    This was my first Hornby train. I got mine second hand at a model railway show about 15 years ago and I'm so grateful for this video. It was so helpful for making the train run well again.

    Despite its issues I never cease to be amazed that Fourtyfive years after it's been made a mainly plastic toy can be disassembled and returned to excellent running order. I wonder when they designed the Ringfield motor, they ever considered that someone like you would come along and show the world what a good idea it was 😁 ( another top job by the way 💫🥳)

    Hornby's R069/070 (253 001 W43 002 and W43 003) were the original release in 1979. R332 (253 005 43 010 and 43 011) appear in the 1980-83 catalogues. Inspired by your video I just dug mine (R332) out of storage and they are now on the workbench. The power car needs a new spade connector and a full service is now under way. I've added 30g of self adhesive steel weights to improve traction. Black cat technology do a simple to fit directional lighting kit which looks better than the bulb fitted. The coach lighting kit appears in the '79 catalogue as R449. I sold off my original short Mk3 coaches when Hornby brought out the scale length versions so the HST 'heritage pair' will have to run with the full length set. Shouldn't be a problem once their OOBill life extension maintenance is complete. Many thanks for the video.

    Great model, the intercity. I get the limited time thing. It is summer, after all, and I know my layout gets a break over the warmer months. As long as you’re taking something to bits, whether it’s yours or your viewer’s, I’ll be watching! Keep up the great content, but enjoy the summer as well.

    What a difference before and after. The original Rovex Princess Elizabeth locomotive from 1950 (before Triang took them over) had plunger pickups not unlike the ones on the coaches. They were a terrible idea back then and it looks like nothing has changed :-) Looking forward to seeing your solution. 😊👍

    Great video! Like you, I wanted a 125 set from Hornby back in the day but didn't get one as my parents convinced me that a steam engine model would be better. Roll-on 45 years later, and I now have one! Bought as a non-runner off Ebay, when it arrived it behaved very much like yours - slow! Anyway, after a good strip-down, clean and service + new traction tyres, it now runs superbly. I've even upgraded the lights in both the power and dummy cars to LED ones that are directional - so white forwards with the trailing car showing red. It really makes an already excellent model better!

    Yep came in a set when first came out in 77 £19.95 . Got mine at Argyll Models Glasgow for Christmas , which was just as well as when it broke down on Boxing Day it went straight back for replacement! Think your spot on on taking these plunger pickups off , they just create drag .

    Thanks for the video, I have the same set and it needs a good service as it is currently running like yours at the start of the video. You will find the dummy car does indeed have a weight the same as the power car and I also have taken mine out and and added it to the power car

    • @PeterJewell2
      @PeterJewell2 3 роки тому

      The drag from the dummy car is because it has the same axles, etc, as the power car, so needs cleaning and oiling the same. All rolling stock needs a certain amount of weight to reduce the risk of bouncing off uneven track and at points. I would leave the weight in the dummy for that reason.
      More important is to ensure the rolling resistance is minimised. Those Mk 3s will have 'Silver Seal' wheels, which may have been the bee's knees in their day, but are actually rather rubbish -- plastic pinpoint axles running in plastic dry bearings is not a recipe for sweet running! Replacement metal wheels and axles, graphite in the axle boxes, both will help significantly.

    Hi Bill, I know the lights are a bit of a novelty. But I would just remove the pick ups and put the parts away some where safe, So if you wanted to restore the coach back to original condition you could. I had a couple of those coaches back in the day and even my trust Class37 had problems pulling them.

    The motor in my HST over heated when a highly worn brush ceased it up shortly after getting it. I could only ever get it to work as good as yours started so ended up doing a CD motor conversion. I don’t like those Hornby motors, I have two tender drives going the same way even with new brushes, springs and full clean up. I have found the Lima ones much more reliable.

    Great video, an edge of the seat moment after the motor service. I bought a 125 of similar vintage, went through the service stage, still slow running. Good service there bill it looked great with the light up coaches just a couple of corrections this isn’t a class 253, it is a class 43 HST, 253 is the set number for example 253001 would have been the 1st full set HST consisting of 2 power cars, 2 first class coaches, one buffet coach and then 3 standard class coaches and then the TGS (Trailer Guard Second) coach. 253 designates that it is western region HST as there was also 254 which was used for eastern and Scottish region HSTs, the use of 253 and 254 was dropped as the sets were changed around at times and after that they just became known as class 43s.

    • @oobill
      @oobill  3 роки тому

      Hornby call it the "R069 B.R.Class 253 High Speed Train". For me to call it otherwise would be incorrect regardless of what was classed as what in reality.

    • @davidstrains4910
      @davidstrains4910 3 роки тому

      @@oobill well I’m afraid hornby has got it wrong, if you ask anyone today they will instantly call this a class 43 HST as that is what these have always been known as regardless of what it says, the power cars even have class 43 numbers on the side which is their TOPS number and class designation, for example 43002 which is one of the preserved power cars now was the second power car to be built by British rail, even look at the new ones that are produced now by hornby that are all new the box will say on it class 43.

    Thanks to your video Bill I've got an old boxed Intercity 125 running again on my new layout...but it is only running fairly sluggishly with a high pitched whining sound. Any clues as to what might be causing this? I haven't completely dismantled the motor...not as technically competent as you!! But some contact cleaner and lubrication has certainly helped. Regards.

    • @oobill
      @oobill  Рік тому

      Could be a number of things such as gunked up axles, gears, dirty commutator etc. Also if you have the plunger pickups for the lights on the coaches for the 125 they generate a lot of drag that the motor will struggle with and make the train sluggish. If you're not comfortable upgrading these pickups I'd just remove them and have no coach lighting but better running. If the loco is sluggish and noisy on it's own then there's really nothing for it but a full strip down and rebuild of the motor.

I've even taken the weight out of the dummy car and added it to the power car. The coach and dummy power car seem to move pretty freely on the track. And I've tried another freight wagon with the power car and it still struggles. Any thoughts? Regards

      Check the traction tyres. If they are spinning on the wheels they need replaced. Have you pulled the wheels from the motor bogie to clean out and relube the axles? Gears could be overly worn, magnet cracked, armature failure,..hard to say without examination.

    • @tonygardner9896
      @tonygardner9896 3 роки тому

      The usual reasons for non-running are generally due to poor contacts with the track. So clean your track, pick-ups and wheels. Brushes worn out. Replace brushes. General muck in the mechanisms. (Commutator, wheels, chassis, etc.) Give a good clean out with tweezers, contact cleaner, or IPA and add a little grease or oil in the right places. Let's know if your model comes back to life!

    A little thing about the Hornby 125 coaches. In real life they have 8 windows and are quite long, you will notice that yours only have 7 windows and are about the same length as an ordinary coach. I understand Hornby did this as the overhang from long coaches caused problems on first radius curves. I'm not really sure how Lima, Jouef and later day Hornby ones, which all have the correct length and 8 windows solved that problem.

    • @davidstrains4910
      @davidstrains4910 3 роки тому

      Yes hornby did shorten the mk3 coach so they could get round first radius curves however they didn’t really need to because every version that I have that is the full length be it hornby or Lima does get around first radius curves easily, I think they shortened them to make it look more realistic you can imagine having a full length mk3 coach on those curves would have caused a huge overhang and the middle of the coach would have been so far inwards on the curve so it probably looked ridiculous in hornbys eyes so they just decided to shorten them.
