I just love watching and listening to the way the two of you connect. You are obviously such a great team. Thank you for sharing your travels with us. Greetings from sunny Chester County, Pennsylvania.
Hi Jo Michael, this was a very interesting video lots of different things like wheel paddles it sure looked weedy along the way ,jo not nice to laugh when m fell in Lololol I guess it was funny but worrying at the time ,not much traffic using the canal by the look of it but nice in a way the people at the lock was pleased to see you and watch how a lock works ,,interesting commentary jo as usual you always give us what we want to know ,take care keep safe,John 🌈😇🥓💕
I am wired into the majority of canal boat vlogs at the moment because i am thinking about buying a boat , yours i like the best, your good humour after falling in the canal and your wifes dulcet tones doing the commentary make your vlogs a must follow.
My first swim was at a lock, by myself! Having your head pop up from under water in a lock isn't recommended. It was a shock, falling off that slippery ladder, I missed the boat, thankfully and it was a struggle getting up on the rear button and onto the boat again. So, your jump, feet first, into the reeds was a good introduction to what all of us eventually do. Single handed boaters should be wearing a PFD when cruising, I do now! It is a badge of knowing what we are doing and worn by experienced boaters.
Welcome to the club. I did fall in on trying to wild-moor a hire boat on the river Lot (the canyon river in France I mentioned in comments some vlogs ago) in 2009. I was on the bow, waiting to jump off with a mooring line, and the river bank was muddy and I slipped down in the river. Of course I was wearing an automatic life jacket, so I came up out of the water (waist deep) with a big orange collar, and Very Annoyed, because recharging such a life jacket is a bit expensive.. At least my cell phone was in the cabin and I was unharmed except for pride.
Glad it was only the pride and the wallet that were harmed! My phone’s working again, but my wallet’s much the worse for wear, mainly cause it now stinks! M
Absolutely brilliant Vlog well done 👍 Jo with the quick picture. I did the same many years ago and you have just brought back to me the stink of ??????? It absolutely stinks 😷. Jo you really enjoyed that laugh 😂 after the initial shock. It’s good viewing though
As long as it isn’t you, someone falling in is always funny 😂. It will be much better when more boats are on the move as several vloggers are having problems with weeds.
Quite an adventurous trip, a dip in the canal, being eaten by midges... at least you can call yourself a true narrowboater. A beautiful canal, nice to hear all the history too. Take care you three
Jo - you jolly should have laughed. It's always funny. We still remember when my uncle sat in a cow pat, on a canal expedition/picnic 50 years ago. And that's still funny. Good times. Puts my cleaning the garden pond out this morning into perspective.
I'm glad your swim was without injury. I have had better luck heating wet cell phones in an oven at very low temp (120 F) for several hours. Rice took so long that corrosion and damage occurred. I hope that canal gets more visitors, it looks lovely
Very many years ago I fell in the canal in the middle of Kidderminster on the Staffs and Worcs Canal. My kids (now grown up with their own kids) still find the memory very funny! It's not pleasant! My sympathy is with you, Michael. And with Jo -- I can see that you would panic, given how remote you were.
Ironically, if you had visited Pocklington you could have visited the national collection of water lillies at Burnby Hall. More water weeds! But these are multi-coloured. Your vlogs continue to be enjoyable, informative and (most importantly) entertaining. I don't understand why you haven't been signed up by TV company. You are more entertaing than the Wests who have now retired. There is a vacancy! Look forward to your continued exploration.
Looking at the prop wash there after 8:12 it's really taking a lot of thrust to power through the reeds and weeds. What a beginning to the cruise! So glad Michael was uninjured. Actually, was probably very good luck that George didn't see the event, _"Oh! Dad wants to play in the water! Count me in!"_
Yeah, the weed was pretty thick and it took a fair bit of power to get through it. Funnily enough George sat down on the edge of the pontoon that morning and nearly fell in himself.
Welcome to the fallen into the canal club! I did it at Bulls Bridge Junction and had to be hauled out by a couple of passing young men as I couldn't manage it myself!
Hi guys I have found your trip on the Pocklington extremely interesting and I am in two minds about this canal. On one hand its crying out for full restoration looking on OS Maps aerial view its in water all the way to the end of the navigation so its eminently achievable. One the other hand its so beautiful as it is now, neglected and overgrown and in effect a nature reserve, of course if it is restored and becomes popular it will change and a lot of its charm lost. It could potentially be a much needed financial boost to the area too. Its one of the few canals you can navigate and not encounter another boat which is unique and I bet you are pleased that you did it now before it changes? Thank you and best wishes.
