we played a version of this in school a lot, but half of the time we got floorball sticks and the other times field hockey sticks. Now I know where this perforated ball and weird stick come from! Thanks Ninh!
Hi Hannes. I just wrote to another user that on rainy school days, when we couldn't go outside and play field hockey, we broke out the unihoc sticks and we played 'unihockey' (floorball) instead. Thanks!
Thank you so much, my PE teacher made us learn floorball rules and this helped so much! I wasn't gonna read all the long pages she'd send us. This helped a lot thank you again!
You got here first! Congratulations! And yes, until people requested this video, I'd never heard of it either. I've watched quite a lot of it - it's a pretty good alternative to the standard versions of hockey. And it's a cheap sport to play! Thanks Andrew!
Great video. Found it very helpful and used it to explain this new sport (new to most Canadians) to friends and hoping to put together a team in the next month or so.
This is a sport I've never seen or heard of before watching this video. I have heard of roller hockey, played while wearing in-line skates. Thanks for another outstanding rules video (I can't believe you've made over 80 of these to date. That's a lot of sports.)
Section 603 1) If the opposing team scores during a 2 minute bench penalty that is being measured, the penalty shall terminate, unless the opposing team is outnumbered on the rink or the teams play with equal strength.
Wow, this is another sport I never heard of until this video (my books on sports rules that I own do not include this sport)- but it seems as exciting as ice hockey does. Bravo, Ninh! :D
Yes, this is a relatively new sport - designed in the 70's in Sweden as an off ice training too for ice hockey. I remember playing this as a kid in the 90's - it's a cheap way of getting people into hockey. Thanks bro!
Nice video about Floorball! Here in Switzerland Unihockey (how it is called here) is really popular. It is the teamsport with the third most licensed players (only Volleyball and Soccer have more) and Switzerland is also quiet successfull: 6x Bronze and 1x Silver at the world championship (our worst position was 5th in 1996) as well as Silver at the World Games 2017 and 2x Bronze at the two European championships. Our Women got 1x gold, 2x silver and 4x bronze and were never worse than 4th. Also the clubteams of Red Ants Rychenberg Winterthur, UHC Dietlikon (both women) and SV Wiler Ersigen (men) won the champions cup (a tournament of the best European floorballteams).
Ninh Ly Yes Sweden is the best country in Floorball, followed by Finland, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. Sadly it isn’t that well known outside of the top4 countries... But at least it’s fast growing, so this is hopefully changing soon. I watched some of your other videos too, you make really good videos!
I really appreciate your videos btw! As a guy who loves all kinds of sports and studying to be gym teacher these give me inspiration, and I will definitely be trying out some of these lesser known sports with my students when I graduate and become a gym teacher. Keep up the good work.
Hi Matthew. Yeah, sorry this took a while. Kept running into copyright issues. It seems that the IFF are very protective of their footage. Managed to work around that by using Swedish TV video clips. Thanks bro.
Actually the goalkeeper is allowed to play the ball with his hands as long as he has got any part of the body in the goal area, it could be just a foot. Good vids btw
What I was trying to say is that he can't handle the ball after he has completely left his own goal area. Probably should have used better wording. Thanks.
1:55 stick is above waist in a slap shot style - or am I not seeing that right his stick seems to raise quite high. Also, you cant bat the ball above knee height?
I think there's a degree of flexibility with that rule. If it's way high, they'll call you on it. If it's 50/50 they'll probably give you the benefit of the doubt.
I remember playing this in gym class in the US and it was by far my favorite thing to play. I would love to play pickup games but there are none in my area ☹️
