  • So... I have taken it upon myself to try and help anyone who may be considering watching Gintama decide whether they would like to watch it, or maybe for anyone who's watched a little bit and are unsure of whether they want to watch the rest. I guess you could also consider it a spoiler free review of sorts?
    docs.google.com/document/d/1S...
    And here would be a Google Docs link to an obnoxiously long and detailed episode by episode guide to Gintama for you. Obviously, it's not meant to just be read through all at once, but to be referenced as you go through the anime. I hope it will be of assistance.
    Regardless, thank you for watching! Please like, comment, or subscribe! Gintama fans, share this video with your friends you're trying to get to watch Gintama! And feel free to leave any Gintama related questions you may have in the comments. I would be happy to answer them.

    And please. Understand. The fundamental point of this video is to say there is no single episode in Gintama where it magically "gets good." This is not saying... yes, wait 60 episodes and then it gets good. Gintama is simply a show that builds on itself over time in addition in increasing in quality from an execution standpoint. To be able to understand why people love it so much, yes, you need to watch everything that they've watched. This video is an attempt to bridge that gap so you can understand a bit more about how the show works before you go through with that, but it can only do so much.

    My favourite thing about Gintama is how they can go from a robot dentist visit to the Red Spider Arc, and it doesn't.. It doesn't really.. Jar you. It doesn't make you go 'that doesn't make sense.' It works.

    I just finished ep 13 and I just want to say it really touched me at the end when Gin held the girl and guy and it showed how much of a family they are and how their bond has grown. Gin really does care about the people around him and I appreciate that. He's a good character.💕Also I can hear you talk about Gintama all day. The history part was helpful for me to understand the setting a bit better.🙂

    Its 2019 and I started Gintama months ago and I’m only now getting past episodes 42. I want to thank you for taking time toile this video. Your brilliant and I’m excited for what’s to come. I could tell there was subtle set up of something but it’s slow lol.
    It’s funny you say not to watch it all aggressively. I feel like this was before binge culture was established.

    Gintama is quite unique and does a lot with its characters, it blends comedy, absurdity, points of realism (which would normally be a paradox to absurdity) and action into a mostly episodic show that starts taking a darker transition in its later episodes! Most of the characters have likable traits and the show breaks the fourth wall quite well - my thoughts on Gintama.

    Really enjoy your vid ~ subbed. It's funny when I was in college , I thought anime is only for kids , but it was Gintama drag me into anime world, because of a weird otaku friend force me to watch anime one time, that's why I found Gintama at first place, and it was in 2009 , there was only about like 120 eps at that time , I finish it with only few days, still good memorise, and I would say 86-87 三叶篇 is my faverite arc. And gintama's sound tracks, openning ,ending songs are amazing, it also made me into japanese music. overall it's a really special anime to me I'm glad that you made this video~

    It was a real stroke of luck when I stumbled upon episode 20, I guess, upon a local channel. The episode was dubbed to my tongue and I enjoyed every single bit of it. I watched that episode with my brother and he loved it, too. Since then, the two of us would wait for that show to air everyday. After a while bit, i decided to get serious with this anime- that I will start from episode 1 and see it through. I called my bestfriend over bragging that we'll watch the greatest show in the world... and was embarrassed. I never saw episode 1 before but judging from what I already saw, I expected to be at least entertained. There was a few giggles but the real deal breaker was when I saw my bestfriend yawn (me:DAMN YOU~!)
    I dropped Gintama for two months before picking it up again.
    Now, I am still embarrassed. Shameful of the fact that I judged this show by it's cover. I think I will never see a show that would affect me as much as this anime did. There's just too much... heart.. in this one. The fact that each episode was called a "lesson" was the greatest hint. I love the underlying plot. The ruthless comedy. THE CHARACTERS -OH GOD. Thank you for spreading Gintama love. ♥

      Ooohhh, episode 20's a great one to start on actually. It was one of the first episodes that got me thinking... this might end up becoming one of my favorite anime (as opposed to simply liking it lol). I was correct.
      But yeah... those first two episodes. Like, I understand why they're there and they're not BAD, they just end to be... offputting to a lot of newcomers unless they know what to expect ahead of time. Even the quality jump from episode 2 to episode 3 is noticeable. And from then onward, the only way is up ^^
      No need to be embarrassed, that's what this video's for :D Because I agree with everything you said!

