  • The yearly Apple Watch event just took place, and the internet is abuzz with fanfare for the Apple watch Series 6, but as a mechanical watch fan, I just don't get all the fuss. Change my mind.

I find myself glancing at my watch all the time, but instead of checking my email or reading a text I’m just admiring the beauty of something for a few seconds. I’d rather have moments of extra beauty peppered throughout my day rather than another electronic device to distract me and demand my attention.

haha all your reasons are right on point. Not long ago, I was at work and a co worker noticed my old Seiko and was like "Oh, you're into watches?" and I got a little excited. I thought "Nice! Someone to geek over watches with!" Then they whip out their arm and it's an Apple watch... I was so bummed.

I’m just a year late but I’m a big fan of your content. I loved collecting watches until the Apple Watch came around. It is just so darn functional that I couldn’t wear a regular watch and not know how many calories I was burning in a day or be able to see the next thing on my schedule. To not have an always up to date perpetual calendar, or to know what the weather is going to be like.
Now I’m swinging back the other way and rekindling my love for mechanical watches. I think the only reason I would though, is a fascination with the art and mechanics of the watches, and as a way of cutting the hundreds of digital strings constantly tugging on me throughout the day.

I am 15 and that’s considered young, I have alway loved mechanical watches and I have always love the advancement of modern technology like the iPhone and the Apple Watch. It honestly put me in the middle, on one hand it always used to blow my mind that a watch could keep time thought tiny components and springs that seemingly comes together creating a master peace, but on the other hand I love having a peace of technology on my wrist that can keep me in touch with loved ones without the distractions of my phone having to be on me.

But if fitness holds an important part in your lifestyle, it’s hard to skip smart watches and or gps sport watches like Apple watches and Garmin watches. The most important challenge that I have is how to rotate between my Garmin watch (Fenix 7 and Forerunner 955) and my Casio g shock Rangeman gw9400. Very interesting point on the design obsolescence. On a more superficial level I feel like apple watches also become obsolete in the sense that once a new model comes all the older models become "dated" and are no longer trendy to wear. meanwhile a nice watch looks timeless

I totally agree with you. I don’t think fitness watches of any kind are that accurate anyways. Technology has conglomerated life too much. The time we spend on iPhones, computers, iPads have stagnated true daily living and has misled truthfulness by all the crazy media involved. Yes, it’s informational in many ways and has been helpful with certain important things, but so much time is distracted by these devices we are glued to and depend upon.

My apple watch (series 4) just stopped working after 1year and 11months. Apple service does not repair watches, rather they just replace it at slightly more than half the price of a new one. I had replaced this same watch after a month of use when its screen got shattered after falling from my waist height. Now I pondering whether i should replace it or not. I am starting to have similar thoughts like you. The value degrades so quick compared to an analogue watch. Maybe i should just save up and get a mechanical watch from reputed brand that i could pass on.

I’m an Apple Ecco system SME and work with many Apple staff as part my job. I’ve gone past the stage of fanboi, some of my colleagues have a good laugh as I don’t go rushing out to get the latest Apple tech, mainly because I know I’ll get one free at some point lol..
I have been tempted to get an Apple Watch, been offered one a few times at work but asked for something else more useful instead like an iPad Pro. My main driver are Casio G Shocks, I have several and can normally find one that suites my mood for the day.. I’ve tried wearing bracelet watches but that just scratches the hell out of the clasp, the desk or the MacBook. Not to mention the weight and “tiredness” it can cause.
For watches that three watch collection, I started with an omega seamaster 80s quartz dress watch that was my dad’s. It’s beautiful, loved it from when my dad first got it and was so happy when it passed it on to me. I don’t often get invited to an event that would need me to wear a dress watch so the quartz factor is a bonus.
I’ve recently became the owner of a planet ocean, still amazed by it’s looks and try to wear it as much as possible..
Not sure what I will get for the third yet… tempted for a panda speedmaster racer or something to keep it in the seamaster line..
Anyway; I unfortunately do need to rely on smart features, so on my other wrist is the a miiband, which gives me all the smart features I need, serval days battery life and cheap enough to replace every two years with the latest model without even having to think about it. Best thing is that it’s actually a band, so it doesn’t give the two watch look.. lol
    Thanks for the vid

In general, a watch is so valuable if you don’t carry any other technology around you such as a phone. I mean for the average person with the right sum amount of budget of course, I was on the VERGE of buying an apple watch, just because I was in the ecosystem which is obviously designed to keep you locked into that mindset of having another apple product. The thing is I already have purchased a MacBook air m1 and AirPods pro, but I digress. Now we already have our phones that keep us busy enough, I hope this clears out desirable thoughts of obtaining this tech because if you have a phone that tells time then you obviously should be spending your hard earned money on something else more valuable.

