who is going to be interested in your videos. If you release a video that isn't your usual type of video then the algorithm is still going to push your video to your usual viewer type. If they aren't interested because the subject has changed they may not click. I think it may take the algorithm a while to catch up if you change the focus of your channel completely, but that might require a new subscriber base. However I'm very much a novice when it comes to the algorithm, and I hope it learns your new??? focus soon. Thanks again

I always enjoy watching the good doctor on a Saturday morning. I think the problem is simply that there are far too many people on UA-cam now with so much content being uploaded that it's become a victim of its own success. UA-cam success now comes from shock videos, reaction videos and people that scream and shout as they dance around looking like idiots. It's what I call the You've been framed effect.
You've been framed was a TV show in the 90s where people sent in their home videos of funny things happening, back in the days when it was rare to have a video recorder. The first series was brilliant and so funny but then once it got popular and they started paying for each clip, you could tell that many of the clips were faked. People would set things up and pretend it was an accident and the whole value of the show was diluted.
I've been through a similar thing to you on my channel where I changed from being a driving instructor to a hypnotherapist. I lost a lot of views and it's crazy how people would rather watch mindless car crash videos than learn how to change their whole life but that's the sad state of the world today.

  • @davidkay969

I only watch a handful of the videos you upload but stay subscribed for them rare gems. To get more constant views (engagement) in my opinion you need to stick with a niche or you’d be better off having a second channel and separating your content, 2 videos a month on each. If you are planning to stick with the one channel think about 2 videos a week (yes it would be more work) so you can capture all your subscribers.
If it’s just a hobby then the payments are just a bonus and should be treated as such? Hope you keep going and find what works for you!

I'm not surprised. The UA-cam market has got a lot more competitive. Your long term viewers will likely have subscribed to lots more channels, so they'll be seeing your videos recommended less, just because there is so more content. I used to see your videos being recommended to be a lot , but less so now, and I suspect its because (a) I've subscribed to so many other content creators (b) UA-cam recommends the creators who get lots of traffic (c) like you say, the subjects your channel covers are so broad

This is very interesting but also depressing, so much is at a mercy to an algorithm. I just don't like the idea of a channel that's just some very specific topics and nothing else as its playing the chasing algorithm game. How much revenue do you get on these videos after the first 48 hours. How much is recieved for old high performing videos or has they tapered off as well? So if filming and editing is about 2 hrs in total I wonder how much the lifetime earnings from those, 2hrs used is.
In terms of growth I've heard many people (even shops) do the whole make it big on tiktok as its easier and then push people to the UA-cam channel or wherever else as the way to grow themselves

UA-cam is now "recruiting" creator's from other platforms and paying them a premium. No doubt they push those creator's more than small channels. They'd be stupid not to push who they are paying extra just to get them on the platform. Once the dust settles between all the platforms and the creator draft it might return to normal. I think it's probably gonna get worse first because the process is really now just starting.

You hit on the main problem about half way through the video: a lack of consistent subject matter. If people can't identify at least in a roundabout sort of way why they'd want to stick with your channel and UA-cam's algorithm can't easily point viewers to another related video of yours then, yeah, they're going to click away. Add in the utter randomness of some of the topics - a plant bar, really? They cost next to nothing so people can just try for themselves - and you're going to struggle. Generally people care most about researching and thus watching videos about stuff that's expensive or costs enough that there's some pause for thought. Otherwise, if you're going to review food items, it has to be a regular thing that people can reliably think you an authority on - it doesn't have to be all that you do but at least be a regular thing once a week or every other week that you do alongside other topics. Also, your thumbnails could do with some work - there's too much text obscuring the image of the thing the video's about and often the images aren't clear in the first place. It's nearly always worth taking a separate picture in good lighting of the thing, not relying on a video screengrab. My commission is 10% of all future revenue. ;)

I allways knew that the same thing happends to youtube. you grow an audience based on personality over time. years. but you cant reach that dedicated audience if you dont stick to a set type of videos long enough for youtube to show your videos to thoes people. every time you switch topic or meche its like youtube is resetting your "place in the algorythem que"

Nope i'm not surprised at the money value. I get it all the time at work, 'you must be thinking about retiring as your channel is getting so many subs!'. It's only when people get to that 1K subs mark and 4K hour watch time they starting getting some money and then it's only like pennies a day across their whole channel in the early stages. They start throwing more and more videos at the channel and nothing really moves, you then realise that your watch time is going down so you have to maintain that initial freshold otherwise your channel become demonitized but you still earning pennies. Then the truth surfaces of why they are doing it, is it the love, or is it just the money? Like yourself I have Patreon and Ko-fi and that helps soften that blow but if it wasn't for the love I would of quit and got myself a second job of a couple of hours flipping burgers as it will pay more. I see a lot of channels in my niche just get abandoned at 1K. They spend years and years building that audience only to end their commitment after that first first payment comes in (and you have to hit a certain freshhold to have the money released so I bet some have just gone before getting a payout). I wasn't prepared for that day and it was a kick in the teeth but you realised then at a psychological level why you do it, and I am still doing it :) I believe if you keep going and run it like a business of love then one day you will be able to quit your day job, but it takes a certain mindset to do that.