    I agree with everything you said here. You point out the epic moments and the flaws all the same.
    I really really love this anime. And I get heated every time someone disrespects it. Hah.. if only they know what they're missing.
    All Gintama fans would agree with me saying that this anime is a reward itself. I know. I've been in love with this anime for more than five years.
    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA PRAYING FOR MORE BANANAS FOR SORACHI!

    The way I try to describe it is as follows. Gintama is unique and great during the beginning of the series. Stating that it's only average and there's nothing really special about the early episodes is false. The way we meet of the characters is unique in its own right. People heading into the series have to understand first and foremost that Gintama is an episodic comedy/parody series with more or less slap stick comedy and toilet humor. It's not some serious and deep story driven show that a lot make it seem ( I blame most of the fandom for this because they only rep the serious portion of the series which give newcomers a false sense of what it truly is). The show doesn't get better because it is already good from the start. If you have to wait till the benizakura to see if you'll stick with it, you might as well not bother because there is only so few "serious arcs" in the series, while refreshing to watch after all the comedy episodes that's not what the series is. Gintama is mainly a character driven series with a huge cast of characters, while there is a plot throughout that really isn't the main focus of it. The serious arcs aren't the only parts of the series that are deep and emotional either. A lot of the one episode/chapter stories have deeper meaning to them even though that's not what it might seem like on the service. That is why each chapter /ep is titled as a lesson ( some of the lessons aren't that serious and are just funny and comedic). Another thing is that Gintama isn't meant for people who are just starting out watching anime/ reading manga. There is a heavy amount of references to Japanese pop culture/ history ect. that people need to know a bit in order to enjoy it more because that would make the jokes and references more impactful. I can go on forever but I'll try to just wrap this up. Long story short, Gintama is an amazing series, It's that people should actually know what they are getting into first and foremost. If you want serious story driven ( though it has it) you shouldn't bother because you'll be disappointed. If you want a series with a main focus of amazing characters with funny traits, moral lessons, funny comedy ( though subjective), a wide variety of genres, tons of references, history, a great plot, then this is for you.

    • @UnderthePineTree
      @UnderthePineTree  8 років тому +3

      Long comment haha, awesome! Mind if I respond with an equally long comment? ^^
      Allow me to clarify! What I meant by "average" at the beginning is restricted to the very early episodes, kind of the first 50, more specifically the first 20. And it's even more of an issue of perspective than it is of objective quality or lack thereof. I myself loved Gintama honestly before the fifth episode, partly because I found them quite enjoyable on their own merits, but largely because many people were saying that the early episodes weren't going to be good compared to the rest... and then I saw them and they appeared to be quite good but nothing magnificent, meaning the rest was going to be incredible. However, not everyone thinks this way. In fact, most people I've spoken to take a little while to get into Gintama. To them, it comes across as average. In retrospect, it is incredible. To someone starting, it is not. And I can completely understand that opinion. It's not so much that Gintama isn't good at the start (as I stated, it's not an issue of Gintama "getting good"), it's that for some, even many, people that this hard to see before they, one, know the characters and the jokes, and, two, begin to see the wider story that Sorachi is constructing. It's the difference of how the show APPEARS so someone starting out to what it actually is, both from a comedy perspective and from a plot perspective.
      Also, pointing out Benizakura isn't simply a matter of the beginnings of plot. Roughly around the time of Benizakura, the comedy has begun improve in quality as well. We are beyond the introductory episodes and so everything about the show begins to take off in a better way. Episodes that are only okay appear less frequently, the cast has established itself and you really, really like them, and Sorachi has gotten a better hang of writing the manga and the anime staff has got a better hang of producing the show. I would argue (a few exceptions) that the episodes following Benizakura are superior to the episodes prior to it, in terms of both execution and personal enjoyment. AND THEN on top of that, you get that tiny hook of there being something more to the show. It's just a good benchmark, as by then you've got a feel for all aspects of the show, which I would personally argue are all equally important.
      Even though the non-plot episodes take up considerably more screentime, they are no more significant than the plot. Gintama is both, and the fact that it is both is what makes it so magnificent. It's not just a great comedy, it's not just a great story. It somehow manages to be both at once as the two weave in and out of each other seamlessly, play off of each other, promote the development of the great and hilarious characters, and create the great anime we know and love. I don't think that people looking for serious plot driven stuff will be disappointed, so as long as they are open to the idea of there being far more to the show than that... I say that as someone who usually watches shows for serious plot driven stuff XD
      As for the rest of what you said though, I definitely agree, there is plenty of meaningful stuff that's unconnected to the plot stories, some of the lessons are just fun, it's tough for people with little anime/manga/Japanese cultural knowledge, and that it's all about its characters. That's the fun stuff of the journey, those laughs and those surprise lessons. I just think it may be helpful to people questioning the show to know the wider framework of Gintama (in all its layers) so they're not bummed out by a beginning they personally don't find all that compelling yet and so they can then come to appreciate both the little parts that make up Gintama and Gintama on the whole.

