- READ THIS!!!!!!!!!
These all bass tracks are taken from Rock Band Moving Pictures album.I am not sure are Red barchetta and Vital Signs bass tracks real moving picture bass tracks. But i think limelight, tom sawyer, yyz ,the camera eye and witch hunt are real moving pictures bass tracks
These isolated Geddy tracks are like crack for bassists.
@rj zander Thanks, but I'm trying to cut back on meth these days ;-)
Don't need to hear anyone else right now! Maybe another day, but for now i wanted to hear Geddy. No one else can be heard when you wish to OD on Ged.
I'm a drummer and I just like Rush crack in general.
Just before I read this comment I said to my girlfriend "I could listen to Geddy's isolated bass parts for the rest of my life"
My wife doesn’t care for it 😂
Just learned this bass solo. Now for the rest of the song. God bless rush and all their glory.
His tone is so badass, especially when he turns on the chorus near the end. Bass tone master!
WOW--revelation: after "pause-rewind-replay" I NEVER heard that overdub of tape speeding in all these years!!! so cool!!!
WOAH ME NEITHER. Nice catch. :D
at 1:50 right?
You think that you're beginning to improve on the bass, and then you listen to Rush and you immediately realise just how bad you are.
Then just when you actually do get a lot better ..... you then realize not only did he play this, but he conceived it to begin with.
Most of the battle to be a great musician is not just mimicking your hero's and learning to do it well, but actually learning how to write awesome stuff like this from scratch.
+JunkAndMusic Tell me about it. Took me three months to learn Tom Sawyer, thinking I had it down I listen to King Geddy playing it, I need more practice lol
Umm and then he plays it while singing. Time for a nap.
Agree 100% with AVOLITE, realistic comment.
+KerryO'Brien and while playing synths at the end, now how tired are you?
Talking to some studio heads/engineers...They used the AMS DMX-15 for the 'chorus'. Left was detuned 3 cents, right up tuned 3 cents. Also, Geddy used Ashly pres during this time. I've worked with a DMX box but never found anybody with Ashly pre amps. When I started recording in 2000/2001, people gravitated towards Sans Amp for the 'Geddy sound' but I was always able to show off our DMX-15 and explain the setting.
I love how you can hear in this version that he shifts from the 1st fret Bb on the A string to the 6th fret Bb on the E string in the chorus. It's a nice, smooth transition that you just don't hear as easily in the final product.
Michael Evans thanks for confirming what I just heard. Interesting change Of position. Wonder why
Yes, smooth change, at least you can hear the string noise when he slides his hand
@@Frobiwan1965 One thing I've noticed about Geddy's playing: he loves second position (5th to 9th frets). If he can play something up there, he will, rather than down at the lower frets. So it jives with his style to slide up positions like that.
not only is he the most skilled bassist out there, but he has such incredible tone! mind-boggling.
Those last 2 minutes of bass dig into my soul music is super cool like that
He’s doing all of this while singing ! Mind blowing
Called don't have a life or day job!
@@joedecker8096 what the heck
@@joedecker8096 he had a wife, kids, lots of real friends and people who cared about him not to mention he spent his time doing what he loved and made millions while still having hobbies
But I get what you are saying
The ultimate rock bass tone.
Ionic sound, iconic voice, iconic and inventive basslines, geddy lee is the best!!
He said he used his fingers on the whole album. He has said that he has never recorded a song with a pic. Even on live tracks where he plays rhythm, he uses his fingers.
Well shit, wish I would have read this before I commented.
The sound he gets,.. so deep, so,.... grungy! His fricken bass growls at you!
The crazy part is, at the end of the song 3:02 , where the bass solo happens, you can actually hear neils snare hits coming through the bridge pickup of the Rick!! Yes, they ARE actually that microphonic. I can do this to my 4001!!! Especially since they sit in that huge cavity, it literally catches sound waves and directs them into the pickup!
This isn't the Rick,it's Geddys 72 Jazz.
@@williambradley8004 The bulk of the track is the jazz, the last "solo" at the end is 100% rick you can hear the tone change. Also a jazz bass is never that microphonic
@@jcamp2112 Hard to tell from the tone change, since that bass section has a ton of chorus effect thrown on it that the rest of the song doesn't have.
@@RCAvhstape Man yeah, i've listened to it again, and it's def the Jazz bass on the ending solo. The tone is the same. My question is, what in the hell made the recording be so microphonic in that section?
@@jcamp2112compression probably, and also I heard that geddy’s Jazz used to have a bad bridge pickup in it.
i could listen this bass track for hours and hours...
