    Grass Fed Beef: Can you Trust the Label? - Thomas DeLauer… So unfortunately, we can't even go to the store anymore and trust a label. Yep, that's right. So even if something says that its grass fed beef, it's probably not actually grass fed. We're getting to a point right now with food marketing that we really have to be educated and we truly have to understand. So in this video, I want to help you understand the true difference between grass fed beef and grass finished beef, but I also want to help you understand the physiological and the actual difference of the two in your body.
    First off, I want to reference a study that at least points out why true grass fed or grass finished beef is much, much better than the traditional stuff you're going to find at the grocery store. So when it comes down to it, a publication called the Nutrition Journal published a study that took a look at the omega 3 profiles between grass fed or grass finished beef and traditional grain fed. They found that grass fed beef ended up having a 1.5 to 1 ratio of omega 3 to omega 6. They found that grain fed beef contained a 7.65 to 1 ratio of omega 6 to omega 3. That's a huge, huge difference. I'm going to tell you right now, when it comes down to what you're consuming, the higher the omega 6, the worse the meat or the beef or the actual fat is for you. So let's go ahead and talk about the difference between grass finished and grass fed. Just because something says grass fed doesn't mean that it's actually been fed grass. As long as cattle start out on grass, food marketing allows them to say that its grass fed. Even though realistically what's happening is the cattle are started on grass and then moved to a feedlot and fed grains to finish them. If they ever ate a blade of grass in their life, legally, they can call it grass fed.
    The reason they typically feed grain is for obvious reasons. A lot of us here that are watching this video are probably low carb advocates or keto advocates and we know that grains and carbs generally end up causing a lot of weight gain if you're doing them in an uncontrolled fashion. So what do they do? They give these cattle a lot of grains. They give them a lot of corn, they give them a lot of soy, and they put weight on them. It allows them to get more at market. So start them out on grass so you can do the grass fed label, then move them on over to the feedlot and give them a bunch of grains so you can pump the weight on them and then get more dollars for them. That's plain and simple what's happening.
    There's a lot of evidence that points to why we really should be leaning towards true grass finished beef. In fact, a lot of research suggests that there's truly a lot more conjugated linoleic acid, also known as CLA, in true grass finished beef versus grain fed beef. Now if you're getting conjugated linoleic acid from a natural source, it is a huge stimulant of fat loss. Now if you're getting it from a supplement, it's a different ball game because that's a plant source that they've artificially modified, so it doesn't really apply there. I've done videos on CLA in the past and you can check those out.
    Additionally when you're looking at grass finished versus grain fed, you also have a higher level of what's called glutathione and superoxide dismutase. These are two things that kill off free radicals within the body. So in addition to having a plethora of better nutrients and better fat burning possibilities, you're also having a better detoxing process by going with the option that is truly grass finished versus grain fed.

    As a producer of beef which is raised entirely on native rangeland without any hormones , antibiotics, insecticides or wormers, and absolutely no grain feeding, i mostly endorse this video. My reservation in the endorsement is pretty simple. I have far less trust in a corporate scale food distributor than i do in a family scale farmer or rancher.
    I strongly endorse shopping for protein at your local farmers’s market, and cultivating a relationship with your local farmers and ranchers. Visit with the producers, check out their farm or ranch, and support those who are producing the food and environmental quality that you want.
    There is a lot at stake in the decision to support family scale agriculture over the corporatization of our food supply.
    Today there are farmers markets nearly everywhere, and the people selling food there are looking forward to sharing their story with you!
    Support your local farmers and ranchers. Eat healthy, be happy.

      What do they eat in the winter? Our cattle would starve to death without grain and hay in the winter. Of course we all now grain is the product of grass so they are stringing us along.

    • @dennismoroney
      @dennismoroney 3 роки тому

      @@clairdenning9062 we live and ranch in southeastern Arizona. We are fortunate to have year round grazing, as we have no winter snow to contend with, in our lower elevation pastures, and when there is sufficient moisture (not this year) there are strong cool season grasses in the higher elevation pastures. Our cattle are very active browsers, feeding on a wide variety of trees and shrubs, as well as prickly pear cactus during the winter, so we don’t need to feed.

      Horror Hero Comics ,
      So if Whole Foods sells it, it must be good......
      shop local, enjoy the flavor of your local bio region,
      Savor the taste of your ecosystem.
      Avoid shiny box industrial food..... just my reaction to your comment..... the horror is in the degrees of separation between where it is grown, and where you consume it. And what is lost along the way.

    Just so people know since i have RL experience in this matter. The fat on grassfed beef is YELLOW. Cornfed is the usual white you see in stores. Same goes for the chicken. If its a free range one it has a more yellowish tint to it. Kisses from Greece :)

    • @alphacause
      @alphacause 6 років тому +22

      dragonxx444, thanks for the tip. I am sure that when more health conscious people become aware of the color difference in grassfed and grainfed animals, these corporations will find a chemical means to replicate the color of grassfed fat, and color the meat. It wouldn't be the first time agribusiness has done this. Margin is sold as a substitute for butter, and agribusiness deliberately dyes the margin to look very similar to butter.

