I won this album at a fairground back in 1982, as I was only 10 years old at the time I'd never heard of it or the film before. But when I first played it I never stopped and nearly 40 years later it's still one of my all-time favourites.
I was 13 years old when, going to a cinema on my own for the first time, I watched "Xanadu". This lovely music is still very close to me today as I'm already 55!
Another icon of my youth has passed. ONJ was beautiful in appearance and in spirit. I still remember sitting in the theatre wishing I was the one holding her.
What a massively underrated album. It had the misfortune of being released at the exact moment that Post Punk and New Wave were taking over the music industry. This is probably the last great disco album.
Thank you, ONJ, the world was a little bit lovelier when you were here. You've left us so many songs to treasure... The Xanadu soundtrack was THE FIRST real actual album I ever bought with my own money. (And i still have it) This is probably in my top 3 soundtracks ever.
Just watched this film for the first time, on the BBC. Interesting...but at the very least a superb soundtrack, of which this might be my favourite track.
Loved Olivia Newton John, and all the actors of this film. Such a loss, Loved her in Grease as well, they don't make em like they used to Xanadu, A little corny but it was supposed to be. ELO is great! Songs bring me back to a time in my Youth that was innocent. Gene Kelly was great and her costar Michael Beck, loved the Warriors too!!! God rest your soul Olivia, definitely one of my muses!
I saw this movie back in the 80's when I was just a kid, she was my first crush. And the movie was just magical. I just recently watched it again and it was just as special.
XANADÚ ERA LA MEJOR CANCIÓN DE LOS MEJORES ÉPOCA DE LOS QUE YO NO ME OLVIDABA NUNCA SIEMPRE PONÍA EN NA NOCHE Y TAMBIÉN LOS SÁBADOS Y DOMINGOS CUANDO ME Y VA A DORMIR
It took many years for this film to 'come out of the roller-disco-Santa-Monica-Venice Beach-Robert Abel and Associates airbrushed 'candy-apple' pre-post-Modern late-70s neo-deco closet' as it were and slowly accrue the capital to become sometimes a minor, sometimes a major cult classic. If I recall correctly it had a lot a riding on it: it was presumed to be a 'legitimate' roller-disco film (unlike the cheap ass 'Roller Boogie' and 'Skatetown, U.S.A.'), part 'Grease', part, 'Saturday Night Fever' and intended to elevate several things at once: the roller disco genre; ONJ as a bankable solo movie star (not reliant on Travolta); Michael Beck (whose claim to fame at that point was another cult hit, 'The Warriors'); the already ascendent ELO; that idiosyncratic mix of pastels, neon, deco revival, and Laura Ashleyesque dresses that was to burn brightly but shortly until about 1982, the rising L.A. 'new wave' scene (thus 'The Tubes') and, conversely, the quintessential 70s revivalist fascination with Hollywood's 'Golden Age' (hence Gene Kelly), but, despite the runaway success of the soundtrack album and several singles ('Magic' was in the top ten for something like thirteen weeks and at number one for several) it never seemed to coalesce into anything. As a very preceptive friend who also grew up at the time remarked - at once droll and melancholy - 'She was supposed to be this muse from another world sent to inspire artists but all she could really do was roller skate.' This was no mere dismissal, but a 'bon mot' meant to suggest that in the good intentioned glowing froth of this film subconsciously lay the sense that the freewheeling days were over...there was a reactionary storm on the horizon, a hard edged aesthetic, both political and decorative, that would soon sweep over many of the 'live and let live' hedonistic intentions of the 70s. Or maybe, yet again, I see too much psycho-sociological mass in everything and it is simply better put it this way: "It was supposed to be Universal's big summer blockbuster but all it could really do was fall over backwards when 'The Empire Strikes Back' entered the room." For more of Robert Abel's signature special effects, a.k.a. 'The Candy Apple Look', check out the full length video for The Jackson's "Can You Feel It?", also from 1980.
I saw it at age 12 in a movie theater in Venezuela (it was a beautiful country in 1980). I was visiting my cousins. I couldn't hear the English dialogue because it was subtitled in Spanish and all the kids in the theater (who didn't understand English) were talking up a storm and throwing popcorn at one another. And that is my Xanadu memory.