WHOA! I thought I'd deconstructed this tune every which way possible sine first hearing it 30 years ago...and then I notice at 1:51-53, the effect of tape fast-forwarding. I never noticed this in the full mix. Cool.
PURE Rhythmic BEAUTY!!!
To think of all the wonderful rush songs and moments, they are all so different, this bass line case in point. Geddy Lee - the best song writer.
my favorite bass track of all rush songs
I love how you can hear the click track during the bass solo at 3:20. As far as all the discussion on the tone, I'd like to add that he's definitely using some chorus/phase from the solo through the end.
I remember hearing this exact video about 10 or 11 years ago… My outlook on music has never been the same.
He wasn't in a band actually. He joined rush as a Bassist but prior to not being in a band, he was introduced to music through guitar, which is probably a good thing.
Thank you so much, AWESOME!!!!
Not a fan of Jazz basses myself, but this is almost certainly a Jazz. The Rick sounds different in the bottom end. But he did not use it as much as Fender or Geddy, because of his endorsement deal, would like you to think.
There was a fair amount of revisionist history when the Sig jazz bass came out.
He used the Steinberger a lot more than folk know too
I love that Rock Band uses original bass tracks and original everything else tracks!!!
his effects in this song are pretty wild and unique from the rest of the album
This kind of this truly shows how brilliant Geddy is.....and yes "BLUESUB6" there are other great bass players out there. I think it's easy for serious fans to think he is the best because overall we think Rush is the best. He is my personal favorite but I like other bass players as well. :)
Geddy is a briliant artist.
Bass lines are just epic!!!
Its so interesting to listen like this. Its almost like appreciating it as an entirely new song.
Geddy with a guitar... Very ironic (non-moving) PICTURE!
What can this strange device be?
Georgia Farmin' when I touch it, it gives forth a sound
Geddy plays guitar too
@@JasonLee1653 yes he sure does just search for rush resist acoustic version live
A) That's not an example of irony.
B) Geddy played guitar before playing bass. He played guitar on "A Passage to Bangkok" and "Xanadu" live (he didn't have the doubleneck just to look way cool on stage, he needed to switch from bass to guitar quickly). He also played guitar in the live acoustic performances of "Resist". He probably writes songs on guitar too.
Geddy Lee is so badass than can make a guitar sound like a bass. Enough said
Awesome, completely awesome!!!
dirty fat bass - love it. Nice shades Geddy!
very good !! super bass.
@intioyarzun Funny you say that. I havent heard anyone play a RUSH song like Geddy. Oh sure, there are some great Bass players that can play some RUSH songs right out of the book, but Geddy doesnt play out of the book. If you ever listened to RUSH with headphones, you would hear that he plays way outside of the printed notes.
One of my favorites
3:00 - 3:13 PERFECT bass solo, why? while it may not be difficult to play or showy its melodic and perfectly placed. Many so called "bass solos" are just a bunch of percussive noises.
Geddy has never used a pick on a studio track. He's said in interviews that he's awful with a pick.
Im great with a pic. Fuck me, I'm better than Geddy Lee !!
Even though that part in Red Barchetta is different, the rest of the song is absolutely right on with the studio release. All of the tiny intricacies that cannot be reproduced are there.
Ok this is the best bass song ever, used to be Another One Bites the Dust but this wins
Couldnt be sure, but he braces his middle finger with the 1st and 3rd and swipes at the strings.... HARD!!! So he's probably catching the string with the end of his nail as he does, or it could be his famous flamenco thing he does.
Pure gold!
@intioyarzun It's both, I truly believe. It's maybe not difficult to play the notes, but to play with the same sense of emotion and rhythm as Ged, that's no easy task- even for the accomplished bassist. Although I do agree on the creativity part, he constantly wrote (and continues to write) bass parts which are completely outside the box, whether the bass acts as the lead instrument or is a supporting role.
Bass (holds acoustic guitar)
mikebell2112 but the bass still sounding
I've been following Rush for the past 30 years and i'd never saw Geddy playing with a pick on bass. The only time you could see him with one is, like you said, at the end of Xanadu BUT he is on the guitar side of is doubleneck making arpegio during Alex's solo. If you've ever saw Geddy playing bass with a pick, please post it. Cheers
He doesn't use a pick, he's said many times he absolutely never uses picks because he can't. He grew his nails instead to give that sound.
@intioyarzun but you have to agree how difficult it is to coordinate playing all of this and singing... than we have something way beyond the average skill. Other quality in Geddy Lee's bass is his catch, the way he takes the most of the instrument, specially with his rickenbacker (too bad he changed instruments), playing hard but without making that annoying fret noise, or when the string hits the coil - I don't know if my basses suck too bad, but those are usual problems for me.
Best ever!