    • @dragonxx444
      @dragonxx444 6 років тому +8

      Drake Santiago true they might do that. It would be better to really do some research who sell something good in your area.... hard, i know... but worth it

    • @pam0077
      @pam0077 6 років тому +12

      This is actually a very unreliable way to confirm if it's 100% grass fed or not. One, the level of yellow tint depends a lot on time of year the animal was harvested. If it was toward the end of the growing season, the fat will be more yellow. If it was toward the end of winter, it's going to be almost as white as conventionally raised beef. Two, as Drake alluded, businesses very often will use food dyes to meet customer expectations in what it should look like.

    Definitely agree grass-finished is better than grain-finished, but... The bad thing about this video is that some people will now use it to vilify all non-grass-finished beef. Grain finished beef is still 100Xs better than what the average American eats, so it's still a good alternative for people on a budget.

    • @hemiller6517

      I agree. While grass-fed, grain-finished beef is not ideal, it surely is much better than 100% grain-fed beef.
      But, there are studies that show that even eating grains for a short period of time can alter the fatty acid profile of the beef negatively. There will be a larger ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3. At least it won't be as bad as 100% grain-fed.

      I don't know how people don't like the taste of 100% grass-fed beef. It's like eating a spoon of conventional grain-fed butter and then tasting some raw (or even pasteurized) 100% grass-fed butter. The flavor difference is astounding! And the health differences are also astounding. Grass-fed is the way to go.

    As a 100% artisan grass farmer, I thank you from the bottom of my heart that you are standing up for this vital truth. 100% pasture raised and fed is what humans were designed to consume. Grain feeding ruminants is not natural, it is a a short sighted profit hack. The only way consumers can be certain of honest grass finished meat, is to establish a relationship with a farmer and by directly from them. Farmers are more honest than grocery chains

    Other grass fed websites I have gone to immediately tell your their commitment to the planet, animals, people's health. They describe their farming practices and answer common questions. They list their pricing in an easy to find manner. Butcherbox has nothing like that. Does not look legit at all. Love this info. Not wanting GMO or pesticide ridden grains in your diet is one thing, but gaining the understanding of how the grain diet for the cows impacts the Omega 6/Omega 3 ratio is priceless info. Thanks, Thomas. I tried the Butcher Box service with 3 extras, on an every other month delivery, and have to say, the meat is beautiful. It would be nice to know what you are getting, but being able to choose the add ons does help make sure you will get enough of what you want. I am very pleased with the order. I have found a local dairy farm that is fully pasture raised for beef, pork, chicken, and makes raw milk cheeses, also organic, obviously. They deliver to your door for $1.50...omigosh...can't believe it. I like being able to go to the farm and see their practices first hand. I'll definitely be patronizing them also. They don't have bacon all year around and they do use sugar in smoking the bacon, so think there is room for me to keep the Butcher Box order going bi-monthly as well, and focus on eggs, cream, butter, cheese and some meat from the local guys. If I can help a local producer be able to keep their farms sustainable...gotta go that route as much as possible.

    Thomas, I love your channel and all of your content. I am an avid promoter of a healthy keto lifestyle, too. But I want to add a small caveat to the info provided in this video. I have a Bachelors in Animal Sciences and have studied the in's and out's of livestock health/nutrition and crop production in not only the U.S. but on a global scale as well. Dry Distillers Grains (or DDG's) are byproducts of ethanol production. For example, most DDG's used on feedlots are from corn ethanol production. However, not all DDG's are made from corn. You see, you can create ethanol from any plant containing starches. This includes many grasses (like alfalfa for example) which are commonly fed to cattle. So not all DDG's are corn-derived. This is why the USDA allows the "Grass Fed and Finished" label to be put on certain beef products, because those cows were finished on DDG's derived from the ethanol production from grasses, not corn. Thus, the cattle are still completely grain free. I hope this clears some possible confusion for consumers that read through the comments. It is no secret that advertising/marketing specialists can be sneaky and tricky, so I always recommend looking into where and how your food was raised/grown before it ever enters your mouth! Donavon Gazalski - hi from a fellow Animal Scientist, watching the rumors on these food channels is nuts, so few understand any ruminant is simply feeding its microorganisms with these plant sources, then that nice cow or deer or bison really eats the microbes, I personally like the idea of mostly grass fed, with just a bit of grain at the end for marbling, I don't see any harm in GMO, just selective breeding sped up

    Another major reason the industry prefers grain finished (and the reason that cows are induced to calve in Jan or Feb instead of April): if they calve early and sell them to feedlots in Oct/Nov, they don't have to overwinter the steers, and put up/buy more hay for them.

