Loved Nell. This world lost such a treasure in her. We grew up seeing characters like her. It is horrible to think of the utter crap these last generations have been exposed to.

But I agree that was a bit much considering their dynamic. Looking back, I noticed Gimme A Break did alot of heavy topic episodes. Today, they probably would. The N word was also used frequently on The Jeffersons' early seasons. In 2005 TV Land ranked this episode # 38 as part of its "100 Most Unexpected Moments in TV History". In this case, it probably should be allowed for the sole reason in that it directly addressed the issue and showed that it is unacceptable. In any other context, it wouldn't be acceptable to broadcast. Since the main character is African-American, it could be properly handled. In early 1983, there was an episode where Margaret's sister (the sister of the mother) wanted to take custody of the girls and didn't want Nell raising them. That was a different facet of how racism was handled, but it was just as valid.