In the book After Steve they talk about how the watch was intended to check your blood sugar and be entirely medical related.. then that ended up being a scam so they had to turn it into a fitness product at the last second. It checks out because they turned a pretty good idea into a vague-ish mini iphone rip off with some neat things.

It is not which one is better, but which one suit your need. As example, I choose to use automatic watch that not accurate (delay 8 seconds per day), have to twist calendar four times a year, able to self-service (nothing to busy with), not shock absorber and looks nice as a vintage piece. 😂

Your most cogent remark was: "[analog watches] are a throwback to the days when you were allowed to be bored!" Yes, I remember those days well, when cutting-edge technology was color tv. I, also, will never own an apple watch. When they came out, my first thought was that these look exactly like the digital watches of the early 1980's, that had a calculator function. What's old is new again, I guess. I wear my Seiko turtle diver at the gym surrounded by everyone else wearing their apple watches (in addition to looking at their cell-phone every two seconds). My only digital watch is an (original 8 lap) Timex ironman, for two reasons. 1. I do think the design is unique and interesting. 2. I run and swim so it is more functional than an analog watch in that regard. I enjoyed this post and your philosophy on watches.

If I want to track my activity I wear the apple watch (and seriously, who would wear a speedmaster on a snowboard day??? the alternative would be no watch at all, in case). How are they not in competition. You have 2 wrists. One of them is for a watch. It's redundant tech. People are literally too lazy to grab their phone and look at it. They are too addicted to their phones to look at them when it's convenient. If you need a watch like this it's more about your toxic relationship with tech and less about it's usefulness

Totally agree. Came back to conventional watch after going through 3 upgrade obsolescence cycles of Apple Watch. AW has all the flaws you mention + it is too slow to display when I read at a glance. Yet I haven’t put the AW away. It’s great for health monitoring and health parameter tracking. I hike, pool and open water swim and it’s ruggedness and mapping functionality are excellent in those environments. It means I can leave my phone in my pocket to see alerts (intrusive as you suggest but less so than pulling out the buzzing iPhone). The elegance of a time piece powered by ambient light or body motion is unapproachable by the AW. So I seem to be transitioning back to conventional but don’t want to switch watches to get into the pool. Obsolescence I address by wearing the penultimate AW that is abandoned by my always up to date wife. For now, the AW is on my right wrist while my real timepiece on my left. I prefer long sleeves anyway so my Schwartzkopf dorkiness isn’t obvious. I use the smallest AW and the most plainly colored band since it’s not there for show. I like to think that most of the attention goes to the real watch on my left wrist: today the Speedy Pro on Omega NATO. I’m open to changing my lifestyle and attitudes away from the need for an AW. Retirement gets me a little closer every day. When and if AW goes solar the charging objection will disappear and AW appeal would increase, the decision made a closer call. So I’m in tension but slowly sliding back towards a real watch alone.

Loved your explanations for everything! This video made me reaffirm my decision to quit using my apple watch series 7. I used it for everything except for checking the time. After a point I even turned off notifications for Instagram and WhatsApp as the constant haptic nudge felt so unnecessary and distracting. I used it in the gym but it was not that helpful, but for running I think it can be quite useful. Now I'm happy to use a casio a168 and looking forward to buying my first mechanical watch soon!

Have to admit the whole Apple phenomena has always been lost on me, so was never going to own an Apple watch. I have no issue with people wearing smart watches. I just prefer mechanical and digital watches. Personally having my smartphone on me or close practically all the time is enough tech interaction

I have a mechanical watch too. And I've been using it for more than 3 years. It got to the point where after a year my weight started to increase, and I had a messy sleep. And I decided to maintain my lifestyle well in the future. I thought about the Apple Watch. It's true that the AW is a technology and not a rugged watch. However, it is a tool. I decided to give it to my mother after 2 weeks of using it because I am very used to mechanical watches. But here it is, apparently I feel that I am very happy using AW. Why? Look, in my messy life right now, this is very useful. So I can know my body condition, heart rate and sleep quality from day to day. Also this makes exercising feel more enjoyable. I think when this video was made the last series that came out was series 6. I'm using series 8, and it really feels really great. But I also won't abandon mechanical watches. I always put it in my bag. When I want to wear it, I will wear it. And if the battery runs out, I will wear a mechanical watch. But now with just 30 minutes of charging you will get a whole day of battery. Yes, that's my view. However, for people who live a healthy life without having to continue exercising or at least do exercise regularly, the Apple Watch will not be useful. Because their lives are fine and exercising is something they will definitely do even without reminders.