For some random reason floorball is called Bandý in Iceland, so it took me bit of research to find out what was the name of the sport I actually played in Elementary school. IF this sport had been offered as training program with sports club I would have signed up to that without a second thought. I actually fond this sport more fun to play than, handball, football (soccer), basketball. and volleyball.
We played that in gym class back when I was in school. I remember being on a team where I was the most athletic person. Now, when if you are on a team where I am the most athletic, we are in trouble!
Floorball (Innebandy) comes from sweden. It is one of the most played sports here along with football, icehockey and handball. Sweden and finland are dominating the sport internationally. They’re the only ones that have been winning the world cup. Most of the times sweden have won and finland come second but like 3 times finland have won and sweden have been 2nd.
Great video as always! I remember playing this in gym class as a kid. I had no idea it was played professionally. Anyone know where it it is popular/what the big leagues are? As someone who played and loved hockey, but skated like Happy Gilmore, it looks like I missed my calling
I know what you mean! If this was a lot more popular, failed ice hockey players like myself would have a career in something! It is played professionally, mainly in Europe in countries such as Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway and it's quickly catching on in Asia. NHL players are starting to see the benefits of using floorball as an off-ice training tool. Thanks bro!
I would like to see you cover inline/roller hockey. I’ve said this before but there is a lot of little differences that differentiate inline and ice hockey and a lot of people generally just look at your channel now when they want to learn the rules of sport.
I really like this game. It is very fun and interesting, I also like that it is a team game. It is very tiring but besides that it is very fast it is fascinating to play it😊
One of the sport that Ive been longing to play but don't have chance to (since field hockey is more predominant) it is played in my country but kinda niche, so hard to find ppl playing it.
I think if you look around, there might be a club near you. In the meantime, grab a stick and start practising! You never know - if you could start your own club?
Played floorball in my youth, It's like the second most popular sport here in Sweden seen to registed players but has relatively few spectators compared to Hockey, Football and Speedway which is understable. While it's fun to play it's quite boring to watch. it's more or less like hockey without skates and heavy contact so the game is way slower and way softer. Plus very few players has floorball as their fulltime job so the highest level of floorball are semi-professionnal. The main advantage with Floorball is that it's cheap if you're not a goalie. You only need a floorball stick and a ball then you're good to go. It's also common to replace the goalies with tiny goal cages.
I will play this for the first time and I have a question: Why players don't use gloves or shinpads (Like in football or hockey). Players don't get usually hit in hands and shins during a normal game?
Its because you lose so much of control of your stick... Floorball is one of the most precise games and control is everything... Shinpads on the other hand are not needed since the sticks are soo lightweight that hits from them are like slaps. They might give you a pinch, but not much more. Also because of the control, you dont go berserk with the sticks.
Anaboli_O the blades are made of solid plastic though and getting hit my those on your chin hurts like hell, I can also tell you that there is no different about getting hit with the stick because that hurts a lot to. A game I recently played a guy broke his stick against my chin while hitting a slap shot. I’ve never felt a pain like that in my whole life.
Ninh Ly yes! Every four years😁 www.floorball.org/Liitetiedostot/Regulations/2018/Rules%20of%20the%20Game%20Edition%202018%20-%20update%2003.06.2018.pdf

