- Hundreds of people gathered outside the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Washington D.C. Friday night to recognize the one-year mark of the war in Ukraine.
They held candles as they sang together. The colors blue and yellow were projected on to the outside of the Embassy in Boris Nemtsov Plaza on Wisconsin Avenue in Northwest.
People from all over, including both Russia and Ukraine stood together in a show of solidarity.
"We have never been this united. We have never felt the support of the world behind us like we feel today," shouted one of the speakers to the crowd.
"The Russians are killing Ukrainians they're killing maiming torturing trying to obliterate our country," said Roman Yasinksy.
For many in the crowd the mood was somber.
"How can you live in peace when that is going on," said Marina Dewees. She told WUSA9 she had family in both Ukraine and Russia.
"The war just cuts through my life, the lives of my family. It's the worst year of my life and worst thing I could ever picture happen to us," said Dewees.
She and many of the others in attendance called for more support for Ukraine.

Naive and self indulgent. Should we let bullies steamroll our families and neighbors, so they can own them? If Ukraine looses, the free world looses. Lawless strong arming will spread to Taiwan, Kazakstan etc. etc. That war isn't happening in a vacuum. We should be sending more, so the war can end quickly.

I have no problem sending money to help Ukraine, but damn, our politicians completely ignore the problems with citizens dying right here at home. Fentynal just pouring in across the southern border, homelessness rampant, environmental disaster in Ohio, and so much more.

It is far better to use our money to help people who will fight for what is right, then to use tax dollars to try to force people to do what's right who won't accept the help they need. That is just a waste of time and money.
@Derek D not everyone who dies from fentynal is a drug addict or a homeless mental patient. Fentynal is killing people in middle America at a record clip. I believe it's the leading cause of death for young people if I'm not mistaken. They are not all washed up drug addicts. Many are everyday kids who make a bad choice. It's that exact attitude that will cause zero change in America's battle with the drug epidemic. As for the Ukrainian people I have no problem with sending tax money to help, but Ukraine is ran by corrupt politicians including Zelenski. As for America's politicians, especially the present administration, they are more corrupt than Zelenski. How much of those hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars are going in the pockets of the corrupt politicians? The truth would probably shock us both. Help them yes, but how about help here at home where at least it's more difficult to hide the damn money.

You’d be surprised what we waste tax dollars on everyday. In my opinion helping Russia destroy and weaken itself for the next three decades is worth every penny. Russia has been and adversary for quite a while. They have directly interfered with our democracy and political system and are a military threat to Europe and the free world.
Dude most of it not even your tax dollars, but equipment our army isn’t even using anymore and is sitting rotting in a warehouse. In the grand scheme of the US budget it’s a drop in the bucket. Also a lot of the stuff is lend lease so we’ll get our money back likely with interest down the road.

Many Democrats have been fighting for years for all sorts of environmental protections that many Republicans/ Conservatives fight tooth and nail to prevent.
A train derailment , which is devastating, that is being looked at and cleaned up by local, state, and federal agencies VS the largest land war in Europe since WW2 that's caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands, an immigration crisis in Europe, and the potential precursor to the 3rd world war.
I'm an American and I still think the latter is far more important to us as a nation on security, financial, and humanitarian level.
I do agree thought that more aggressive action could and should've been taken on the derailment. East Palestine's population is less than 5,000, even if the air is safe to breath, I'm not sure why we can't re-locate any family's or elderly couple wishes to temporarily leave. It seems all states need to increase their disaster expense fund to help cover re-location of residents.