I used to listen to this on my MP3 before bed, and let me tell you this hits different when youre tired and slipping slowly into dreamland. I'm pretty sure I ascended a few times, lol.
"There is a place that exists Where the land of Atlantis Rises up from a clear and calm sea And from the heavens above Descends Olympus And it is there where you bathe with your enemies And the books of your lives Are read And reread And you rejoice in songs of praise There's no heartache or pain No sorrow or loss Those have all been taken away."
I admit it. The Cinema Snob's review of the movie brought me here. In anything it really sounded like Xanadu had a great soundtrack, so I went searching for it.
The movie is solid also but borrows many stylistic ques from 1940s film making. That evidently threw those critic writers for money into their un-educated snot nose.
The songs, the dance numbers and the overall weirdness make it highly watchable, but I can't objectively say it's a great film. I mean, what is it even about? A muse comes to earth to inspire a guy who paints murals of album covers to open a night club?
Come take my hand You should know me I've always been in your mind You know I will be kind I'll be guiding you Building your dream has to start now There's no other road to take You won't make a mistake I'll be guiding you You have to believe we are magic Nothin' can stand in our way You have to believe we are magic Don't let your aim ever stray And if all your hopes survive, destiny will arrive I'll bring all your dreams alive for you I'll bring all your dreams alive for you From where I stand, you are home free The planets align, so rare There's promise in the air
I always loved Olivia from her early days of music. I'm a long hair on girls freak but when she cut her hair for let's get physical video I forgave her because she was so beautiful
I agree, its all crap today. Vintage music has class and a feel of the good old days. Today's crap feels of nothing and no spirit at all. Sad person.
"Have to believe
we are magic"
has been painted on our living room wall in purple for 16 years.
Just heard that Olivia passed away. This is the first song that came into my mind. RIP, Olivia!
Another icon of my youth has passed. ONJ was beautiful in appearance and in spirit. I still remember sitting in the theatre wishing I was the one holding her.
There's no justice she should still be with us
Loved this movie!! So underrated!
Xanadu was my introduction to Olivia Newton-John. Beautiful voice matched only by her grace.
Rest in Power Olivia Newton John.
What a massively underrated album. It had the misfortune of being released at the exact moment that Post Punk and New Wave were taking over the music industry. This is probably the last great disco album.
if you are looking for a disco album that is fantastic and is recent, I highly recommend Daft Punk's Random Acces Memories.
This is JUST what I needed!
This is not a disco album. There is no classification what it is, because it doesn't target one style of music.
Dude everything about elo is underrated
WhAT ?? disco album sorry no.. whata re you talking about this sold platinum and double platinum all over the world despite the movie bust
This has been my jam lately. It helps me raise my vibration in the morning. Thank you to whoever posted this, & thank you lovely Xanadu crew 🌈
I Absolutely love this song !
The movie changed my life 😍
"I have to bealive we are magic"😍
Xanadu the best musical ever !!!
I have that line painted on my wall. Life motto.
RIHP ONJ such a sad day today
... Mine doesn't, unfortunately, but maybe seeing it again will do it for the better... maybe the positive vibes will set the Magic in motion.
Yeah, It just beats out The Wizard of Oz. /s
This sweetie is the love of my youth.
Could you believe I just found out after 40 years today this was made by ELO?
Oh, man. Lucky day.
These songs are real magic and beauty!.
One of the best songs of Olivia (for me😁😁😁) Really unforgetable...👏
One beautiful woman with a gorgeous smile and voice
Rest in Peace Olivia. Your voice will go on through the ages....
De las voces más lindas que he escuchado, Olivia Newton‐John. Hermosa hasta el día en que falleció.
Her picture on the back of the album haunted me when I was a kid - she looked like an angel. Too beautiful to be real.
RIP you beautiful Lady 😢😢
Thank you, ONJ, the world was a little bit lovelier when you were here. You've left us so many songs to treasure... The Xanadu soundtrack was THE FIRST real actual album I ever bought with my own money. (And i still have it) This is probably in my top 3 soundtracks ever.
What a voice. She is still gorgeous (and sexy) at 70. I had such a girl crush on her in the 80s. My goodness.
