      He wasn't fat at all. You guys need to keep in mind Japan has among the highest death rates induced by eating disorders per capita in the world; along with highest rates of stroke, diabetes, and gastric cancer. As someone who grew up in a Japanese home [mother's], I can understand that "thin" is seen as healthy no matter what in our culture. BULLSHIT! Obsessing over weight is ANYTHING but healthy. America simply needs to promote more healthful fast food eateries and choices. At Japanese convenience shops they sell fish and rice balls, as in REAL FOOD to teens and workers. 7-11's here sell nothing like that.>n

      Lev Sagan this is why UA-cam is such BS. I wonder how many people read your comment and believed it without looking into it. Almost everything you said is wrong. France and Austria have the highest rates of eating disorders. Also Japan ranks towards the extremely low end of strokes and diabetes. They are widely considered to have the healthiest diets on earth. Maybe it was just your family who suffered from obesity because you moved to the west.

    I hit the gym here in Japan 3X a week+. But most guys who work for regular Japanese companies don't have time for any of that because they're working (and stress eating) all the time. And don't blame it on Macdonalds etc. Japan has plenty of home-grown fatty foods. It's not that they're eating American food -- it's that they're working too much and eating crap like ramen, beef bowls and other super fatty stuff, and topping that off with massive amounts of alcohol after work.

    There are far less people in a population that will fall out of that healthy fat range that are still healthy.

    Wait a minute - I totally agree with the principle here. But don't you think their standards of what is overweight is a tad strict? They consider a waist size of 33.5 in men overweight - I wear a size 34 in jeans and in no way is that overweight. If they are going to make being overweight illegal, which I don't disagree with, at least raise the limit.

We can't scapegoat the blame on people's thyroids and metabolism. Most people in the United States are overweight due to poor eating habits and physical inactivity.

    • @geekeing
      @geekeing 10 років тому

      The waistline measurement parameter, 33.5"/35.4" is based on the International Diabetes Federation recommendation for Japanese only (other ethnic groups have different parameters) as an easy guideline for identifying weight-related ailments, T-2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancers. And regarding the 35.4" for women it is because of the way fat is stored for childbirth. After menopause, that fat, which was stored in the buttocks, thighs, and hips, move to the abdominal area and is more difficult to lose. Childbirth and menopause, issues men do not experience.

      Waist measurements are not as accurate as people may think, they want to fight obesity, obesity is caused by having a high bodyfat percentage. A skinny person can be deemed overweight when their bodyfat percentages are checked, hence in exercise science, we use the term skinny fat (physically they look normal, but because of the lack in muscle tissue, they have a higher body fat percentage which is bad). If they really want to fight obesity, they need to use a bod pod or dexa scan, which are some of the most accurate machines out there.

    • @geekeing
      @geekeing 10 років тому

      Taka Miyauchi
      In a perfect world, your recommendation would be excellent, but in a practical world your idea is too expensive. With a less than 5% obesity ranking, obesity is not a serious issue in Japan. The prime goal of the metabo mandate is to maintain a low number of weight-related conditions; T-2 diabetes ,cardiovascular disease, certain cancers etc. among the national healthcare membership, maintain low healthcare costs. As you, no doubt, know we Asians suffered from weight-related issues at a lower weight than Westerners. and with 44% of Japanese Nationals entering age 40+ and the growing popularity of Western-type fast foods the metabo mandate which will educate, teach moderation and supplement the custom of frank discussion about weight among Japanese Nationals. It's not a perfect solution but it is a start.

    • @geekeing
      @geekeing 10 років тому

      Taka Miyauchi
      Thank you for opening my awareness about the bod pod. I hadn't heard of it before and found this device quite fascinating. Also about the condition of skinny fat. Do you think, given their lifestyle, a high percentage of Japanese Nationals might suffer from this condition? Quite certain a good percentage of Americans do but as Japanese Nationals have the highest potential for long lifespan, might they?

    • @takamiyauchi9954
      @takamiyauchi9954 10 років тому

      geekeing
      You are welcome, the bod pod is indeed a very fascinating device, I personally use it myself when I prep for my competitions in Physique, luckily for me, it is free to use as my school has one in my department. I am guessing you are asking me about the issue of obesity or overweight problems in Japan? If not, I apologize for the misunderstanding. I personally believe, that Japanese people in general have a much healthier diet than some of the western countries, which contributes to long lifespan. Having said that, it is true that there is a growing popularity in western foods such as mcdonalds, burger king, etc. However, because Japan has such a good transportation system, people walk everywhere, which also contributes to the low rates in terms of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases. I am not sure if you have ever been to Japan, but in Japan, you really do not need a car, as the train pretty much takes you anywhere you want, as well as buses. While fast foods are a problem in for example, the united states, another problem is the fact that the US lacks a good transportation system, which is understandable taking into consideration how big the states are, which makes it harder to build train tracks, stations, etc. I do not think eating fast food or western foods or any food for that matter will make too much of a difference, but like you suggested, moderation is key, and because people in Japan walk daily, probably more than what the ACSM recommends for a healthy lifestyle, I do not see the rates increasing for diabetes, etc.

