- As we approach the 7th Anniversary of his passing, a bittersweet tribute to one of the most amazing songwriters of our time, Dave Carter performing, "Cowboy Singer", with his partner, Tracy Grammer.
Time passes, loss impact fades but Dave Carter REMAINS one of the greatest song writers
Dave Carter lived across the hall from me in the Worcester House Dormitory at the University of Oklahoma. Being a huge music lover, on the first day of classes in the fall of 1970 I heard guitar playing coming from his room so I knocked on the door and introduced myself. We became pretty good friends that year and he used to play me a lot of songs that he wrote to test them out. None of which are on any of his CDs. He took me to his home in Tulsa one weekend and we had a blast. First and only time I have been to Tulsa. I lost track of him when I left OU and it was 4 years after his passing that I found out what happened. I quickly got myself caught up with his music and even met his partner Tracy Grammer in Savannah, GA several years ago. He was a very cool person and a joy to be around. I was very fortunate to have known him. I always thought he would make it someday, and I guess I was right!
I met him in passing at KU @ Lawrence. I missed a second opportunity to see him and thought of well they travel a lot - He'll be back soon. He would not make it back to Kansas. What are road is.... is never certain.
Every now & then when I feel the mood, I listen to this song. Dave's words & the lonesome sound of Tracy's fiddle cut strait to the tears....I Miss Dave, can't believe it's been 7 years= RIP.........Don
I heard Dave and Tracy sing this in October of 2000. What a beautiful song, two beautiful souls.
One of the best songs I've ever heard. Simply amazing.
I'm humbled simply to be watching videos of Dave Carter. There has not been a more diverse or "grass roots" song writer in my lifetime than this gentleman. R.I.P Dave, I love every thing you've written. Thank you Tracy for carrying on and promoting this song writing juggernaught's tradition. I've not related to a song writer more than Dave Carter and without Tracy, the personal depth wouldn't be as true as it is.
Thanks for posting!
Beautifully shot, sung, & strung!
Tracy is the best singer & fiddle soloist --- An angel cowboy singer indeed!
Beautiful capture of their magical joint artistry -- Dave & Tracy is just the very best-est.
Doom and anoint rather than ordain and anoint. Having grown up Mormon I love that turn of phrase.
A+
I missed this very fine performance, but the space at the pub was a very nice venue for live music. A mistake by the McMenamin Brothers for killing it, but they've done so much other good in the community.
Nice video; thanks for posting.
This is astounding! Where was this filmed?
Shot at the St John's Pub, Portland, OR in 2001. Used a rather shopworn Canon DV with back-focus problems and awful lighting and no tripod. ugh
Still, such a gift
Dave Carter is about the worst 'cowboy singer' I ever did hear: a) flat vocals, b) insincere expression of feeling, with a c) a deliberate overemphasis on every other word.
Good Lord A'Mercy...
