Side Door Sessions Full Doc: goo.gl/qPkZRv
This performance was filmed in Quidi Vidi, Newfoundland & Labrador at the end of the tour. I was invited to do a Lawnya Vawnya Songwriters Residency there at the lovely Inn By Mallard, and as part of it, did a couple shows at the end of the week and gave the proceeds to the Girls Rock NL. My dear friend and HR bandmate Phil Maloney shot the video, with Duncan de Young, and it was edited by Curt Lobb. We chose to show this song in this location for obvious reasons i guess: after weeks playing it out West and over the Prairies and the Canadian Shield, it felt especially good and full and right to play there on the edge of the water, at the edge of Town.
It’s a song that was a long time coming. In all the years touring with the band, we must’ve left and returned to St John’s a thousand times. And each time you return, especially from a long run in the US or abroad, you’re newly hit with the unique energy of it - and how the weather and architecture and language and music and geography of the place have, over the years, gotten inside you and built you in their image - and so coming home and seeing your people and going through your old haunts feels a bit like a puzzle piece slotting back into place. Its hard to explain. But music is a big part of it. So i wrote this song.
SPIRIT - Lyrics and Chords
Eb (ie. capo3 Cmajor)
I. C C F Em Em F Am G F :|
slide like a spirit down the same old roads
you been haunting these hills since the morning you were born
now the cracks in the pavement are the cracks in your heart
you go over the same old faults every time you walk to the bar
ain’t you wet when you get there, whether rain or tears or sweat
and the wind shaking the panes, it’s the same as in your chest
II. F C/G F/A C/G :|
yes, it’s the same out there, as it is in here
it’s the same out there, as it is in here
I. why should it be different, should it be anything but that
should we open our mouths and spit out california sand
no we sing what we’re given into a piece of shit p.a.
we sing Grey Foggy Day, we sing No Change In Me
yeah but it’s arm in arm in arm and ain’t it loud enough to stun
hearing them all heaving along into the one same song
II. oh, is it the same out there, as it is in here?
is it the same out there, as it is down here?
III. D D G 3/4D
So pull your cloak around me now
D D G 3/4Bm
Pull your cloak around me now
D D G 3/4Bm 1/4G
Pull me close and keep the cold night out
A G A G-D :|
Oh lean in to me
so you’re near to me now
once a stranger to me but
now you’re the song in my mouth
I. ladadedadah…
(D D G F#m F#m G Bm A G :| )
I. slide like a spirit out to the icy steps
feel the night on your face, the mist on your lips
and you pull the cloak around you, as you listen to the wind
and you hum the refrain, as you take the hill again
My son stills falls asleep tour voice. i am always in love with your voice. It is perfect.
My god this is beautiful. I cannot wait to experience Tim Baker at the Mariposa Festival next weekend.
They are going to love you!!❤
I love your music Tim. Please never stop making it.
As a Canadian (Nova Scotia) who now lives in Brazil this song brings back so many memories and incredible feelings and makes me miss home in a way I haven't in quite a long time. I'm so glad you are releasing new music. All three songs are beautiful and unique and I'm so excited for anything else you have in store for us.
Can’t wait to see you in hamilton in April ❤️
what a great soulful song....really, really, love it.
Good guy!
Once a stranger to me, now you're the song in my mouth. 🖤 Wonderful.
My favorite line too 💜
Another wonderful song...enjoying the side door sessions!
seeing him play in an old church in Hamilton Ont. was the literal definition of a religious experience, please never stop making my heart both happy and sad in the same instance
A beautiful song, Tim. It makes me feel so good.
I've seen you more than 10 times, and these songs are just so beautiful. I wish I were in that room. Love you and can't wait for more..
Slide like a spirit down the same old roads
You've been haunting these hills since the morning you were born
Now the cracks in the pavement are the cracks in your heart
You go over the same old faults everytime you walk to the bar.