Hey, finally got around to uploading it! Cool. Also, congratulations to Toronto FC on winning MLS Cup 2017! I bet you're enjoying that. As a Portland Timbers fan, I couldn't be happier that the Seattle Sounders FC lost.
I did, sorry it took a while. And thanks, yeah I watched it. Got revenge for last year's final where Seattle just played negative football for 90 minutes and won in extra time. Deserved winners, TFC played well all season!
Yep! I'm more of an Argos fan than a TFC fan, but happy that the city has two champions already. Now we just need the Rock, Jays, Raptors & Leafs to follow suit.
Hi, I have a quick question. I understand that for an outfield player to stop the ball with his hand is a foul, but what if the opponent hits the ball and it hits the the player on the hand? I know in football, the rule is as long as the player didn't intentionally put his hand out to stop the ball, it is not a foul. Does the same rule apply in floorball or is it a foul whether or not there was intention. Sorry, you may have answered the question in the comments below, but I wanted to hear straight from the horses mouth
Not much. I think they have a padded jersey and padded pants and a hockey mask. But that's about it. Nothing as substantial as an ice hockey goalie of course.
As a hockey fan n having played my whole life i really like this game n think i remember seeing it when i traveled to Sweden n Finland as a teen to plsy hockey.. my only isdue is i really think the goalie should get a stick n some sort of gloves ...
I think a stick would actually hinder their ability to do the job. Catching with both hands is essential as a goalie in floorball. Gloves though I agree with.
Aren’t a lot of them wearing gloves in the video? The goalie kit is padded like heck and most wear gloves. The ball seriously stings if you get hit on bare flesh, but it is not a killer. A face guard is mandatory though.
This game is uncommon in my part of Canada, or I should say this specefic game. We have outdoor hockey courts in my city and the rules are fairly similar, we use a diffrent kind of solid orange ball, we use the same hockey sticks used in ice-hockey (which is just called a hockey stick in canada) the nets are the same size as nhl nets, and we can score goals from above the knee. the goal keeper or goalie as it's more commonly called in canada does have a stick.
Yeah, there's lots of variations of ice hockey that's played on streets and indoor courts. Inline hockey and Outdoor hockey are well known variations - but Floorball in Europe is played as a completely different sport and (as you can see) played professionally. It's starting to make its way to Canada - I watched a video on Steve Stamkos using it as an off-ice training tool. Pretty cool.
Mario, I'm not sure what part of Canada you are from but there are several places that have floorball going on, it's still a small sport compared to hockey of course.
Hai. Can i know if i can post this on my faceebook pages so that people from from my country and state can know more about floorball? I will creadit your page.
Miika Konttila Really? Sweden won 2017... but I'm guessing you don't count Women? On the men's side Finland won 2016. On the whole Sweden has never missed a medal... 😊
I'm Dutch and we have got a school tournament of floorball upcoming. We have had selections for our team, but noone has actually played the sport before😂 (our team mainly consist of field-hockey players). I am happy to be in the team, although I bet we are so much worse than any player will be in Scandinavia😆. At least the level is high enough to compete against other schools in the Netherlands fairly. But I have a question, how does floorball work when it's about high balls, catching and kicking as a field player? I play football as my sport, but I like to learn others😁.
Actually derived from ice hockey, used as an off ice training tool to help develop soft hands and stick handling skills. Plus, it's really cheap to play.
I think it’s derived from Bandy and had a lot of influence from Ice Hockey. Look at the stick length (similar to bandy) and goalie (no stick) and original Swedish name Innebandy (indoor/inside bandy)
I agree with more like Bandy, the sticks, the ball, less contract, the goalie without a stick, the net shape. Canadians in larger cities have courts to play drop in games of hockey, with rules similar to floor hocke. a ball is used, light contact pushing with your body. the goalie has a stick and padding and a mask, the net is the same size as an NHL net and we all use ice-hockey sticks. goals are scored the same from any height. I really like the idea of floorball as an organised sport but Prefer ice hockey sticks
yes indeed and its huge. the paintball world cup every year brings over 700 teams from all over the world. Take the time to look up the NXL. its the PRO league of paintball. Nike and Underarmour both have paintball devisions of their respective brands! It's one of the worlds largest growing sports!
@@NinhLyUK 0:45 1:16 1:30 (especially this!) and many other instances where the follow-through showed the blade going above wait height. How are these not fouls???
Bartman I believe you’re talking about freestyle which does look similar to folk style but when you look at the rules there are some big differences. In Greco Roman wrestling you can’t touch anything below the waist.
If no one is standing in front of the player, the rule is slightly flexible. It’s more about safety rather than hard and fast. It is at the discretion of the referee
You weren’t completely correct with the penalties. A 2 min penalty is interupted by a goal so the player must not maintain in the penalty box if a goal is scored by the opponents.
I always loved playing goalie in floor hockey in gym class... then again, goalies have sticks in floor hockey. This still seems like a lot of fun though
Soft tennis is played exactly the same way as normal Tennis, but with a lighter rubber ball and smaller rackets for ease of play and longer rallies. It's more of a training tool for kids, but there's some people who play it competitively.
You can only make contact shoulder-to-shoulder though, which is understandable, considering how little protection (none that is mandatory for the field players, actually, except for glasses if you're under the age of 18) the players have when compared to hockey players. Having played it for a few years though myself, I can tell you it is a decently physical sport
When I played it in school during PE, the goalkeeper had a stick, probably because we were all new to it and no one wants to block the super fast ball with their bare skin. xD
Why is the stick so short though? It’s waist height, where real hockey sticks are longer. Why is that? Must be tough the on the back. Bent over the whole game
It's easier to use a shorter stick when stick handling and passing. Remember, they're not wearing skates, so they're not 4 inches off the ground already!
There are not only 2 and 5 minute penalties, but also 10 minute penalties and ejections. The penalties must be served in full, except for 2 minute penalties, which are cancelled, when the opposing team scores.
Also, one of the most important rules is that you can‘t hit another stick with your stick. And there is also another way to advance the ball, which is kicking the ball, however you can‘t score through kicking and you are not allowed to touch the ball twice in a row with your feet.
Read the screen captions, it does mention the 10 minute penalty. I used the phrase 'you cannot lift the stick of another player'. There are different interpretations of the kick rule, so rather than confuse everyone, I left it out entirely.

