The liquids are between the faces of old clocks with flat centers. A larger clock face on the projector which stays still and a smaller one on top which is moved by hand. Wattage is ideally 600 to 1000 watts using old style lamps. If using MR16 halogen lamps, ENX 360W were always nice. Too hot and your plates cook. We always rebuilt projectors with larger lamps and replaced the lenses inside the projector with big glass stage light lenses. I worked in San Francisco with oil, water, & alcohol.
I'm in the process of learning how to do these old school 60's Liquid Lightshows, I managed to score myself an overhead projector that I hope to use, and I'm going to see if I can find some clear glass dishes or something I can use on eBay, after that it's a case of buying all the necessary coloured dyes and mineral oil and etc.
Imagine your favorite 60s group and then being in a dark reefer-smoke-filled Fillmore Auditorium or Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco and the light show throbbing in time to the music. It was an incredible experience--especially when everyone was stoned. I think I recently saw a vid of Janis Joplin and a liquid light show going on behind her--not sure where though. Wouldn't have missed it for nothin!
These old school 60's Liquid Lightshows have a real liquid-organic lysergic quality about them that you don't get with more modern-style lightshows, that's what's so cool about them.
I knew Joshua White back in the days of the Fillmore East. That's where I got my start. One of the nicest guys I ever met! Those were the days when everyone worked together and shared what they knew for the love and good of the shows! That's the spirit I see re-emerging here in KCMO when all the local talent gets together!
Rick Van Hatten. Right on, the shows were amazing and you could watch by the booth ask questions or watch and learn. I loved doing lightshows and tripin. Happy Trails to all!!!!
The pulsing effect is really simple. You take two pieces of curved glass, like the kind they used to use for clock faces, and sandwich a few drops of coloured oil between them. By moving the top piece of glass up and down, you cause the blob to change shape and size.
This bought back an instant memory to me. 1969 Newport Jazz Festival in Newport, R I . Ten Years After and Jethro Till had the Joshua Lightshow going on in the back ground thru the whole performance. Absolutely mind blowing I was in the press box had a press pass.
@VillanovaJunction11 two clock faces together, between them a mixture of blue oil+ orange water, the top clock face is being lifted off and pushed back down again, squeezing it into a blob. the colors underneath are just colored water in a glass dish. just food coloring for the water and candy dye to color the oils (mineral oil... cooking oil, whatever)
it actually syncs amazingly with Wish You Were Here somehow. It you start it right after the radio intro. Was looking for something to use for a screen film for WYWH and tested it. 10/10
Thank you for this. Brings back awesome memories. My two favorite Joshua Light Shows were at the Tommy performance by The Who and the dead on April 28, 1971. Amazing times, remembered in detail to this day.
Weird, I clicked this from a Facebook link, and it started at 3:09, suggesting that I watched this at some point in the past, but forgot about it. I wonder how many years it's been waiting for me to finish. lol
Coolerino! Not sure who did the amazing light shows for San Diego concerts in 60s. Definitely this sort of thing. Mesmerizing, liquid organic shapes and colors. Thank you for posting this.
This vid is on my" Psychedelics" Pinterest board &, I agree, we need the sound (music is the universal language - a series of numbers aligned in harmony) to complete the visual. This happens a lot. I wish people would understand how important this is to everything ~ ~ ~
Greetings from Red Lantern lightshow productions, San Francisco. 50 years ago. Along with the clock glasses, alcohol, Mineral oils and dyes on the overhead projectors, We also used slide projectors with images pertinent to the times... anti war protests. Vietnam war. Urban daily life scenes. Projected through a spinning wheel with gels and openings for a strobe effect.
I've seen quite a number of live psychedelic band performances on TV shows of the late 1960s and it was the norm to chroma key these oil/glycerin/water animations on a blue backdrop or have a camera pointed to a tray of this mixture n key it in live, I think it's really cool!!! :D
@meltingworld2010 I spun for a rave in alaska and told the promoter to scrap the disco lights and get me an OHP and plates and oil. the oil goes in between. It was way coool for sure.
@maureennet2 Thank you! That was very informative. Tell me, is the overhead projector essential or is that the most conveniant method? Reason I'm asking is that I would probably keep the light base, but replace the lense with a camera.

