This was a true shock to the USSR. Kennedy was a bridge that was broken. USSR believed JFK's opponents or the CIA were involved in this assassination. It was a big tragedy for the soviet people because Kennedy did everything to sort out the Caribbean crisis. Khruschev personally respected Kennedy as a patriot of his country and a peacemaker at the same time. The Kennedy family was an example and a source of inspiration for many in the Soviet Union, especially when it came to Jacqueline Kennedy and fashion. What a loss.

Kruschev seemingly respected Kennedy to a reasonable extent.

For as obstinate and crude as Khrushchev could be, there was no denying that he was preferable to the hawkish, extreme elements in the Soviet military and political scene at the time... and the same was true, from Khrushchev's perspective, of Kennedy.
In fact, when the KGB finalized its investigation (which it undertook with extreme urgency) it concluded that it _must_ have been white, reactionary elements within the American government; killing a young 'reformist' in order to stabilize their position. (Because killing/exiling young, ambitious officers before they became a problem was not unheard of in the Romanov days. Or in Japan, for that matter.)
The irony of the two Cold Warriors blaming each other... oh, to be a fly on the walls of both rooms as they go about forming their suspicions!

We'll never know just how great Oswald's ties to the Soviets truly were, but the fact that Kennedy's assassination caused such a panic among the USSR leadership certainly shows how worried they were about it.

@@thunderbird1921 It can actually be argued that most 20th century Socialist countries were actually very deferential to the United States and thought the US would be an ally because of how it celebrates it's revolution. Vietnam, for example, actually modeled it's original constitution on the US constitution before being attacked by the United States. Cuba also initially thought the US would be for their revolution as well.

@@noheroespublishing1907 Vietnam is debatable, but Cuba was viewed as a Soviet launch pad for close range attacks on the United States. The Communist Bloc was severely tarnished in image after the Berlin Blockade and the Korean War, and it hurt every country in it. Those acts of blatant aggression by the Soviets and North Koreans (and to an extent, the Chinese) made the U.S. suspicious of nearly all Marxist nations for many years. I won't defend all of America's actions, but it does help to understand that angle. If Stalin had died in 1946 instead of '53, there's a chance international relations are significantly different. In the name of spreading the Communist ideology, he endorsed brute force as foreign policy.