Since I heard her voice and saw her face in the late 70s, my heart has been her willing, blissful captive.
Everything about this, the song, ONJ, ELO, the entire decade was magical.
Beautiful music, beautifully done!!
Just watched this film for the first time, on the BBC. Interesting...but at the very least a superb soundtrack, of which this might be my favourite track.
A magical song song by a magical woman RIP Olivia Newton John 💐🌹

Can't go wrong with ELO and Olivia
uma das melhores trilhas sonoras de todos os tempos: Xanadu. também, Olivia NewtonJohn é uma das melhores cantoras de todas os tempos. linda canção
Quantas saudades dessa época 😢😢😢😢
When time travel becomes a reality the traveler will be listening to this tune .
I miss her already.
so many good childhood memories from these songs, saw this at the Redwood Drive In in Redwood City CA 1980
I saw this movie back in the 80's when I was just a kid, she was my first crush. And the movie was just magical. I just recently watched it again and it was just as special.
"You have to believe we are MAGIC... nothing can stand in our way♥️♥️
Olivia's voice is like the angels
Found the record at a thrift store, a few weeks ago. An absolute delight.

I absolutely love this synopsis! I hope to hear more of your writings elsewhere
As a little girl I enjoyed this movie in the theater and it was one of my fav albums
Same here... Even at 6 years old as I was. I'll never forget it!
I saw it at age 12 in a movie theater in Venezuela (it was a beautiful country in 1980). I was visiting my cousins. Adelantado a su epoca.... amo ❤
As a kid, this was a childhood cherished memory... also, There was a roller skating Gene Kelly... I mean, wow!!
My school is doing this for a musical !! This is the audition song that I’m doing
how did the audition go.. I love this son and the entire album
Do you get cast?! 🤞
My brother had this record when i was 8 years old in 1980, i always would borrow the record to play on my record player. :)
I used to listen to this on my MP3 before bed, and let me tell you this hits different when youre tired and slipping slowly into dreamland. I'm pretty sure I ascended a few times, lol.
ELO and Olivia Newton-John was a team up made from heaven
Oh yes 👍😊
Descansa en Paz Olivia 🙏 Tu voz perdurará por siempre 🙏
This song is beautiful.
RIP Olivia. ❤
"There is a place that exists
Where the land of Atlantis
Rises up from a clear and calm sea
And from the heavens above
Descends Olympus
And it is there where you bathe with your enemies
And the books of your lives
Are read
And reread
And you rejoice in songs of praise
There's no heartache or pain
No sorrow or loss
Those have all been taken away."
Olivia is still the hottest woman I've ever seen and heard. 40 years until now.
R.I.P 💐💔

This song always calms me.
I love that bass
I still have this album💗
me my walkman and ONJ ...will be so so missed :(
I was 5, Stall amazing and such a big part of my life.
Does anyone else feel that the music is 10/10 but the film fell far short of realising the promise of what could have been a 10/10 as well?
The songs, the dance numbers and the overall weirdness make it highly watchable, but I can't objectively say it's a great film. I mean, what is it even about? A muse comes to earth to inspire a guy who paints murals of album covers to open a night club?
Why isn’t the song MAGIC on Spotify or Apple Music? You can only find a recent live version.
happy Xanaversary 8 8 2019 39 yrs...Xanaduuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!
Several Top 40 songs, including #1 Magic 😁💯✨
The voice & melody I wished to hear in my cradle… but only could here it for the first time when the movie was released and I was 10 🧘🏻♂️❤️
R.I.P Olivia Newton John ❤
No 1 in the US and UK charts
Come take my hand
You should know me
I've always been in your mind
You know I will be kind
I'll be guiding you
Building your dream has to start now
There's no other road to take
You won't make a mistake
I'll be guiding you
You have to believe we are magic
Nothin' can stand in our way
You have to believe we are magic
Don't let your aim ever stray
And if all your hopes survive, destiny will arrive
I'll bring all your dreams alive for you
I'll bring all your dreams alive for you
From where I stand, you are home free
The planets align, so rare
There's promise in the air
seems like a lot of people are feeling the xanadu