Or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and grandchildren what is used to be like in the United States when men were free.” - Ronald Reagan

    We can solve this problem for lower income people by reforming the food stamp system. Food stamps should only be accepted for real food. Not chips, cookies, soft drinks etc. Food stamps should only be used for food products such as produce ie:fruits, vegetables, and raw uncooked meat and fish. Food stamps should be good for only juice not drinks. ie Florida Orange Juice, NOT Sunny Delight. This will help to limit obesity, cholesterol, blood pressure, and diabetes issues for lower income people.

    @Sazad93 No, I was never asked anything about the status of my health when I received medical plans from my country. They simply asked the type I wanted which was HMO or PPO. So you are incorrect again. The CDC states that obese / overweight spend $~1500 more than non-obese people in health care cost. Not that much. this includes diabetes needs and strips which are very expensive. And 4.5 years? Who cares. Still doesnt mean I need to be FORCED to be skinny by a govt who shouldnt have concern

  • @bbqchickenrobot3
    @bbqchickenrobot3 12 років тому

    @Sazad93 Whats not illegal? There is a fine if you are fat. That makes it illegal. US companies don't pay more if you are overweight. You get insurance period. Never have I been asked to take a fat test when I receive insurance thru a company. So that def makes it different than the US. Our govt has better stuff to think about than if people are fat. Thats the job of the individual not the govt. IMO its a way in which govt can squeeze more money from the people and spin it as som'n positive.

    Comprehending what you have been told is important. The law is saying that if a company's employees reach a certain "Fatness" level, they could face fines and increased health care premiums.
    That is NOT, I repeat for the uploader of this video NOT the same thing as saying it is ILLEGAL to be fat.

    @Sazad93 No clarification needed. Our govt isn't saying pizza is a vege. & Taking pizza off grade school menus does not equal the billions of dollars japan will benefit from lol. Nice try, but very far reach. In fact, they didnt say pizza was a vegetable, they stated that it had enough tomato based ingredients to qualify it as eatable for young kids in schools. Congress NEVER declared pizza as a vegetable. You need to realize that your country is spinning things incorrectly.

    I don't disagree with you on that, but the overweight/obese stigma should not be thrown at all people especially if their born that way. but yes you are right people are getting fat by eating crap, but they are choosing to eat bad food, and in some way they have no choice because a healthy diet sometimes is not affordable in the current economic crisis, when people need to eat on a budget sometimes fast food is cheaper the healthy food and I yes it is horrible but until someone can fix it==>

    fat- of course, but what about muscle? It make sense for the average build type in Japan to meet that goal, but there are always physical exceptions and racial interbreeding which create larger specimens? What do you suggest man over 6 feet does? Cut the pure lean Muscle off his bones? This law can have a serious backlash for people who aren't even fat at all.

    I'm an American bodybuilder. There's no way my gigantic body frame can shrink under 33 inches to fit their criteria. I don't want to be a skinny little bitch boy. I love my 36 inch waist and I'm not even near embarrassed because I carry 10 times the muscle of those Japanese guys.

    @Sazad93 I didn't judge anyone. I used an example of how govt control results in a loss of freedom. Women who are forced to wear som'n they dont want to or if a person is forced to take a fat test is a loss of freedom & violation of personal rights.The fact that you think women opt to wear a Burka shows youre not aware. Americans don't subscribe to govt control. I'm a diabetic & watch the quantity & type of my intake. It's not hard & Im not or have ever been overweight.

  • @ryansmith1867

    It is not possible to go to waistline 33 for people in other parts of the world..Japanese people have a thin frame that's why it might have been possible there..if you take a regular American, his skeleton's waist itself may be more than 35😂😂

    @Sazad93 I haven't been to McDonalds or Dominos, etc... in about three months. If you go everyday - it's a choice. If you eat fried twinkies it's a choice. Private companies shouldnt' be forced to pay when you can easily stop jamming cupcakes and double cheese burgers down your throat. That's the bottom line. Japan's govt is simply capitalizing on this *choice* and gaining monetarily from it.