modern digital visualization is strongly influenced by this type of organic flux, the randomness is just more deliberate, although it does over-use fractal manipulation
I am just getting into oil projection. I have one of the desk top projectors... I know I need oil and water.. along with 2 concave clear plates to fit each other.. can someone give me a list of things I need to start... a certain type of dye? certain type of oil? I guess anything a beginner would need to know.
terry riley and joshua light show - always wondered about that scene in midnight cowboy - now i know ! the wisdom of Jarvis - happy trails space children !
steve tull . Hay Steve you can do it yourself with an overhead projector, veggie oil, curved lab dishes, food coloring and imagination and practice. Happy Trails brother ! 🎶🎶🎶✌
can anybody tell me wich kind of colours and oils he used?? and is there an alternative to the overheadprojector and what did he do to get the effect at 0:23 - 0:43 ???
I've searched high and low how to recreate this effect, I can't find anything. If anyone knows where I can buy the kit to do this, or show me how to recreate the effect, I'd really love to know.
Well, I don't think there is any question about it. It can only be attributable to human error. This sort of thing has cropped up before, and it has always been due to human error.
Hey can anyone help me out, I'm trying to find a video like this. A pure silent video with colorful things in motion. For example a colorful jellyfish with a mute background, or neon fire burning, or electricity with constant motion. Thank you :)
Have just been recruited as a light man by some friends calling themselves Five Man Floyd(Syd era stuff). They've already ordered two projectors so I'm behind the curve already. Any direction anyone can give me on gettin them bubbles on the run will be greatly appreciated! Five Man Floyd has a FaceBook and Myspace page and will be hitting the stage late Spring in Massachusetts USA. They are seasoned musicians who love to play. Check out a clip on their FaceBook page. Thanks Steve

Did you know Marc who ran the Pig Light Show at the Fillmore East? I used to help out in Glenn McKay's "Headlights" at the Fillmore West.
Rick Van Hatten. Right on, the shows were amazing and you could watch by the booth ask questions or watch and learn. I loved doing lightshows and tripin. Happy Trails to all!!!!
Nostalgic for a time I never experienced. 💚

The random face at 1:15 freaked me out a bit.
Whoa...yea.
Took me several tries but I got it paused at 1:15 ad I see it.

I'd have to say, this is my most favourite form of representing psychedelia artistically =D
Freaking love oil wheel projection!

eeey man, me too! amazing tune, beautiful liquid lightshow and the groove with the Dead!
Weird, I clicked this from a Facebook link, and it started at 3:09, suggesting that I watched this at some point in the past, but forgot about it. I wonder how many years it's been waiting for me to finish. lol
And I just got my answer: a comment I made 9 years ago (!!!!) fifth comment down! Wow!
I was listening to The Telescopes while watching this. So very relaxing!
Coolerino! Not sure who did the amazing light shows for San Diego concerts in 60s. Definitely this sort of thing. Mesmerizing, liquid organic shapes and colors. Thank you for posting this.
I have always loved this creative interactive art and I am going to pursue doing it myself.
Disturbingly good, a dream to be able to watch this footage! Thanks!
Should add 60's music to this!!!! Sound AND Vision!!!!

I first saw this style lightshow at the UMC CU Boulder in 1969. Sugarloaf was the band.
@meltingworld2010 I spun for a rave in alaska and told the promoter to scrap the disco lights and get me an OHP and plates and oil. the oil goes in between. It was way coool for sure.
unfairly awesome - the Secret Life of Salad Dressing
@maureennet2 Thank you! That was very informative. Tell me, is the overhead projector essential or is that the most conveniant method? Reason I'm asking is that I would probably keep the light base, but replace the lense with a camera.
Hi Spaced Out, can we use this as a background for a projector in our film, (questionmark) Thanks.
Grateful Dead - 1968 - Anthem Of The Sun
fits perfectly anytime
I would love to use this video for a non-profit production of Hair that I am doing. Can it be licensed?
I love you. Thanks for reminding me why!

