He wasn’t talking about suicide. He meant that a bullet from someone in the posse “might find him”, which is, of course, what did happen.

This has always been my favorite country music song. I grew up in 70's listening to Zeppelin and Sabbath etc. But in these days music was universal. We listened to most styles. But I always loved the story and catchiness of this song

Marty Robbins could definitely tell a story and this song is no exception. There are numerous songs about cowboys falling in love with Mexican girls one of my favorites being My Maria by Brooks and Dunn. As far as men killing other suitors over the love of a beautiful woman, well that's as old as the hills. Love and respect, brother, hog fam Canada 🇨🇦

That is the genius of Marty Robbins. The storytelling is so great, you don't need a music video. You can see it in your mind and feel it in your heart. So beautiful!

Marty Robbins made a country music fan of me about 1966. I was a kid too sick to go to school and not feeling well enough to get up, go to the living room and watch TV. The weather was bad and my clock radio only could get a country station, As I listened that day, they played a song called The Girl With Gardenias in Her Hair. I discovered Marty Robbins through that song. I had to keep listening to that station if I wanted to hear more from him. And I did.

He is singing about the time in the OLD WEST, back in the 1800s, when people were still riding horses and horse and wagons, buggies, etc. He is not talking about the 1960s. It's just a story song that takes place in the Old West. This sort of thing went on then. He wouldn't get away with the murder, if he was caught, that's why he stole a horse and ran off. They didn't have "police" in the Old West, it was a Sheriff, or Marshall and if they were trying to find someone a "posse" would go with the Sheriff/Marshall. A "posse" was a group of men chosen by the Sheriff to accompany him on the search to bring the murderer or robber in.

He wasn't guilty of murder because it was in self defense, but he stole a horse and in those days, it was a hanging offense.

Big Iron is another great gunslinger song by Marty. I swear he sets the scene so well in his lyrics that you can see it in your mind like a movie. And consider this, If those high noon quickdraw challenges weren't real, why are there so many stories about them. I would argue that they did happen. They probably weren't as frequent in real life as they are in movies or video games. But I guarantee they did happen. The legend didn't come from nowhere.

They aren't called gunfighter ballads for nothing.😊❤ listen to Big Iron On His Hip it's another one. My generation watched so many Westerns, we knew it wasnt real. So these songs weren't taken so serious. Marty could tell a story like no one else. Like watching a movie in your mind.

Shon, the version you are playing here was made in 1965, apparently for a TV appearance. Marty's original version was made in 1959. It was a monster hit & became Marty's signature song. You need to find that one. Meantime, if you want to hear other great songs by Marty, try "Big Iron" about a ranger searching for an outlaw to bring back dead or alive. Or try "The Master's Call" about a cattle rustler facing death in a stampede. Other great songs: "Devil Woman", "Ballad of the Alamo" and "Tonight Carmen". Marty was a master story teller and had one of the best singing voices in musical history. He never disappoints.

"El Paso" was recorded in 1959. Marty Robbins passed away in 1982 at the age of 57. Before this song was recorded, most songs were a little over 2 minutes. El Paso changed all of that. RIP Marty. Back then there wasn't a racial connotation connected to everything. This was just a song about a cowboy loving a girl from the cantina....end of story. Back then, we appreciated the song for what it was....a great story.

Some interesting things about the story:
Faleena was paid to dance and flirt with the patrons, so he should have known what he was signing up for when dating Faleena.
Also, when I first heard this song, I thought he was just a creepy dude who didn't talk to her before trying to scare off someone who actually made a move, but in Faleena (the song) it does confirm that they were seeing one another (for a few weeks), though Faleena's nature was to flirt, and he was constantly jealous, even though she very much did love him (which you'll find if you listen to her song).
Another thing, he wasn't hunted for the killing. Within the law, it was his right to have shot the other man, because even though he had challenged the other guy, the other guy drew first, so if he had just stayed put instead of running, he would have been fine. But then he panicked, and stole a horse, and *that* was what got him in trouble. Horse thievery is no joke, especially back then.
Definitely recommend the rest of the trilogy. It's one of my favorites of all time.

This song was a hit. IDK about controversial…I mean, it came out in ‘59, I think. But the fifties did accept Lucy and Desi…they were incredibly popular. And there were stories in many ‘40s and ‘50s musicals and movies where a white woman fell in love with a Hispanic man…just look at Esther Williams…”Baby, It’s Cold Outside” this song was a hit and the musical was a hit, and it was Esther and Ricardo Montalban playing the leads and falling in love…

Marty Robbins sings country music and he also sang western ballads & songs which is a sub-genre of country music. Western music is a pretty distinct genre that has its roots in cowboy songs and ballads of the frontier era of the 19 century. It definitely has a distinct sound and style of its own. I wonder if you'd be interested in listening to something a bit different "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - The Danish National Symphony Orchestra (Live)" if you've ever watched western movies then you'll probably recognize this tune. I thought I'd suggest something that sticks to the same "Theme" of country music... except this is a soundtrack to a western movie😏👍🎶

If you like westerns, watch the 1993 movie "Tombstone". All the things in it that happened in public were pulled from newspapers; what happened in private was pulled from memoirs of the people involved. They went to extreme efforts; the man playing "doc Holiday" actually went to a vocal coach to learn how to talk like a southern aristocrat, they went to museums to get clothing designs. And those old times are closer than you think- the hero of the story died when my farther was 12. (Of course, I'm an old fart, lol)

Things were racist for sure...however surprisingly it seems that a man adoring and/or falling in love with a woman of different race was romanticized.. and not frowned on. That's my take :) That may not have been the sentiment in mainstream society but it seems that in music it was!... I was born in 62..so I don't know that much about it. Another (sort of) example is The Girl from Ipanema that was a worldwide hit in the 1960s and won a Grammy for Record of the Year in 1965. It is believed to be the second most recorded pop song in history after Yesterday by the Beatles. It's an awesome song!! Thanks so much for another fantastic reaction!!! ;-)

Shon, this is a third rate bad video you are watching of this song. This version is not like his original song it is slow and boring . I hope you will find another version of this song such as the one where he is standing up holding a guitar. Or his recording radio version because he is singing this very slow and dragging I guess for his TV to make it different. I hope you will re-review the recorded version of this song. It really is a wonderful song.

No offense, but you quickly moving your hands up like that is not that great a measure of your speed. A gunfighter had to pull a gun from the holster on the hips, point it and fire accurately at the other guy with intent to kill all in enough time to do all of that before the other guy does it to you. In the song he managed to do all that in "less then a heart beat". That indicates he is extraordinarily skilled and used to such fights. So, no offense my friend, but I think you would need to practice a lot more and become FAR less respectful of human life then you seem to be now.

    • @caseyb4425
      @caseyb4425 7 місяців тому

I wondered about his speed too. Several expert gun handlers have been asked who they believed were the fastest draws in the Old West movies and they unanimously agreed that it was Dean Martin, then John Wayne. My favorite movie, Rio Bravo, shows how fast Dino really was (maybe that's why Wayne's character only carried a rifle lol).

The song wasnt controversial. Get it out of your head that America is racist. America ended slavery (a global practice), the first to do so after Britain. The US is the most diverse country on the Earth.