The most high tech thing I ever put on my wrist is an atomic G-Shock. Lately though I’ve been doing a Schwarzkopf - SKX007 on the left, Casio W-59 on the right. And the “tech” in that wonky Casio feels juuuust right.

I know I am only 2 years late making my comment but I was wondering, why does it have to be one or the other? Why not wear an Apple Watch at times when you want to just track fitness, run errands etc. etc. and wear the fancy watch on the other days? It could also be changed up for work as well.

Ok, but on your point about The Social Dilemma, why not just disable notifications from social media? I’ve been doing that for ages on my iPhone. Getting a lot of email that doesn’t need your attention? Turn off email push notifications. It’s not really a case of all or nothing IMO - there are ways to cut the noise and get genuine time-sensitive notifications on your wrist.

Yeah...all that, too. The need for frequent charging is the real dealbreaker for me. I’ve got three Apple products that are in constant use, and it is a pain enough to keep them periodically charged. But a watch that needs way more attention for charging...I just don’t want to give it all that much attention. And besides...they’re ugly.

Just coming across your video, for almost my whole life I refused to wear anything other than a mechanical watch, I wouldn’t even think of wearing a soulless quartz watch, recently I went out and bought a Apple Watch ultra 2.
The surprising fact about it is it lets me disconnect from my phone and social media and tech in general, my notification are set to family only and since it has cell service I can leave my house for the first time in a decade without my phone but still remain reachable.
    Here’s how I use it:
    Watch
    Music controller
    Family messages
    Alarm
    Fitness
And lastly, I don’t treat or think of it as a mobile device, it’s a almost indestructible watch and that’s how I treat it, like a g shock that can make calls and pay for things.

I am a Rolex fan but I do have an Apple watch as well. My Apple watch is my daily beater and I don't really care if it is all scratched up. But my Rolexes are meant for happy occasions, and I like to keep them pristine. I loved to steal glances at my Rolexes when I wear any of them. But I can't really bother to look at my Apple watch after the novelty wore off.

Obsolescence - Wearing a Series 3, still going strong, mechanical watches need regular servicing
    Distractions - Set up Focus/Notifications
History - Jony Ive studied classic watch designs and let them inform the Apple Watch
    4&5 aren't arguments in a conventional sense

The most important function of a watch is keeping the time. An Apple Watch will beat out any mechanical and quartz watch in time keeping accuracy, for better or for worse.

The whole area of watches is complicated (no pun intended.)
Problem is When you get into collecting - ie. watch addiction - then eventually it is always about getting the next watch.
I agree that an Apple Watch can only really be justified if you are going to use it as a tool.

the point of an Apple Watch is not really comparable to a mechanical watch as mechanical watches are not really the most efficient or accurate timekeeping device but they are incredible to stare at and an Apple Watch is all about practicality

I have an Apple Watch Series 3 that is in rough condition, but still works perfectly fine for something that came out in 2017. I mean, if Apple makes a product to last for a long time, older people will recommend it to young users, therefore adding more users and revenue for Apple.

If a smartwatch could act as a sat nav, monitor blood sugar levels and take accurate blood pressure readings, I might be tempted. But a watch that just monitors heart rate, takes a number of steps, tells you how many calories you've consumed and gives the time seems like a total waste of money.

while I agree with all your points, i feel like if someone wants or needs to wear a smart watch for health/fitness reasons, the apple watch is the best, from a design standpoint. because unlike most other smart watches, it doesnt try to look like a watch, it just looks like a tiny iphone on a strap. thats why i dont think of traditional watches and the apple watch as competitors. in fact, ive seen a lot of people wearing a mechanical/quartz watch on one wrist and an apple watch on the other.

The word “watch” was a coincidence. They are two different categories of wearable. One is a health tracker that accidentally tells time. One is a jewellery that still tells time. Comparing them never produce anything fruitful. You don’t wear jewellery to hike and you don’t wear heart monitor to a party (unless you have heart issue).