@eltotoX Try "East-West" by the Butterfield Blues Band
watching this stoned as fuck, on an acid comedown while listening to the full seventeen minutes of in a gadda da vida ☮️☮️☮️✌️💖
Cool. Beyond. Words.
Can I use this for my band? I'll give you credits for the visuals when we perform. In Washington State.
Fuck something this good I'd buy their services.
Saucerful of Secrets the song seems to sync really good.
Ah shit, you read my mind.
modern digital visualization is strongly influenced by this type of organic flux, the randomness is just more deliberate, although it does over-use fractal manipulation
Light My Fire by The Doors is perfect for this. Both are 7:09
Can anyone recommend a relaxed, trippy song that goes well with this?
How the hell do they get that coloured-smoke effect that first appears at 00:44 ? It's absolutely beautiful!
same question here... its amazing!

Yes, I'd love to make one myself, sorry haven't a clue how
I used to do visuals for DJs years ago. This would have been really cool to have!!
Needs music from the 1960s to make it come to life.
this is incredible.
While I like the pulsing blobs, the slow moving streams would be perfect for the opening segments of “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”😊
Hi Can I use this for a vinyl release? Will credit as I should and send a copy if you would like one?
terry riley and joshua light show - always wondered about that scene in midnight cowboy - now i know ! the wisdom of Jarvis - happy trails space children !
hi can i purchase a copy on DVD for my band as a back drop when playing live ...very cool. Steve
steve tull . Hay Steve you can do it yourself with an overhead projector, veggie oil, curved lab dishes, food coloring and imagination and practice. Happy Trails brother ! 🎶🎶🎶✌
@@dennisstoppa949 Just don't let health and safety catch you ! ;)
Do you know if the The Joshua Light Show - Liquid Loops DVD just shows images like this all the way through and how long is the DVD?
Fantastic! I'm using your video on a website!
Why do i feel like I'm watching a baby form
Very cool! Thanks for posting this.
Are there available screen saver downloads of oil based liquid light shows such as this?
So wait. Did they just aim a camera up at a ceiling during a show in 1969 or something?
can anybody tell me wich kind of colours and oils he used??
and is there an alternative to the overheadprojector
and what did he do to get the effect at
0:23 - 0:43 ???
The name speaks to me
I STOOD BESIDE A GUY DOING LIQUID PROJECTING FOR THE BAND " NEW RIDERS OF THE Purple SAGE "
Are there any decent bands out there still doing it the old way these days?
King gizzard and the lizzard wizzard
This synchronizes very nicely to "Section 43" by Country Joe & The Fish
Did you make this?
Great Stuff! Ah the memories!
I've searched high and low how to recreate this effect, I can't find anything. If anyone knows where I can buy the kit to do this, or show me how to recreate the effect, I'd really love to know.
What is the glycerine used for?
anyone know how to get a full quality version of this?
can i get a copy of this? i have a band that wants to do this on a green screen. who do i talk too?
great experimentation .......
Look for the video by Greg Randall - Disappointed In You. Original tune set to some of this.
Now this is cool.
Well, I don't think there is any question about it. It can only be attributable to human error. This sort of thing has cropped up before, and it has always been due to human error.
@ferrolechem wow you are so right about that. also works pretty well with 'spare chaynge' by jefferson airplane
Could you tell me how can i dye oils? which pigments do you use?
Looks like sumthin' you'd watch while listin' to in-a-gadda-da-vida...
What is that on 0:22-35 its like bass or heart beat
I like this! Can you make another one with music?
Hey can anyone help me out, I'm trying to find a video like this. A pure silent video with colorful things in motion. For example a colorful jellyfish with a mute background, or neon fire burning, or electricity with constant motion.
Thank you :)
Is there a stage light I can buy that can resemble this effect?
lol no. its liquid/light/color/projector/lsd
Can I please use this for a video I am making? I will credit and link to your channel of course! Thank you :)
This is like equal parts psychedelic and lo-fi.
There needs to be an Android visualizer based on these oil graphics
what kind of oils r used
Not sure if I’m drunk or if « Bike » by autechre syncs perfectly with that
This guy put this together to late,
Love it!
this looks really natural
Grande ballroom with the mc5 and this
Or Astronomy Dominé! Any would suffice this beautiful creation!
@projektor4 Thanks!
Groovy baby!
Add your favorite sound track. I saw this shit live at the Fillmore East.
