The story that’s being told here is a little more subtle than directly laying it out for you. Essentially it’s going from the innocence of youth, growing up and gradually getting more and more ambitious until it results in megalomania.
Jamie Laurie stated that the song is about "the idea that we have so much incredible potential as human beings to be destructive or to be creative." "And it's tragic to me that the appetite for military innovation is endless, but when it comes to taking on a project like ending world hunger, it's seen as outlandish. It's not treated with the same seriousness. ... at the same time, I knew there were people at that moment who were being bombed by our own country. And I thought that was incredibly powerful." It is the contrast between these "little moments of creativity, these bursts of innovation," and the way these ideas are put to use "to oppress and destroy people" that the singer feels is "beautiful and tragic at the same time Now with that said, Jonny 5 has evolved a LOT as an emcee. So this is an early version of the song off their EP Flobots Presents Platypus in 2005. I’ve never really cared for this version especially after hearing the one everyone is familiar with off Fight With Tools which came out in 2008. It really is an amazing song that shows how one’s talents can achieve something great or be utterly destructive. It’s a fine line. Always thought of this song as kind of poking at the American dream. Showing the good in it while also pointing out its downsides. Great people too. Met them after a show in NY a few years ago. Very friendly and humble. They do a lot of volunteer and community outreach stuff in Denver. Would like to see you check out “Rise” by them. Some very strong and uplifting lyrics in that one
Bad ass when a reactor doesn't like something. Really unusual for an honest reaction. The original music video made me feel feelings, but hearing the song like this I realize that some of the images in the video were key to the feeling. The song alone doesn't do it for me either.
Everyone telling you this isn't the correct version, are right. There's two versions of this song. This version is from their original album "Flobots present: Platypus". The version you're looking for is from their first studio album " Fight with tools". Which has better mastering and a more refined sound.
I get what you're meaning but I love theessage behind it, ots about how everyone starts off as an innocent kid celebrating the accomplishment of "No handlebars" and depending on the path they take they can save lives, "new anitbiotic" or end them "holocaust"
if anyone starts this reaction ... stop . this is bs ... without the actual video that comes with the original song , it makes no sense .... it starts with 2 friends riding their bikes . their hands are not on the handlebars . they split when they come to a cross road . the left shows a big C .. the other side shows a dove ... the big C is corporation and the dove is peace ... you should know what happens in the center of the video .. .at the end , the left friend watches as the world is conquered ... including the death of his friend .... they are mowed down with machine gun fire ...
This sounds like an early cut. The album version and music video version hit waaayyyyy harder. And you can truly feel what they were going for. The sound was a call out against the endless war in the middle east in the mid 2000s.
Music vid gives more context, from the lyrical video's standpoint it just sounds like the dude is talkin about himself but he was personifying what one can do with power, how a president can lead with a mic, and how they can just kill people with a satellite. Essentially and i know you a deep thinker but yeee music video woulda been a better route for this one.
If you pass on this I really truly feel like that you're one of the people that just don't understand lyrics and this will probably be the only video that I watch of you this band truly stands for something freedom