Subjectively, I'm Finnish.
Fair enough, I appreciate the honest comment.

Cool ! I loved playing " Floor hockey" as a kid in gym class. This looks real interesting.

Sure does, Quentin
Trying out for the USA floorball national team with only ice hockey experience. Wish me luck.

I'll consider it. But it's mainly ice hockey in dry land.
Just like in ice hockey, a 2 minute penalty will be cancelled by a goal.
Some leagues mandate that penalties must be served in full regardless of the amount of goals scored.
I've never heard of this before. But I guess you're correct
Just checked the IFF rulebook - I was right.
Section 601 2) A penalized player shall be on the penalty bench during the entire penalty.
It's probably different between leagues then, since the swedish floorball federation rulebook says that a 2 minute penalty is cancelled after a goal
Section 603 1) If the opposing team scores during a 2 minute bench penalty that is being measured, the
penalty shall terminate, unless the opposing team is outnumbered on the rink or the teams
play with equal strength.

What are the 2 rectangles around the goalkeeper for? Goalkeeper can't go out? Attackers can't come in?
The attacker can't come into the smaller one, the goalkeeper cannot handle the ball outside the larger one.
Thanks. Will the defenders be able to enter the smaller rectangle?
Not that I'm aware of.
R6ex No players (except the goalie of course) can enter the smaller rectangle if the ball is near. They can run through it if the ball isn’t near.
R6ex no they can not. A free hit from the edge of the larger rectangle will be provided to the opposing team.
Oh boy UA-cam not giving me the notification for this upload
Huh, that's strange?!
Ninh Ly not only that, it’s the first time in MLS history that a team won a domestic treble (domestic cup competition, supporters shield and MLS cup)
Agreed! Drserved treble winners!
And the Argos won the Grey Cup as well, so make it a double!
It's probably ruled as accidental and play continues so long as the person who's hand it hits doesn't take advantage of it (i.e. a deflection).
I think it is up to the referee.
What kind of equipment are the goalie’s wearing
Not much. I think they have a padded jersey and padded pants and a hockey mask. But that's about it.
Nothing as substantial as an ice hockey goalie of course.
Ninh Ly Christ i was at least expecting a chesty but I suppose it is a pretty light ball
Yeah, it's kinda like a wiffle ball except a bit thicker. These guys can make that ball move though!
Aye true borderline unprotected hands aswell was expecting at least football level gloves
Smaller gloves give better grip. Other then that a jockstrap and kneeprotection is very important.
is it like indoor hockey?
Kind of. Floorball is different enough to be classed as a separate sport. It's more like ice hockey without the ice and contact.
Thanks.
Floorball is very popular in Finland and i play it myself. Finland won floorball world championships
It is indeedy, Sweden are equally as good!
Gloves though I agree with.
they can use gloves if they choose to.
Aren’t a lot of them wearing gloves in the video? The goalie kit is padded like heck and most wear gloves. The ball seriously stings if you get hit on bare flesh, but it is not a killer. A face guard is mandatory though.
These seams like a great cross training sport for Hockey (Ice)
Yeah, apparently Patrick Kane does this in his apartment!
@@NinhLyUK Cool
@@NinhLyUK I didn't realize you are living in the GTA. I run a league in Mississauga if you are interesting in trying it out.
Without letting the ball touching the net or crossing the line, if goalkeeper swings his and throws the ball is considered as self goal??
Indoor field hockey?
closer to Summer time Ice Hockey.
More like ice hockey without ice, padding or contact.
Field hockey is played differently.
I'd say the ice-hockey version of futsal.
Field hockey is way different
What Ninh said, but with bandy rules in regard to the goaltender, and full contact.
Basically hockey without skates?
Kind of.
Please do a video on 14.1 pool. It "straight" pool.
I think you asked that before? Not enough demand for it dude.
Hai. Can i know if i can post this on my faceebook pages so that people from from my country and state can know more about floorball? I will creadit your page.
Just post the UA-cam link on your Facebook page and they'll get redirected here.
Very nice game good game very fast game
Yes it's pretty cool once you start watching and playing it.
nice
Thanks! Glad you like this video.