    everyone always talks about the Benizakura arc, and while it's an amazing arc. the arc that really started to get me was the arc where we met Umibozu, or the episode where we were introduced to Gengai, or the episode where Katsura met Ikematsu. These were a lot of the episodes that had kept me going in the early days, because while it was funny, I didn't truly appreciate the comedy until the arc where they got turned into screw drivers

    I've been watching gintama the past 2 weeks, im at episode 151 and ive been arguing with myself whether its worth continuing or not. dont get me wrong, the comedy is good and the parodies are also good but i find it lacking and doesnt really make me want to continue, until now only 3 arcs are good, benizakura, shinsengumi crisis and yoshiwara in flames, which total almost 15 episodes out of the 150. my main reason of watching gintama isnt the comedy but the plot, one of the seasons is ranked 3 in MAL also 6, 12 and 13, so im saying to myself that it must be good. do i continue it or drop it.

    I remember watching a couple of random episodes with my friend and enjoying it almost ten years ago, but a couple of weeks ago I decided to watch it from the beggining and didn't really like the first three episodes and gave up. There is an anime called Excel Saga that reminds me a lot of Gintama when it comes to the referential humour, but this show is from the 90's. Don't know if you seen it, but I think you would like it. Good thing is that is only 26 episodes.

    • @UnderthePineTree
      @UnderthePineTree  8 років тому +4

      Oh ok! No pressure to keep on watching or anything, but the first two episodes are non-canon, a special for people who were already fans of the manga, so if you do want to stick with the three episode rule for Gintama, you should do 3-5 actually ^^ It's still not the best the show has to offer, but it will give you a little bit better feel for it. Only if you're willing to give it a chance for another two episodes of course!
      That sounds quite interesting, I'll look into it. Thanks for the recommendation!

    Very accurate description of the introductory episodes. They are bland. I remember the days when you just binged the series to catch upto the latest episodes and you caught up with it at the perfect time. It's been a fun experience discussing the series with you since you really know how to break down the important points and interpret them very well.

    • @UnderthePineTree
      @UnderthePineTree  8 років тому

      Dunno if I would say bland, at least not for me lol. I enjoyed many of the intro episodes, but there were definitely a few meh ones but I knew the show would improve over time. It's mostly that I know that so many people DO find the early episodes bland that I wanted to address this, for their sake, let people know that it gets better in terms of execution, that it'll get more appealing as you get more familiar with the characters and the jokes, and that there's more to it than meets the eye.
      Ahhh yes, that was fun time... binging everything post-Yoshiwara especially... and then post-Four Devas, forget it, I'm pretty sure it took me only a week to catch up at that point XD Watching all of FS the day the last episode aired was the best though haha, it was a wild ride, and I'm glad you've enjoyed it as well!

      I also did enjoy them but they lacked any emotion whatsoever. However, 20-30 episodes into the series and it starts to spread the emotions and colors that it normally has and continues the upward spiral until the last episode. But overall, I'll share this video with my friends who have trouble getting into the series. I did write a review on it as well on MAL but not many people really see it there so this video is a great way to get someone into the series :)

    I started watching Gintama about two months ago.
    Gotta say, it has high highs and low lows. Some episodes make me laugh all day, others make me wish I could skip the episode. Although the later are a lower count. Overall, a solid 8/10 for me so far (181 episodes in)
    I've watched the preview for the four Divas Arc in Benizakura Movie Special. And I gotta say that arc looks amazing.
    Can't wait to get started with Gintama 2011, + that 16:9 ratio finally.