Sick
Y en vivo toca igual de genial mientras canta.
yeah it actuallly sounds like he uses the jazz bass more too, I know his ricky tone and its a bit more trebly then this and his playin is a little tighter with the rick. but either way geddys tone sounds almost the same on every bass i see him play, mainly cus of his amp and his style and hard hitting attacks
You can hear the obvious drums in the background, but then there’s this really nasally drum sound that can be found on all these isolated tracks. My theory is that they recorded drums and bass simultaneously. And the drums are just bleed through the amplification room.
also on old analog tape, sometimes tracks next to eachother could bleed into eachother
@@owenandrew8108 that is very true
...he gets his tone from using quite a bit of compression and a new set of Rotosound swing bass 66 medium light gauge strings.
Of course the details of the settings, speakers etc. are something I could only speculate on
@Fenderjazz1987 Geddy said this album was the first time he used half Ric and Half Jazz, with Signals being the other album that used a lot of Jazz. As a bassist for ten years, Ged head, and Ric owner/enthusiast, I honestly believe this is the Ric. Plus he plays the jazz in the music video, and in all the music videos he's using the bass he didn't use on the album. Also, in an interview on his basses he says Limelight is the Ric. It's straight from his mouth.
Poor old Geddy must be getting confused. In his 2019 book he says that only Tom Sawyer and Vital Signs were the '72 Jazz, which was making its recording debut.
I would have sworn blind that YYZ, The Camera Eye and Witch Hunt were also the Jazz, but he acknowledged that that bass sounded very much like the '77 4001, the Jazz being a bit tighter and more rubbery sounding to me.
if you're talking about the one where he has the 4080 then look at which neck he's playing on. He's playing on the rhythm guitar neck so its pretty obvious why he's be using a pick there.
hey, aren't the first 6 notes the same as what the planets frequencies transposed/ sped up to the level of human hearing are?
Yes.
What?
What
@Shallex What I said is still visible.
What I meant was, scientists found frequencies emitting from each planet ( also the sun) then sped them up into the range of human hearing. That made it possible to determine a pitch. Those pitches can more or less be matched to the 12 tone equal temperament method ( western) of tuning.
And the sounds or "notes" from each planet are pretty close to the selection of notes Geddy chose for the bass line intro part.
@Shallex 🤔😷😁😆
The irony is sweet about the guitar, but I also agree on the crack part. gotta look for more tracks like this.
This is true. From end Signals-End of POW tour.
It is true. What he does live has no relevance to what you can clear hear in the studio recording. I hate chop sticks. I tried them once, but I'm not really able to use them. I've always used a fork since then, but I did try them once. Buy the Jammit track for Camera Eye and listen around the 5:00 minute mark. It is clearly a picked bass line. Cheers.
@burningxdimx this is the Ric its so bright sounding the Jazz bass is more mellow and deep
@Annonymus121
Nope!
A lot of Power Windows is the Steinberger L2
True dat buddy!!!!!
@TheMilford Yeah I think they sent out another version of Working Man with a differnt solo before IIRC.
@mindhead2005 Actually power windows and Hold Your Fire are the wall bass.
symptom of life
So there's a guy on here who really thinks Geddy used a pick while recording this song lol. That's funny. Geddy has even said he uses the finger nails on his right hand like a pick but he's never used a pick on the bass. I've only seen him use a pick at the end of Xanadu when he's strumming the guitar on his doubleneck.
I would tend to agree with you(I have heard the interview with Geddy you reference), but listen to the first few measures of the running line (starting at 0:07) and then compare to the same running line later (1:33). The first one is distinctly picked sounding. Perhaps he was using a fingernail, but there is a distinct difference between the two. This may be what the "guy" was being misled by....
I hear what you're talking about. I think the second section is just more heavily distorted which covers up the picking sound you can clearly hear in the first section. Hell, you never know, maybe he used a pick lol. I doubt it though, I think he just has a massively thick fingernails on the index and middle fingers of his right hand, which basically sound like a pick.
The Pick Police are out there watching for bass abuse. Oh what times are these when Man shall pick monster strings with a plastic widget. It's not natural I tell you. Oh the humanity!
Kids these days? So belittling..we know how bloody important it is, you just choose not to take an notice. Not all of us ' kids ' abuse bass mate
What I believe he was doing is plucking with his fingernail overtop of the bridge pickup. Geddy gets his famous sound (heard later in the song) out of a Jazz Bass by plucking hard as hell inbetween the neck and bridge pickup, you get more of a trebbly weaker sound if you pluck over the bridge pickup.
@dLema1
Jazz bass with DR nickel round wounds and an Ampeg SVT with 2x JBL K240s. CRANK IT and stick a great mic in front of it!