With the natural (tidal) barriers in the way I’ve got a feeling that restoration won’t bring so much traffic that it destroys the charm, at least not for a while, but we are glad we saw it as it is, certainly. M
Small accident seems to turn into a great morale boost. You sometimes seem like two giddy teenagers!, wonderful. Nice footage also of that beautiful landscape and heroic skies.
We walked the towpath yesterday to have a look at this canal. Agree it's beautiful and peaceful....only saw a canoe on the water and a couple of dog walkers near Melbourne. The locks look too short for our 60ft boat. The canal is wide but so invaded by reeds that it's very narrow in lots of places. Lots of weed in the water....needs more visiting boats....however there are no mooring spots along the canal and no visible bank to wild moor against. The only mooring is the 1 visitor mooring in the Melbourne basin.
I used to go on the canals in the 60s. We all fell in the canal at one time or another. I fell in at Llangollen as we were turning the boat round suddenly I found myself under water. I thought what am I doing down here? Of course no one thought of helping me out. They all stood around laughing and one of them was more concerned about not being able to find his camera. He kept shouting "Stay in there. Stay in there. Where's my camera?". Thing is you must shower because there are all sorts of stuff in there. I mean in those days they had pump out toilets straight into the canal.
well mike join the i fell in the canal club, two of my kids have done it and i have to ,but unlike your good self i fell in over my head, and killed the mobile phone in my pocket. Love the sight of you doing the pocklington ,as it fairly local to us ,as i said in a previous note to you guys ,it is a shame about the derwent .any way take care ,we look forward to meeting you one day
Sure glad you weren't injured. My first thought immediately upon reading the title &seeing the cover shot for the video was "I hope he didn't hit his head!"!
#23 on the Silver Propeller- nice job! It looks like a nice canal, and therefore it's a shame it's not better used. I hope others will see this and take a trip.
Another great video, congrats on another silver propeller, you guys should add a map of all the waterways you have travelled at the end of each completed navigation. Cheers Nigel
I used to live on a boat until a few years ago. Samsung phones have been waterproof for a while, my current one is about 4 years old now and has been completely soaked a few times.
Definitely a fun moment in the drink but it could of course have been worse. You said Jo that there was no road nearby should you have needed to get somewhere in an emergency. Have you got the ‘what3words’ app. Extremely useful when you are not sure of your location. Course your phone needs to be working but it’s a great reassuring app. I’m sure you must have it. Great vlog as always. Thanks for making it. Best wishes
Congrats on the silver propeller. I remember on one of the episodes you two where talking about an empty boat emerging from a bridge. Glad your ok Mike with no injuries.
I remember when my husband fell in (back in the late 70s). Before it happened there wasn't a soul in sight. As he fell, about ten gongoozlers appeared out of nowhere! 😳 Congratulations on your 23rd silver propeller.
Well done a good recovery there, looked like nobody had used that canal in a long time bet they will now, I will send some from the Ashby it was as so busy at the weekend. Take care your three no more improptune swims. Cheers Alan x
A very cute and excellent save with "… or notch on the duck-hatch"! You're just rolling effortlessly with the dialogue teamwork . Hee-hee. Thanks for the new episode - I love following along with Google Earth (I'm a nerd); pausing to look around makes a 25-minute video last about 45 minutes for me!
You should paint a Silver Propeller on each side of the boat every time you get one. Then people will ask what they are for and Michael can prattle on and on.
Hi you guys. We were moored up near you in York last weekend and then passed you when you were filming, we waved, via Boroughbridge. We really enjoy your info. X
You know, M, when you found out you had the canal to yourselves in the last video, that didn't mean you had to take that as there opportunity to get your 'fall in' out of the way where no one could see! Luckily J at least captured the aftermath for posterity! :) Congrats on #23 and not getting *too firmly* stuck at the end of the arm! Stay safe and I hope you have a pleasant trip back down the canal (and ice cream is allowable for breakfast in the summer).
Falling in the canal in the middle of nowhere suggests that any rescue could easily be by helicopter and, weirdly, mountain rescue! For accurate location in the out of the way places have you looked at the "what three words" app., it divides the world into small squares and is used by UK emergency services and mountain rescue. Stay safe and dry.
Well deck diaries, was at a place called the river Nene last year, sounds like Monty Python, but the said the water was so clear that they could see giant pike swimming in ten feet of water and there were people swimming, not stinky like were you fell in
Not, laughing, well not out loud, another blade to the silver propeller, oh I do so enjoy your travels, especially to the out flung reaches of the canal empire. Guy
Was surprised you were able to travel that far along the canal. The CRT online Canal Map shows navigation terminating west of Bridge 6, which is west of Melbourne.
