I think these guys are really underappriciated. They can play an incredible amount of instruments, they can sing, they write everything by themselves, they can speak a lot of different languages, they are funny (watch their talkshow, they ususally have english subtitles).
Just look at this video.
They learned a really hard knot and created a dance for it.
And it's not even fake, they do tie the knot in the video and the dance works irl for tying it. An incredible amount of work and talant for something that's discarded as stupid songs.
I think they are more deserving of fame than the majority of pop stars famous in mainstream music today.

It's a knot used by truckers.
It's primarily used to tie things down to the top of your car. Seen alone as Ylvis does it here, it's useless (except as an entertaining dance). However, take a look at the diagram in the book, it goes around a ring. For those who still think these guys are trying to make good music, let me explain this; THEY'RE NOT.
Ylvis are the Jimmy Fallon of Norway. It was only a crazy fluke that they got world famous with "The Fox".. which was NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE A HIT, by the way; it was supposed to be a "so-bad-its-funny" song for their comedy show back home. So if their music is unoriginal, that's because its a parody of music that already exists. If their lyrics are stupid, its because that's the point. Do we all understand Ylvis now?

Kittja Gelmer Nah, "lonely island" is trying to make good funny songs, that's what they do, that's ALL they do. Ylvis are not musicians. They're all-around comedians. The reason I compared them to Jimmy Fallon is, if Jimmy Fallon made a music video of a dumb song, we (in the US) would all get that the video is only one piece of a whole act, not Jimmy making a name for himself on the video alone. So in reality, all of Ylviss' music videos on UA-cam are taken out of context, which makes it harder for people to understand what their deal is.

The beat that sounds like the one in Gentleman is subtle enough to make people think they heard it somewhere, they did that on purpose because they've been compared a lot to Psy. At this point they could even be parodying their own song to make people think they're aiming for another "fox-like" hit. You never know with Ylvis. I Fing LOVE this video. I did the same thing as a child. I learned every knot in a book. As an adult, I proudly used a "sheepshank" to connect two different kinds of wire for a friend's wedding. The "knot" would not allow the wires to pull apart. No matter how goofy Ylvis is, I still love them. I also love their younger brother "I will never be a star."--that guy. They're great.

The truth is, the second part (like Gangnam Style and Gentleman) and (What does the fox say and Trucker's Hitch), I'm not hating, but I don't think the second one is as good as the first.
This is not their second video after the fox either. But, yeah, it is getting a lot of attention than the videos that came after the fox.

I pretty much agree with you. Jan Egeland, Stonehenge, Work It, The Fox I would rank as "Tier 1", Pressure, Someone Like Me, The Cabin as "Tier 2". Massachusetts and Trucker's Hitch are catchy and have some moments that make me chuckle, but the comedy is not as smart as their other songs.

At first I just kinda sat there not knowing that to think of the new song. Then Vegard lovingly crashed his little boat and fell into the water and I laughed so hard, I shot lemonade out of my nose! I really dig the music. I LOVE the country twang. I really like that they did something unexpected. That's one of the many reasons I love Ylvis so much. We've seen do so many vocal styles, it isn't hard to fathom country as a logical progression for their sometimes illogical brand of humor. We have seen them rap (Gangsta Babies, Pressure), tackle slow jazz (The Cabin, Careless Whisper), belt out gospel (Pie Jesu), Christmas standards (Ja, Da Vet Du Det Er Jul), R & B (Work It), Tha dubstep (Someone Like Me) and 80's power rock (Jan Egeland). It nice to see them continue the tradition of mixing it up and keeping us on our toes and Electro-Country is naturally the next step. I love it. Who knows...this might become the next line dance song in country music dance clubs all over the world!!! Keep rocking Bård and Vegard!!

I'm going to guess that's the point. The Fox was mad, with professional people, to parody the stupid pop songs that are made these days. The fact that it became so popular only makes it more ironic... This is the same kind of parody.

I understand this argument but I can't fully agree. I just feel it when things haven't come out... "naturally", as it happened with the fox more or less. This has a lot more calculated and just lazy things production wise which isn't the same as parodying the mainstream genre
Manu I have to disagree, what you say about it being lazy is just the point, these kinds of songs just have lazy choruses with a simple beat. The Fox was made on the same basis with a discarded beat from M4SONIC.
I don't really see the difference between this song and all their other stuff they have done for years. - They take an old cliche and add a silly theme to it. - folk music, 80s "dance band", classic rock, techno, country techno, pop, etc. always the same principle. - The fox just happened to hit a nerve, by accident, so the expectations have changed.
The point of all of their music is satire. Reusing note progressions and lazy lyrics is kind of the point here.
This is brilliantly clever and funny. The humor doesn't only lie in the random lyrics, but also the way they dis the music scene of today with the 3 super overused styles: beginning with country vibe (Mumford and Sons), then having your typical instrumental "one chord only" chorus with the song title repeated after each round (basically every artist today), then having your typical over synthesized breakdown with rap "calling all people" (Pitbull) while someone sings oh's in the background.

Some producers try to make EDM like bigroom and electro house, and they're too similar. Try to put some drop in a pop song, and ruined that song. Ylvis made that song, and that was my thought. Their songs are always meaningful and deep as you can't see Adele rolling...
But, things like that happen in every industry. ;)

Very funny. These guys have a peculiar sense of humor, for certain. What I didn't realize until I watched more of their videos is that they just parody/farce whatever their hearts feel like, regardless of what the mass appeal is. God bless 'em for it!
I am an Eagle Scout and an amateur fisherman. So, I have tied many knots in my day. Super funny. I am confused why professional comedians/pranksters would choose a subject that so few would get, but whatever I guess! Maybe people in northern Europe have a different knot-tying bent, but perhaps I'll never know.
This video is a part of a talk show. We have been told a story in front and this music video gives answers to that story. In this case, it was useful to learn this knot :)
That is true. Most comedians whether it is stand-up comedians or singers that makes parodies, they always go for the secure and safe topics. Sex, money, girls, relationships, gambling, cars, jobs, political, education, other famous stars etc. And then make something funny out of that. While Ylvis can get completely off track and make a song about a completely random and specific thing.

Everyone should learn to make a truckers hitch. It's super easy, it turns your rope into a pulley system (block and tackle) which is so strong you can secure the heaviest load on your car or whatever. I swear, once you learn it, you will use it every time you tie something down.