      That's fair! I'm personally of the opinion that following Yoshiwara in Flames, there really aren't any of the meh episodes anymore, mayyybe one or two out of the 150+ that follow it. So I think that at 181, you're completely in the clear. Popularity Poll is next haha! And, really, it only goes up. Yesss, 16:9 at last, it is a welcome change!
      Yeahhhh, Four Devas is a great, great arc. Though the serious arcs that follow it are (imo) even better!

      I've seen all different opinions on this matter honestly. For me, I really enjoyed it from a few episodes in. For a while, I had lingering doubts in my mind but I was enjoying it enough for the most part. But I do know of plenty of people who didn't like it all that much at the start and so I guess you could say I'm trying to temper expectations in case someone who watches this is one of those peop;e who doesn't like it all that much at the start. If they start off with high expectations, there's a chance of disappointment. If they start of with okay expectations, they're more likely to be pleasantly surprised.

      @@UnderthePineTree i highly agree. When i first watched Gintama my expectation went pretty high since i watch videos on why i should watch it. I was expecting a lot of things to happen and i really expected it to be at least to be one of my favorite animies since i"m into multi-genre anime. It pretty much has the ideal genres that im really into: drama, comedy, parody,samurai, alien, and many more.I also like the fact that the anime transitions from comedy to drama. Yes it had funny, and emotional moments it had good humour and had some weird moments(but for some reason i didnt really laugh to the point where tears starts to fall upon my eyes that i cant breathe at all i just laughed) . It has admirable characters, great character development , and has a slow but good buildup. The way people described Gintama felt like it was something that i would really like. However for some reason, there are just at times where i get bored of gintama then suddenly it gets good and then it gets boring again, and the cycle repeats as the story flows throughout the series. Which made me pretty sad and jealous of other people since i cant even enjoy such a great show unlike most people.they can without even trying . It might be because of my mood, my tastes , or my high expectation towards the anime. Maybe next time when i watch something i shoudn't think too highly of it or ill lose the hype. Im alrdy done with 367 episodes and overall it was ok it wasnt good but it was ok i guess although i did find the latest arc a good one. I also liked the shogun assassination arc, jirocho arc, and pretty much most of the serious arcs(but it felt like it wasnt enough to satisfy me)I honestly can't wait for the final season. I would say, i may had gotten bored of the majority of the arcs but as i watched the episode where gintoki and everybody else fights utsuro, thats when i started liking it again and it made me even liked the show even more when the timeskip arc debut and i really hope the final arc won't dissappoint me. Gintama may have a transition of ups and downs, but im kinda sad that the manga has alrdy ended. It felt like it wasn't the time or it felt like it was a bit too early for it to end. Im not trying to hate on gintama ok im just being 100% honest with my review. And whoever likes Gintama then good for you and your are blessed to have such good tastes.

    I started Gintama 23.12.2014 and I'm on episode 78 :D
    I've watched it on and off because there isn't 1 main story, but multiple amazing arcs.
    I love it already I loved it in the beginning and still do, but I don't like episodic shows too much, but Gintama is so good I'm trying to find time for it and finish it somewhere this year.
    I could finish Gintama in 3 weeks if I wanted, but I watch seasonal/reactions/shorter anime and other long anime so I can't find time to watch it since it doesn't hook you in after every episode.
    Anyways really good show most likely will stay as 10/10 even if I won't ever finish it :D

      @UnderthePineTree  8 років тому +2

      Oh you're at the Yagyuu Arc then?! Awesome, such a great arc! Very fun, but also great character development all around. But iirc.. 78 is in the middle of the arc... I can't imagine stopping there lol.
      Oh yeah, definitely take it at your own pace. There's no rush, just enjoy it for what it is right now and be prepared for even more greatness down the road. You're at the start of a really, really great stretch of the show, between the Yagyuu, meeting the Shogun, the Mitsuba arc (beautiful oh my goodness), and lots of other stuff. You're actually about 20 episodes away from an arc in my top 10, possibly top 5 :D
      Feel free to chat anytime as you go through it, it's always fun to talk to people early on in the show, especially if they're enjoying it so much already! It only goes up!