Ver y good explanation
Thanks bro, much appreciated!
The only sport where Sweden truly dominates! 🇸🇪
Yeah, Sweden are the kings at this. Swedish ice hockey is also very good.
Remember finland won sweden last year
Miika Konttila Really? Sweden won 2017... but I'm guessing you don't count Women? On the men's side Finland won 2016. On the whole Sweden has never missed a medal... 😊
Daniel Niklasson Ja! Om man tänker så ja.
You can also touch the ball with your feet, legs or body, as long as you play it with your stick afterwards
Thanks.
I’m Finnish and we play this a lot in school
It's a cool sport to play in school.
I play football as my sport, but I like to learn others😁.
is this game derived from field hockey?
Actually derived from ice hockey, used as an off ice training tool to help develop soft hands and stick handling skills. Plus, it's really cheap to play.
I think it’s derived from Bandy and had a lot of influence from Ice Hockey. Look at the stick length (similar to bandy) and goalie (no stick) and original Swedish name Innebandy (indoor/inside bandy)
It's also more popular in a lot of europe than ice hockey is.
Its called Innebandy. It comes from bandy and ice hockey,
which length of sticks???
Can you please do tournament paintball
There's such a thing?
yes indeed and its huge. the paintball world cup every year brings over 700 teams from all over the world. Take the time to look up the NXL. its the PRO league of paintball. Nike and Underarmour both have paintball devisions of their respective brands! It's one of the worlds largest growing sports!
PS love your videos!
why tf is this vid my homework?
So many high sticks in this video!!! I thought only waist level?
The high sticks only really apply to the ball carrier .
@@NinhLyUK 0:45 1:16 1:30 (especially this!) and many other instances where the follow-through showed the blade going above wait height. How are these not fouls???
The foul is not given when you are shooting the ball, the foul is only given when you receive the ball from a pass above waist level etc
rules of freestyle or greco-roman wrestling
I'm on it!
Ninh Ly cool also if you haven't played floorball I highly recommend it, it's extremely fun and rather inexpensive
Inexpensive, yes definitely! If only this was around our parts when I stopped playing hockey.
Bartman no NCAA is folk style wrestling.
Bartman I believe you’re talking about freestyle which does look similar to folk style but when you look at the rules there are some big differences. In Greco Roman wrestling you can’t touch anything below the waist.
Make a video about floor hockey
ua-cam.com/video/Pph-k9NztqA/v-deo.html
wait if the stick cannot be above knee height then why after shooting some players lift the stick above the knee and doesn’t count as breaking a rule
I think there's an element of freedom in this rule.
If no one is standing in front of the player, the rule is slightly flexible. It’s more about safety rather than hard and fast. It is at the discretion of the referee
Nice 👍 🤩🤩🤩🤩
Thanks, glad you like this video.

Tchuckball?
Probably not Tchoukball dude.
I’ve played street hockey/floor hockey all my life but I’m not a very good skater. Literally how do I play this game for a living
Why don’t they make stick longer? They can therefore control ball at full stride/pace instead of bending over and slowing down.
You weren’t completely correct with the penalties. A 2 min penalty is interupted by a goal so the player must not maintain in the penalty box if a goal is scored by the opponents.
I like this game
Thanks, I appreciate the comments!

thanks
I always loved playing goalie in floor hockey in gym class... then again, goalies have sticks in floor hockey. This still seems like a lot of fun though
It is fun.
I am like ball-hockey more than this, but it cool!
What is soft tennis
Soft tennis is played exactly the same way as normal Tennis, but with a lighter rubber ball and smaller rackets for ease of play and longer rallies. It's more of a training tool for kids, but there's some people who play it competitively.
For some reason I can't handle the ball properly. Like I always lose the ball while running with it
Need more practice!
basically iceless ice hockey
Basically ... yes.
Karlovy Vary 🤍
We called the sticks "Banana sticks" in my primary school
I never realised the balls with holes in them where meant for playing banana hockey with
So this is ITZY's yuna's sport🤔 dang shes hardcore
I think so.
That’s honestly why I watched this XD
Looked this up only cause Pewds talked about how fun it was and I had no idea wtf the sport was like
Cool!
When I played it in school during PE, the goalkeeper had a stick, probably because we were all new to it and no one wants to block the super fast ball with their bare skin. xD
Fair enough - sounds sensible.
If I were to work hard on this sport I would have an advantage because due to my small size I would be able to weave in and out of people's defense!
Was i the one who recommended this or are there other fans too
Quite a few viewers wanted this one to be made.
Ninh Ly im glad the sport is growing
And on a penalty you are not allowed to draw the ball backwards. If you do drag it backwards it counts as a miss👍🏼
Yes.
Rules changed in 2014 so you can lift your stick over the waist as long as nobody risks getting hit
I think they modified that, yes.
And ask field hockey players about their backs :-)
When I started to play it was harder, but you get used to it.