Two quick comments: Your "accident" reminded me of something similar when, 50+ years ago, I tried to jump over a fence and ended up impaling my leg on one of the wire spikes on the top of the fence. I was able to lift myself off the fence and limp back home. My mother saw me and gasped, "Phillip!", as the blood continued to flow, "...what did you do to you pants?!?" In my defense, I said, "Mom, I'm bleeding!" As she came closer to better assess the situation, she continued, "You'll heal, your pants won't." I still have the scar. Second, I wonder if anyone else thought of "The African Queen" (1951), Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, especially when the weeds got very thick. -Phil K. Indy, USA
Long ago in the 1950's your parents said don't go swimming in the canal so what did you do?....On a hot Summers day the clear waters of the Pocklington canal always looked so inviting.
I was thinking more of the cow poop from the bank and whatever has been happening anaerobically down there more than what’s come out of the treatment plants... which better be okay, since most of us are drinking some sort of recycled wee these days. M
When I first saw the thumbnail picture, I wondered what on earth had got round your prop that Michael had to go after it from outside the boat! Yes, it is funny, but only afterwards and you're right, there is all sorts of 'nasty', even in canal water. It is kind of sad that after all the effort to preserve the Pocklington, more boats don't use it? Having said that, I guess we are still only just coming out of lockdown and 'getting the boat out' doesn't feature high on the list of 'First things to do?' So, what next? I think you said you had done York, but I wasn't sure if that was by bus or boat, did you then go on to Ripon - which has GOT to be another Silver Propeller, surely?
The Ouse forms a natural barrier to the Pocklington getting lots of traffic, but I think we’re seeing it at is most artificially empty since the restoration began, no doubt it will pick up. And yes, might be Ripon to come! M
hey guys I can relate I have actually fell in the canal and I have a MUG to prove it. lol I was told that a friend only saved me cos I was wearing his Jacket. but was lucky the driver didn;t even see me fall so lucky the other friend did or my legs might have been crushed.
That was a lovely vlog, poor Michael, hope the phone survived. Looked like George had muddy feet, did he try to rescue Michael? Thank you for sharing your journey, well done on the 23 prop location. Take care.
Oh no. I need to get you addicted to 'Ice-cream Mocha Shake' for breakfast;' it's even better with blended in Oreos, and hugely better as a Lavender Mocha Shake, but you have to watch the pepper does not get you. ;-)
I bought two waterproof cases for my phones and fortunately was still using them when I went for my token unscheduled swan dive into a 12ft deep lock... phone survived, ego didn't. I've stopped using them since as clearly I'd never do something so stupid again...
"What 3 words" app can be very useful if you need to contact the emergency services. Multiple head injuries are not good, you don't want to fall in unconscious. Pleased you only got wet.
Rice does nothing, if iPhone 7 or better and in Otter case turn off and ignore in sunlight for a couple of days. Mine survived 2 days in lake water, did boot again and still works. Otherwise without case best suggestion is open phone and expose to sunlight to dry, phone store can do. Pentalobe screws are a bugger.😷
Minimal List Mind telling what phone and which case if any. Minutes and water-resistant seems to be good for minutes only, depending upon depth over 10’. Curious in Maine!
I agree rice does nothing good. Even if it dried the water (it doesn’t) it wouldn’t help. The corrosion in the phone is almost instant. And it’s the minerals in the water that are conducive and cause the problem not the water itself.
It’s a first generation SE, and rice works fine as a desiccant, though not as well as silica gel. I’ve dried out and cleaned out half-million dollar movie cameras, there are LOTS of ways of dealing with inundated electronics assuming they’re shut down as soon as possible. It’s shorts that do the damage, if you’ve avoided shorts then the next problem is water-soluble anything inside the device itself, but those are pretty rare in professionally built electronics with proper PCBs, etc. ... the process we used to use with cameras that had gone into salt water was: immediately turn off and disconnect power, submerge as fast as possible in fresh (ideally distilled) water and agitate. Remove from fresh water and bathe in isopropyl alcohol, agitating to displace water (will form a sheen on top, like oil and water), now place near a large amount of strong fresh desiccant (silica gel, but rice or cat litter can do) and heat to at least the boiling point of the alcohol. Leave until nothing condenses on a cool glass above the camera. We saved LOTS of extremely expensive electronics that were much less water resistant than iPhones that way. M
Exquisitely beautiful Pocklington Canal with slight overtones of the African Queen. Heaven...
Glad you liked it! M

I'm glad you didn't get hurt but it was funny seeing you in the dunk.

As long as it isn’t you, someone falling in is always funny 😂. It will be much better when more boats are on the move as several vloggers are having problems with weeds.
Yeah, it’s a common problem this year!
Exciting! phew, I'll pass on the dips! Love you guys ♡
Nicely remote canal.