Ain't you wet when you get there, whether rain or tears or sweat?
And the wind shaking the panes, it's the same as in your chest.
Yeah
It's the same out there
As it is in here.
Is it the same out there,
As it is in here?
Why should it be different?
Should it be anything but that?
Should we open our mouths and spit out California sand?
No we sing what we're given into a piece of shit PA.
We sing Grey Foggy Day, we sing No Change in Me.
Yeah, but it's arm and arm and arm and ain't it loud enough to stun?
Hearing them all heaving along
Into the one same song.
Oh, is it the same out there
As it is in here?
Is it the same out there
As it is down here?
Pull your cloak around me now.
Pull your cloak around me now.
Pull me close and keep the cold night out.
Hmm
Oh lean into me, so you're near to me now.
Once a stranger to me but now you're the song in my mouth.
La da da da das.
You slide like a spirit out to the icy steps
Feel the night on your face feel the mist on your lips.
You pull the cloak around you and you listen to the wind
And you hum the refrain as you take the hill again.
hey thanks paul! nice one. actually "whether rain or tears or sweat" and "aint it loud enough to stun" and "oh lean into me" - but pretty good considering i'm a heavy mumbler
@@heytimbaker I edited it for other people's convenience! Thanks for replying and fixing! Love this song.
I almost went with whether at first too.
Perfectly captures these shows. Wow. So gorgeous.
Great song!
Tim, this video (along with many of your other videos) is so amazingly atmospheric. Like a perfect moment in time, captured. If I had only seen this one video of you, I would think it was an anomaly, but you have so many of these, where you can almost smell the air in the room, and the performance just falls into place so perfectly. You lead a very charmed life. Thanks for sharing it in this way. Beautiful song, btw. I've watched/listened to it about 50 times by now. It makes me want to visit NL -- only in the Summer. ;)
I was fortunate enough to see tim in ridgeway ontario. His show was fantastic
I love this song so much 8 glad he provided the chords to. 👍🏻
this is amazing Tim
So good! Please put this in Spotify so i can listen to it all the time!
Lauren Gaudet Apple Music has him and he’s also in Hey Rosetta. I been searching for this song forever. Heard on xpn didn’t catch the artist and finally found it again. This song and others by him are amazing.
Love you Tim

Stephen Lee!!!!
Another beautiful song, Tim.
Thank you for all of your music. I hope it continues but really everything so far is such an important thing and I will pass this down to my newborn son. Coincidentally he has his daddy's (giant) head, his mothers's eyes, and his daddy's (and mother's) love. Much love for all that you do.
Beautiful song. I can’t wait to hear more of your new works.
Tim,.your music has been a huge part of your life for many years now. Found you by chance on Last.fm with The Simplest thing. I only got to see Hey Rosetta twice, both times were sort of mini shows (opening for Sarah Harmer in Rochester NY, and once in Buffalo where you were under the weather) and both times were really amazing for me.
Hoping you come back to this area soon with all this new stuff.
Omg was that Buffalo show where he was sick the one where people got up and did live karaoke to their songs? I wasn't there but I heard about it and wish I was haha. I saw HR! a ridiculous number of times being based in Toronto but seeing them in Buffalo the one time I did opening for Stars was one of my favourites because it was all massive fans (Americans who had to actively seek them out because they weren't popular in the States, and Canadian fans diehard enough that they wanted to cross the border to see them in a smaller venue) so the crowd was so great. God I miss them.
themoley91 It was! I’m pretty bummed to have not had the chance to be in an electric crowd all singing along. But was also a blessing to get to jam to them so intimately when I saw them.
Oh I think this is my favourite from the new songs you've done so far. Wonderful, wonderful. 💕 Will be so thrilled the day you release your CD. 😊
I've been waiting for this since I heard it at Tim's songwriting circle at Factory !
beautiful song. Great video. Really nice editing too. congrats to all.
Beauty!