    In resume DONT GET ANY WEIRD HOPES FOR THIS SHOW BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY, IT ENDS UP HOOKING YOU BY THE MOST UNEXPECTED REASON, JUST READ IT CASUALLY UNTIL YOU FIND INMERSED ON IT AND WANT TO SEE MORE.
    Now to explaing it :
    I think that the very idea of searching for information about this show is something that doesnt work that well for it, as that is the way people avoid wasting time in the crappy shows of the huge quantity of anime that comes out thanks to the seasonal format of delivering anime. The way this show is presented doesnt fit for that, and people try to convince themselves that this series that impressed them from an amv or the great review that your favorite youtuber/blogger has made about it, and the later dissapointment you get when you dont relate those reviews to the first episodes is the holder that keeps people for taking the very good vibe and jokes that the episodes from the beggining to the benizakura arc spam of chapters have...
    The perfect mindset for my to begin this show is just reading the synopsis and decide yourself how to aproach it, if you want recomendation on that, given the synopsis and the hard schedules that a lot of you may have just watch it in your true free time. when you ended watching your plans for the day and done all your duties is the best time to see the comedic slice of life anime that will make you lift your head in good mode for the day, at that pace you will start gradually getting interested on it and you will use more time to watch it
    Thats how i got introduced to gintama: trying to search for an anime of samurais after getting excited about those ideas for some reasons i dont remember, i found in the most popular manga of the day the picture of this weird white haired guy in a bad-worn kimono with a wood stick and a motorcicle, the art wasnt atractive and for that sole reason i wouldnt have read it but i used to lessen my samurai hype and the episodic adventure that this seemed to be by the synopsis description made me thing that it was the cheapest way.
    SOME EXAMPLES of episodes that were good in the begining of the show:
    kaguras introduction was not bad, the fan episode was a pretty funy episode showing the obsoleteness of that article, the kappa episode were besides the nice way the episode is portrayed we met the sick girl who will later become the base personality for tama, the joke on the predicator that concedes wishes were episodes in which they try to make the characters put a wall of though acting to then show how they truly think is an interesting way, and the rengokugan and umibouzu arc are pretty good...

And it was so bad it was a bout to be canceled, the editors even said that this is one of the few shows or the only that had recover from such a low point, and it was really hard since when Gintama started Death note was the most popular manga, making the situation no better. Is really surprising how Sorachi achieve it, It just make me respect him more. Good recommendation of why to whacht gintama hope more people wacht this amaizibg series.

      Up until this week's manga chapter, it was Gintoki. Now it might be Shouyou. I am just so fascinated by this man. My top ten are all really close though. Shouyou, Gin, Zura, Takasugi, Oboro (also just because of this week's chapter), Sakamoto, Kagura, Nobume, Kondou, Hijikata. Honorable mentions to Shinpachi, Isaburo, and Tsukuyo. Also Zenzou! Ah whatever. I'm fine if he doesn't care for Gintama, he's perfectly entitled to that. Anyone is perfectly entitled to like or dislike a show for whatever reason. It's called having an opinion, and, obviously, those vary from person to person lol. Gintama's not perfect, and if those flaws are too big for someone to overlook by virtue of their individual taste... that's fine! They may prefer other anime... that's fine!
      But this isn't about the fact that he was criticizing Gintama. What he did was take what I said out of context in an utterly mocking fashion, using my content without my consent, completely misrepresenting my views, and so whatever good points he made or may ever make, with regards to Gintama or anything else... I honestly don't care.
      I... sorry for the rant. Even if that's just what he does... it's uncalled for. I know this wasn't the point of your comment and I'm not mad at you at all! Your comment was honestly quite kind! HERE IS SOME ACTUAL CRITICISM FOR YOU.
    So basically in your video your saying that people have to watch 300 eps of pointless episodic shounen jump fan service filler in till gintama gets any good.
    Because apparently it needs 300 episodes of set up before it goes any where.
    Even though from what I have seen there are shows that are just as long or longer than gintama and they do set up in less episodes and get to the actual point. So basically what your pretty much saying is that all of gintama arcs are basically one big set up arc that leads to something of actual story and then ends.
    So I guess you expect most anime fans to have the patience of a wise old monk.
    Which I guess Some people do.
    But if you're like most anime fans then I guess this would find having to watch over 300 episodes of episodic filler to be very taxing.

      Also, thank-you for calling my opinion biased for no reason, insulting me, and showing your ignorance. You couldn't have made this easier.
