I remember herping the hills of central GA during box turtle mating season; if you listened carefully you could hear the mated pairs go tumbling down the hillside in the dry leaves.
Years ago I trained a dog to find box turtles for surveys. Of course, we don't have the number of hots you do there, so you'd need to get it training to avoid venomous snakes. But the dog led me places where box turtles were unheard of, and demonstrated numbers much higher than estimates.

If you ever get a chance you need to see the box turtles in northern Missouri. Bright red heads, and the front of their legs look like the're PAINTED red.
Habitat destruction is having a bad effect on box turtle numbers where i live in Virginia. Ill bet y'all have the same problem in Georgia, especially being so close to Atlanta.
I am jealous in a nice way as the ecosystem in the area of Georgia where you live Noah is very good. In the UK where I live our ecosystem is almost dead, all we have is cat, dog pooh and thousands of pigeons and not much else.
i would guess people collecting for the pet trade and habitat fragmentation are to blame for the loss of ebts which is why i am raising a captive bred population.
Road mortality due to said fragmentation is much more significant than collection. EBT collecting is something parents do with their kids. That level of take is no different in terms of population dynamics than normal predation. You need consistent commercial-level collection to impact a population. That’s just not happening to box turtles-there’s no money in it.
@@chadharrison2042 Thanks for the clarification. I live in MN so we don't have any native terrapene so I don't know the numbers on collection vs all other factors. As with all chelonians, the rate at which they reach sexual maturity and be able to reproduce is also a major factor
In my area in Kentucky they’re really struggling! I blame interstate more than anything else. I used to rescue many off the road each year, and I’d see many hit and killed… apparently in the 70s and 80 it was pure carnage… Now… I haven’t saved a turtle in 3 years, I actually travel much more now than 10 or 20 years ago, so even more rural areas are losing turtles big time! I can proudly say that in about 2006 I was at a beer drinking pot smokin harvest party in rural ky, it was not my kinda folks… so I’m sitting listening to this old goober tell tales, somehow box turtles came up and folks were saying how there are so few… this idiot piped up and was agreeing, he said something to effect of “ I been coming to this party for 15 years and I used to see tons of box turtles on the way.” He then started pretending like he was driving and wildly swerving the wheel, he says “I used to be able to hit 20 or 30 of them on the way down!” He was so proud of himself and was eating up being the center of attention, af least a few of the idiot crew of party goers were laughing at it as he was reenacting it by jerking and saying “POP” then swerving and and jerking, then “POP”, he was laughing and talking about much fun it was and how much he loved that sound… mind you this party was on top of a big hill in very steep and rocky terrain… I heard enough and while he was still imitating the pop sound, I got up, walked about 5 quick steps to him pretending to laugh, and saying “pop” myself to him… I said it 2 or 3 times, by then I was pretty close to him, I stopped, said “that was so funny, I love the pop sound of hitting things… drew back with a huge haymaker and planted it right in his left eye, then leaned into it and shoved him HARD down the hill! He was gone! Rolling down that hill so fast he was literally kicking up dust, I’d say he rolled a good 100 yards or more until he slammed into a big cedar tree that slowed him down, in his limp state that was enough for his to flop down on his belly and stop rolling, he did belly slide for a bit tho. I turned away, apologized to the host, who’s jaw was dropped, apologized to the one person there I was friends with as I excused myself and started walking to the car. She spoke right up and said “sorry? I’m sorry you didn’t do it sooner” and she joined me as in leaving. Remarkably no one there hassled me at all despite their nature and the copious firearm’s that were on the scene, I was later told that guy ended up going to the ER and had some broken bones and head trauma 🤷 I don’t really care, however they also told me his ankle break wouldn’t heal, he was like 55 maybe, and because of that break he became unable to drive back a few years ago. Ironically his nickname was Cadillac. In case it’s not obvious, I absolutely don’t condone violence, yet I have no feeling of guilt towards that interaction, I find it hard to feel some pride when I think back to it.

Very impressive large and shiny freshly- shed kingsnake. The corn was also bright compared to the dull brownish ones you keep finding most of the time. I also wondered why you didn’t show box turtles until now. Thankfully they are in high numbers. You weren’t that keen on catching them, even though they seem rare. If it were a seldom-seen snake you would have secured it for closer inspection. I also locate tortoises by sound.
Excellent video Noah, as always! That fungus at the beginning was very alien looking! You were I. Some beautiful habitat for sure. That copperhead was so well camouflaged it was scary. Good thing you have an awesome eye for that. That big king was gorgeous to say the least. I think that would be one of my favorites that you have found. I loved the iridescence! It was a beast! Another great video! For the sake of discussion, I think the copperhead at around the 04:00 was asleep. I have found that if you are near a pit viper and it neither moves nor tongue flicks, it is probably sleeping. Your opinion?
I just went with my daughter and her 7th grade class yesterday looking for box turtles it was funny when we found the one with the tracker she was mating with a nice young male the class thought it was hilarious 😂
Kids will be kids 😂. When I was in 7th grade, umpteen years ago, my class went to the zoo and our group was looking at the sulcata tortoises and they begin mating LOUDLY in front of us. Good times. Gotta love nature.
These insane Inter-state and HWY concrete ‘no escape’ bunker walls and overdevelopment is cutting off these turtle’s migration routes as you guys already know. (20 yrs later, my wife is semi-use to me moving snakes, frogs and turtles+ out of the road if safe, which 90% of the time it is.) What was already perilous, these no ‘escape’ Interstate bunker walls and HWYS are tragically wiping out WildLife at a tremendous rate. Especially this ‘modified bunker wall’ interstates are an ecological disaster. Any of you GA guys, how far North has anyone seen Cottonmouths in N GA to the east these days? Around I-20 and south? They’re further North- latitude wise to the west. I think they’ve been documented as far north as N metro atL? and even further North in the western part of the state. Like everybody else, I assume they’re ‘moving north also.’ Great channel. You guys handle these reptiles and amphibians professionally and with care. ☀️

I have only seen two Eastern Box Turtles so far this year. Rain has been sparse this spring, maybe that is the reason.
You need to go down to Sparta, Ga. We are absolutely eat up with timber rattlers and rat snakes

When I first noticed him I saw the movement as he adjusted his head to look at me. Oftentimes I do think they’re sleeping, but not this guy.

I'd assume Barred Owls are providing food for young right about now so may be hunting a good deal more
