I really really hope she makes a sequel or series in this world, it's the first book I've really connected with in a long time!
Both your recommendation, and your Patreon follower's recommendation, sound delicious.
oh my goodness thank you for reviewing this! I've had this book for a while (a Book of the Month pick from last year) but I had never been in the mood to read it yet .. now you have inspired me to read it asap! I was drawn to the book for some reason but I haven't seen anyone review it or include it in a wrap-up. yay now I'm excited!
Loved this one. I can’t believe it’s her debut novel.
I'm glad you enjoyed the book. Books that surprise you are always the best.
And the author is from my city Minneapolis! I didn’t know that until today ❤
I'm so excited to read this! the author is from my state Minnesota.
Thanks, Willow.
I've never heard of this book before, but I must say I'm intrigued.
This is my first time watching one of your videos. You're such a delight! 🫶
I instantly bought this audiobook this morning after watching your video and GOD DAMN I'm so glad I did. I just finished it an hour ago and I absolutely loved it! Thanks so much for the recommendation. This is one of the best dark academia books I've read. Probably my favorite dark academia since Vita Nostra, and honestly, that's an unfair comparison as I could read an entire lifetime worth of DA books and nothing will ever EVER best Vita Nostra. A more apt comparison is probably The Atlas Six. If you like that book you'll definitely like this book too. The only problem with this book is the title. It's factually accurate, but I agree, it's not very compelling. It undersells the fantastic gem of a story contained within.
Thank you, darling, for introducing me to a new favorite!
Now impatiently waiting to get this book from the library. Hope you are well, Willow 💜
This book sounds amazing! It's hard to find original story ideas these days. I am going to check this one out!
Thanks Willow, I passed over this book because of the title. I might pick it up at some point after all ❤
Tbh I wasn't interested in getting this book, you have now changed my mind 😅
Hooray!
Dark academia really isn't my thing, but you've managed to persuade me to give this a try. Btw have you heard that there's gonna be a new dark academia from S.T. Gibson called An Education in Malice? It sounds like something you'd be interested in. And I hope you like Now You're One of Us when you get to read it. :)
Yep, and I can’t wait!
If you like speculative fiction books about books, I highly recommend the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde. Quite possibly the best worldbuilding of any series I've ever read, standout characters, and hysterically funny. My mom and I listened to the audiobooks together when I was a kid and we still quote from them all the time
The book sounds amazing! And it led me to discover the works of Marlon James and the books that inspired him. Thank you for the review; it made me a Patreon . ❤ Keep up the great work! ❤
That’s all so amazing, thank you! 💜
Thanks for another great review! I probably would never have given this a second glance otherwise, because the cover and title...are not so great.
They’re really not. I came so close to giving it a miss
I loved this book. I'm used to books with short chapters, like only a few pages because of my attention span and this has chapters of about ten to fifteen pages but I wizzed through it and would take a break and find myself reaching for the book again ten minutes later. Some woke stuff does creep into it though, like saying boarding schools where about colonialism and assimilation, apologising to a black staff member because....they're black...Yeh weird. Also saying handsome blue eyed men were the least trust worthy ( so meaning white men) made me roll my eyes and a character was in a situation at an airport and because she has brown skin, she was hoping this situation was just commonplace ray cism. And I literally just sighed and said out loud, hunny you ain't white so you don't experience commonplace ray cism. Even with those things I would still recommend it, it's a shame those parts were put it but I didnt let it ruin the book for me. Also I was wondering why you used the Q word in this video? I'm gay and British and know by your accent you are British too so you know this is an anti gay slur over here, I know they use it in America but this ain't America and honestly those people over there who use it know they are using it as an admittance to being a pervert rather than just being gay or something.
Well, I guess I have another book added to my never-ending tbr lol. Would you say this is an October book or a November one? 😏
Oooh, if I had to pick, let’s go with November :)
