Really intereating how full-circle this story went. From Howard Ashman and Jodi Benson working on this musical - no involvement with Disney, to Ashman being called to work on The Little Mermaid for Disney and bringing on Benson, to this song being used for a show at the Disneyland Resort. As another famous song-writer associated with Disney will tell you, it really is a Small World after all.
Jodi Benson is my childhood idol and I had the amazing fortune to hear her perform this at a reunion concert of the smile cast... It was my first time hearing it and i ugly cried in a way no one ever should in public. I also worked up the nerve to say hello to her after the show and proceeded to cry even more like an idiot but she was so kind and hugged me and took a picture with me...I know they say it can be disappointing to meet your idols, but not her.
Tara Kulbatski You are so lucky. I envy you. I saw the musical at Broadway in 1986. I live in Tokyo, Japan now, but I worked for the subsidiary branch of Japapanese company in New York City at that time.I do not remember the detail of the musical itself, but this beautiful song have been prolonged at my bottom of the heart for the decades. This is jewel.
i loved how i ronic it is that this was before Alladin was even a concept, and yet they still reference magic carpets, and jodi benson hadn't been cast as Ariel nor Howard Ashman became the lyricist for Little Mermaid.
Last week I had the honor of watching my high school theatre family perform Smile and it was such a blast I could feel the hard work the cast and crew had put into the show and I just loved it ahhhh!
What's really cool about it is that Disney's not the kind of company to include a song that basically says "I'm aware it's fictional, but it makes me happy so I don't care."
I just listened to this for like the second time, and when it got to: "DisneyLand!, magic kingdom!" I started to cry because I have always wanted to go there but I never have.
When we lost Howard Ashman, Disney lost the spark that made their animated films so magical. Ashman and Menken could pull magic outta thin air. Sheer genius, connecting with the audience like we rarely see anymore.
I saw this musical Smile, in 1986, in New York City. I remember only this song, and searched for it for the long time. At last I found this! Thank you for uploading.

+Bruce Moore They not only spell Jodi Benson's name wrong... they offer to remove this copyright-protected material if Howard Ashman (who died in 1991) and/or Marvin Hamlich (who died in 2012) reappear and request that it's taken down. Ashman & Hamlich's heirs own the rights to this work now, not that it's worth so much $$ except for "Disneyland." I know this show because when I was a kid, my summer camp (Stagedoor Manor) staged it often. I'm dating myself, but in the 90s at Stagedoor I saw Michelle Federer star as "Doria" in "Smile" (she sang "Disneyland." A few years later, she was in the original Broadway cast of "Wicked," originating the role of "Nessarose." Her role was much more substantial when I saw Wicked in previews than it was on opening night (in addition to the song "The Wicked Witch of the East," which was left off the cast recording, Nessarose had a solo "I want" song about that was cut.)
Jodi Benson sings this beautifully. Just fantastic. It was great seeing it performance on Live From Lincoln Center's tribute to it's composer, Marvin Hamlisch. Thanks for posting this recorded performance, its a great song and fund to hear from a more mature vocalist.
hey don't forget peter schneider the company manger from little shop of horors such a beautiful song very tear jerking but like Walt Disney himself once said for every laugh there must be a tear RIP mr Howard Ashman it Doesn't matter if you were with Marvin Hamlish or Alan menken you were a great songwriter lyricist and friend and your work and sprit will last forever
More ironic is the song has lyrics by the late Howard Ashman, who was Alan Menken's writing partner for "Little Shop" "Little Mermaid" "Beauty and the Beast" and "Aladdin".

This song hits different in quarantine
It does. It makes me want to go there after COVID-19 is over when we get the vaccines.
Lol right???
Her vibrato is so bubbly! So many parts of this song sound so Ariel, Jodi is fantastic here :)

It's done with mirrors, the magic there
Each little birds full of springs, you press a button it sings

They've had the mountain refaced it's only plywood and paste

The catch is that Magic Kingdom is in Walt Disney World and not Disneyland. Hahahaha, I love Jodi Benson so much.
actually, the original nickname for Disneyland was Walt's Magic Kingdom -- at least, until WDW was a thing!
I'm so sad that this song isnt on apple music😢
today this song has officially become sadder with the death of its composer R.I.P MARVIN HAMLISCH and HOWARD ASHMAN
Disneyland's 60th anniversary brought me here
This song will be my audition piece for Disney. I belong there.