I was basing the setup on what he used in the music video. whether that is accurate or not is really up to what Geddy said he used. but this did sound quite a bit like the Rickenbacker.
This was very nice to hear. Do you have same sort of recording about Animate? That is my favourite song and my favourite bass line from Rush.
40 years ago today
@superhomsar2112
Amazing what actually using an amp for the recording does for the sound. And Geddy could use it too.
I guess Vectron you can believe whatever you want to believe. I am basing my opinions off of 28 years of playing experience, dozens of studio sessions, thousands of hours performing live on stage.
@jndlee92 It was probably a different take, but it's definitely Geddy playing his Rickenbacker. Not a doubt about it.
He used his fingers and not a pick on the moving pictures tour in 81 or 82 in Toronto. I doubt he used one in the studio since I have never seen him use one other than when playing guitar in Xanadu.
Always fingers. This definitely isn’t a pick. Geddy just has a recognizable punch in his playing
Vectron12; I've already mentioned the camera eye numerous times in this thread.
Geddy sold his soul at the crossroads to come up with these bass lines.
@jndlee92 Its true that there is a difference at that point.
oh thats awesome man yeah ricks are definetly amazing when you get the hang the hang of em. i dont know how geddy gets this tone naturally i wish i knew how because my rick dont sound really like this naturally only when i did that thing with my friends line 6 gearbox. but a trick to definitely help gettin closer to this tone is attack hard with your fingers over the bridge pickup.
Matt,
He doesn't get this tone naturally. He is using the 4001 with Rotosound stainless steel 66 jazz strings (which the turned to complete suck lately). Try DR Hi Beams. Fantastic! However I digress. He then ran Ashley preamps which he cranked the gain for the bridge pickup. He also used compression. So get an overdrive pedal and run a compressor. He also ran the Ricky in stereo. Neck pickup is run clean, no overdrive.
You can get his tone much easier today. Get his signature Tech 21 Sansamp Ged 2112 preamp (rack mount). Connect your Ricky to that! You can also run that preamp bi-amped. You can get a used one for under 300.00!
This is a Jazz Bass,not a Rick.
@jndlee92
Could just be an alternate take or a changed edit. That's the beauty of having 24-track tape recorders, you have options in the mix!
Holy crap I had no idea the 3rd verse was so intricate. 😳 ... or 2nd? Beginning at 1:33, in any case.
🤘🏾😀🤘🏾
I don't care who you are.....playing the bass while singing such songs as Anthem and Digital man is hard.
@intioyarzun There's no doubt the key to his greatness is the sum of his parts!
I think the hard finger plucking plus overdrive/distortion causes this sound. And he might have used finger nails too.
i may consider doing that. its really not as hard as you might think you just need enough fingernail to do it. thing is i don't like the feel of having long fingernails all day long so i don't do that often but if its to prove a point then i will
also it is the studio version
@mindhead2005 Flamenco picking he started to use it heavilly :P
@Annonymus121 I said it was the Ric,and by the way it's Wal not Wall
@vaportrails44
Geddy even did an interview saying he played both on the album. Being a bassist and Ric enthusiast myself, I believe he played the jazz on two tracks, Tom Sawyer and Witch Hunt.
burningxdimx YYZ, Limelight, Vital Signs too
@@Frobiwan1965 didn't expect to get a reply to something I posted ten years ago. Yes YYZ but no to Vital Signs and he's said he thinks Limelight was the Ric so that's up for debate. Happy 2020.
i fuckin love the tone
i have a ricky and i was usin this thing called line6 gearbox where i plug my bass into the comp and play with headphones and there were lots of custom tones to chose one, it had a geddy lee replica of this tone. it was fuckin amazin
Sorry mate you were right! I realized this after i posted the comment!
Try and play this while singing at the same time!
we're all entitled to our opinions.
geddy started out on guitar in a band as a kid.
@mindhead2005 nope he only started that on counterparts :P
@belial1237: it does, kinda! but really only the first 35 secs... trippy... it's those Gedworth fingernails!
They have them for every track on Moving Pictures except Tom Sawyer, as that got taken down recently.
I agree 8)
It has a blown rear pickup, So it sounds like the 4001 because it has a .047 capacitor there to cut lows.
His bass tech put it up in a Talk Bass thread. Russ Ryan
The Ric definitely features more than you think - particularly on Permanent Waves. I'm nearly sure thats all Rickenbacker.
The Berger was defnitely on Power Windows,
End of the day, it doesnt matter what he plays, you know its him.
Wen to see them in the NEC and hated the bass sound. That bloody sansamp nonsense.
@Fenderjazz1987 I'm still trying to figure out how he gets that tone.