You don't expect the CRT map to be up to date do you? Its been open as far as Bielby since 2018
@@MinimalList Really? 🙄 Very poor service by CRT. It's not exactly difficult to update the map and display up-to-date information.
-Phil K. Indy, USA
I love that sympathy from your mother! Glad you did heal though!
Excellent video, thanks! That's a great thumbnail, 100% awesome.
Glad you like it!
Soooo funny made my day sorry 😂😂😂😂😂😂
You just know I've taken a screen shot of you smiling M.😂😂😂
Oh good! M
Happy 23rd!
Thanks :-)
Into each life a little rain must fall. No pun intended.
Such an interesting way to live. I hope more people take advantage of the Pocklington to help keep it open.
I hope so too!
At least you're not in Birmingham!
We quite liked Birmingham! We prefer the Pocklington though!
Michael repeat after Jo, "We are not going to the Emergency Room today"!
Exactly!
The official name for someone who has fallen in the cut from or by a boat is ‘Canal Swimmer’. Welcome to the Canal Swimmers club!
Ahh. A low distinction! Thank you! M
Great picture!!! 🤪. Glad Jo didn’t laugh.... first! 😳
I was actually pretty worried when I first saw him. By the time he was out and I just couldn't help myself, as you saw!
Long ago in the 1950's your parents said don't go swimming in the canal so what did you do?....On a hot Summers day the clear waters of the Pocklington canal always looked so inviting.
I can attest that the smell afterwards as you slowly evaporate makes it rather less inviting. M
@@MinimalList Pocklington sewage works empties into it but apparently, when the water leaves the works it's clean enough to drink..I'm not so sure.
I was thinking more of the cow poop from the bank and whatever has been happening anaerobically down there more than what’s come out of the treatment plants... which better be okay, since most of us are drinking some sort of recycled wee these days. M
@@MinimalList Incidentally there's some good fishing to be had in Pocklington canal if you're into that sort of thing.
The boats in Melbourne Bassin can't be cruising that much, considering the state of the canal leading to and fro? 😊
I think some must have been out. Just not many as far as East Cottingwith!
Having said that, I guess we are still only just coming out of lockdown and 'getting the boat out' doesn't feature high on the list of 'First things to do?'
So, what next? I think you said you had done York, but I wasn't sure if that was by bus or boat, did you then go on to Ripon - which has GOT to be another Silver Propeller, surely?
I’m pretty sure if he had gone in to clear the prop he wouldn’t have done it with clothes on! Lol
Goodness, good job you had borrowed the jacket! Glad it all ended well.
Any landing you can walk away from...
All that green cover makes me think there might be big bass a hiding in them there lillies n reeds.
Probably... luckily it didn’t bite me. M
@@MinimalList well if it would've I hope you would put up a fight n have a fresh dinner.....lmao
I am sure that going ‘swimming’ is an utter ignominy which no boater wishes to endure, however, it did make an interesting video.
Im just surprised it hadn't happened before now.
hahaha you didn't laugh Jo, but my goodness you're laughing now . Seriously though, the getting back out is a nightmare.
😬
Just remember Michael, if you fall and people laugh you know you're ok. If you fall and there's silence, then there's a problem 😎
Good point!
That was a lovely vlog, poor Michael, hope the phone survived. Looked like George had muddy feet, did he try to rescue Michael? Thank you for sharing your journey, well done on the 23 prop location. Take care.
Yes! The phone recovered thank goodness! I swear George could find a muddy puddle in a desert!
😂😂👏👏👏 priceless 🦊
Oh goodness. Falling into as deep lock does not sound like fun at all. At least michael could stand up on the bottom. Glad you’re ok
Strange lack of waterfowl on that canal.
There were swans and ducks, plus herons!
My goodness… hope your shoes and jeans aren’t ruined and can be washed and salvaged 😮
They were fine. Even the phone survived.
"Notch in the bedpost" is the "Silver Propeller" a euphemism for something!? 😆😆😆
🤣
You know the word “sploosh” means something quite different across the pond. Sorry that had to happen to you but you are taking it quite well!
Methinks it only means that because of what it’s always meant, to splash uncontrollably. M
Exactly!
New subcriber glad your ok but was funny
One you realize you’re okay, it can only be funny. M
Definite images of Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn from "The African Queen" came to mind during this video...
Haha
"What 3 words" app can be very useful if you need to contact the emergency services. Multiple head injuries are not good, you don't want to fall in unconscious. Pleased you only got wet.
Yep! We’ve got it. 👍🏻
The rice worked just fine. The phone was up and running in no time!
Minimal List
Mind telling what phone and which case if any.
I'll just add this from someone who deals with water-damaged Iphones on a regular basis ... ua-cam.com/video/UU5T0GOmfvE/v-deo.html
