    Bartók was my teenage idol. All my pocket money I spent on sheet music and when I first visited New York I went to Boosey&Hawkes to obtain more material. To this day I savour every note of his music I ever heard. Sad and beautiful.

    Mr. Salonen strikes me as 75% Pierce Brosnan and 25% Gary Oldman.

    Maybe he was afraid he wouldn't be able to complete the concerto. "The end" might have been triumphant, rather than sad and despondent. Death has the nasty habit of taking geniuses away bang in the middle of writing their last masterpiece. (Why's it always the last one, though.)