    I have a friend who is a straight carnivore and wrote a book about carnivore diet. I told him I was buying grass fed meat. he said don't waste your money it's all grass fed. I asked the butcher at Sprouts about the label grass fed. He said the beef not marked as grass fed is fed grass but the last year to fatten them up they are fed grains . Grains means corn. Dog foods use a lot of corn which I never feed my dog. I asked him what they feed pork now. He said Purina makes a feed for pork and horses. I never feed my dog Purina because most of it is junk dog food. Now after this video I am back to BS on the grass fed. Thanks for informing Tom!

    I have a few friends that farm. One of them, every 2 years, I buy a "side" of a Steer. I know how he farms, and have seen the land where they are raised. One time I cut up the side myself and packaged it, but no more, now I have it butchered at a local small farmers co-op owned packers plant. I need a good size freezer for all of that meat, and the last time it was 600$ ( thats at least $3000 in the store) I would have more if I cut it myself, but its brutal work, bravo to people that do it. The point is this. Go to any farmers market. Ask around if any of the people selling there know any ranchers that sell direct to people. Lots will because you can for cash. Visit that ranch. This is the best way to get the actual meat you want. the only drawback is most of the meat you will be now thawing from frozen, but its not a deal breaker when it is this cheap to do so. I have a native Indian friend that is trying to get a few of us to go in on a buffalo, that will be my next meat purchase. But its waaaaay more meat than a Steer. Good luck!

I bet there are enough people out there that are willing to donate a $1 a month for keeping this great content alive. In addition you can give back to those distributors easily with special Q&A's for Patreon supporters, etc.

    Similar problem with the labelling of 'free range' eggs. They let the chickens out of their cages for a hour a day just to get the free range tag.
    The good thing about eggs are that it's easy to identify the quality of the egg by it's yolk & it's shell. Yolk should be a deep orange & it's shell is a lot thicker than your typical commercial egg.

    I remember there was a time when Del Monte here in the Philippines grew cattle that were fed scraps from the pineapple canning production. So they would feed the pineapple tops and pulp left over from the juice production to the cows. I know technically it's not grass but I think it's better than grain fed... wish they will do that again... it produced a slightly sweeter beef. Though marbling is not high.

    Folks, spend some time bouncing around the net watching videos that the farmers and ranchers make about what they do and why. Its the best way to feel good about your purchase and trust that what your buying is what you think it is. Better yet, go cows life on the ranch is the most critical to its health, it takes the longest time and it's the most expensive part. The cheapest way is rarely the best way. Spend more on your food and your health and how you feel will be awesome

      Ironclad Confidence ........went to whole foods back then, right before they went through their sales scandal. Short story....my gf had been there, I hadn't. I walked around looking at the prices...laughing. Stupid ass people. I immediately wanted to go over to the meat section and low and behold more propaganda, marketing horse shit. A sign said "100% Angus" beef. I asked the "butcher" about it and got a preprogrammed response. I asked him to prove it....tell me what he knows. Again nothing. He got mad and I told him to , "calm down I'll tell you". So I did. He is a consumer just like me. As a cattleman I educate people when and where they are being cheated about beef. It serves me and serves them. FYI: since your wondering the meat came from a massive corporate feedlot and processing facility ~250 miles away. Moral of the story, they were selling over priced, false advertised, old, nasty, corporate, feedlot beef.
      China loves that crap, apparently. Lol

It's about all I can do to afford to eat regular beef. My access to grass finished is only at Farmer's Markets. I have to drive an hour to get to one that has beef.

    I like the plugs. I'm not likely to buy the products, but they give me a point of reference if I end up seeking out alternative products to what's locally available. For example, I've added in mushroom suppliments to my vitamins and keto regimen. Had it not been for watching Paul Stamets, I would be less skeptical of different sources of mushrooms and would likely go for a low cost high count bottle of cordyceps rather than looking into efficacy, sourcing, species identification and accuracy, and so forth. Keep the plugs!
    Also, I like that you use lots of cut footage with your family. I like family values, and I think they're in decline. For anyone trying to shift from an unhealthy lifestyle to a healthier one, it's important to note that your family (chosen or otherwise) can play a significant role in your success, and you are an important component in their lives as well - which is part of why you want to be healthy (I'm sure most of you already considered this early on however).

    Hey Thomas, let me help you out. When it comes to feeding cattle corn the FDA (and USDA) mean the corn plant. Ranchers typically produce cattle AND they also farm corn and other grains. After harvest, it is common practice to allow your cattle to graze on the remaining bi-mass in the field. And as you may or may not know, CORN is a grass. So allowing cattle to graze on it does not disqualify the cattle meat from being classified as Grass fed as it did scientifically graze on grass. The removal, which is actually stated as a reduction of STARCH is obtained because the starch from the dent corn is already harvested from the fields and the remaining biomass provides the rancher now with 1000s of acres of bushel bales of grass. You are correct. Grass Fed doesn't mean that the cattle is grassed on open pasture but just that is has eaten grass at some point in its development. The economics of meat production still leads a rancher to find ways to get a heavy animals to slaughter because $/head is how they get paid for all of the investment they have made prior to its sale.
