    2009 Hyundai Elantra..
The car that you "can't remember when you last saw one of those" because they blend so well into everyday blandness.

The only suggestions I have are to remember to change the timing belt at least reasonably on schedule (Hyundai OE part only), if it's a 2007 and never had the timing belt replaced, that's too long. Also a drain and fill on the transmission every 30k miles. The only actual repair I've needed to do on this car in 224k miles has been an alternator.

I remember back in 2011 one of my HS classmates had a 2010 and raved about how great it was compared to other previous Hyundais. You’re definitely right about this gen Elantra being the start of the better Hyundai.

Outstanding review...I bought a brand new 2010 Hyundai Elantra (base trim) model that was almost identical to the 2009 you reviewed. I bought the car for the reason you mentioned towards the end of the video...the Consumer Reports recommendation. The transmission started slipping at 95k, and they honored their warranty without a fuss and swapped the transmission free of charge. I had it until it got totaled in a wreck, and I replaced it with a 2017 Hyundai Elantra SE dealer loaner with 10K miles on it, but with a warranty. Now that the secret is out that they are great cars with a great warranty, they do cost a lot of money. It's great to learn about a wide variety of cars, but if need a miler that starts, steers, and stops with a long warranty and low long-term dollar-per-mile total-cost-of-ownership, the Hyundai's are hard to beat.

I was duped into buying a Vovlo S80 for my first car. Lesson learned! I did extensive research on my next vehicle. 3 years later, I have no complaints. This car has proven to be one of the best purchases I ever made. I rep my 2009 GLS very proudly!!!

Nice review of the Hyundai Elantra 🙂 I had bought a 2008 GLS sedan and drove it for years until 2010 , but every thing about the car was great! Great on long road trips, great in the city, the repairs were minimal, never broke down and all around driving views were fantastic, can't say anything bad about this model of Elantra 🙂

I had a 2008 Elantra SE. I bought it because it was Consumer Reports' highest-rated compact, but only in SE trim, because SE came with wider tires and ESC. Mine had a temp and fuel gauge, so they must have jumped on the idiot light bandwagon in '09. That's when they added the USB port as well. As I recall, you needed to buy a special cable from Hyundai to get your iPod to work with it. I will say mine lasted me nearly trouble-free for 95,000 miles. It had an issue once where I couldn't get it to start for a few days, and I was just about to call a tow truck that could get it out of my condo's underground garage when it decided to start on my last attempt like nothing happened. I sold it to a guy with the screen name "nug buckets," who bought it for his teenage daughter. A few years later, she rear-ended someone and didn't have any insurance, so State Farm tried to go after me as the last person in their records with insurance. But that wasn't the car's fault, and I really liked that little car.

Funny story, yesterday I was dropping off a friend's car at their dealership. My wife was blocked in, so she took the Elantra. I'm standing outside of service and noticed the car and thought "That's a nice looking Elantra." without knowing it was her. That's how huge of a nerd Elantra owners can be.

I wouldn't mind owning one of these as a daily. I've always thought it was cool that in 2009 it still used mechanical throttle and an electronic distributor. The reason why I thought it was cool is because incase yall didn't know at this point, the majority of cars including my 05 Mazda moved to the coil on plug design and the throttle by wire design.

The car has a great story. Back in the 90's Hyundai made sports car called the Tiburon. Koreans kids started tuning them up and discovered these made pretty good platforms for tuners. People turned them into drift cars. They had nice stiff frames for a compact, good idea if you wanna keep all 4 wheels on ground when your sliding around. They took the frame off the Tiburon, made it a little longer for 4 doors, further modifications were made to suit FF and that's what they put under the old Elantras. Many years later they want to break into the american market. But then the economy tanked in S Korea. Hyundai had to cut costs. They bought a big pile of depreciated toyota engines and transmissions, started putting them in their new generation 3 Elantras. This worked out for Hyundai. The korean economy recovered and they went back to making their sub-par engines for the next generation. I would love to try the new Elantra N.

They are in the US since they came up with the exel in 1985-86. They are in Canada since 1983-84 and they sold the pony here from 1984 to 1987, which was never sold in the US. It's kinda like a chevette, but with a mistubishi engine, and they also sold the slightly more expensive stellar, think of it as a sedan chevette too. Both of these cars were rear wheels drive.
I bought a pony new in 1985 as a commuter car and it did the job pretty well until the rust get it. It has a manual 4 speed transmission and was one of the lowest priced car with the yugo and the lada 1200. I kept it 12 years and it has 250k km when I scraped it because it was falling apart. It didn't like the salt on the road here.
I also bought a 1995 lada niva because I loved the way it looked and it was a pretty robust, easy to work on car.
It was dirt cheap for a 4x4 and was with a manual transmission and transfer case. If I remember correctly, I paid 7k for it brand new. I sold it to a neighbour of mine and I believe it still on the road today. For those who don't know what it is, or what it's like to drive one, think of it as a 4x4 old school beetle, with more metal than plastic parts interior and, a way too large steering wheel.

I deliver 🍕 in a 09. Paid 3900 for 150k miles used in 2020. Got 200k no repairs yet just new tires, new timing belt at 200k (800 for a rubber belt water pump serpentine belt n 6 hours of labor) other than that I go to get my oil changed at 3500 and it's perfect come back at 5. Doesn't drive well above 70-75mph also reads about 3-4 mph faster if radars are correct. They're supposed to last 200 according to Google but someone on here claims a driving instructor has 800k on factory engine/tranny so I pray to God I can get half that. edit I have a gls, closer to 140k can't remember

In my opinion it looks 2004, just an extremely basic car in a nutshell.

@DJkirakira No, the Elantra is a compact car that competes against the Corolla and Civic.

Hyundai is korean and their build quality not as good as the Japanese (Toyota/Honda) and so they don't last as long as a Toyota/Honda. They tend to fall apart by the time they reach 100,000 miles

Not true. I used to think that way too, but it's not true. A lot of the ones from 2000-2015 or so last as long as any Toyota or Honda, if they are maintained. And, IMO, more fun to drive, since you're not driving a boring Japenese or American car.

My family had an '06 Santa Fe we dumped before 100k miles because it was falling apart. However, Hyundai and Kia have made major advances in their quality in the last five years or so. I'd have no problem cross-shopping a new one with Honda or Toyota.

Toyota is building absolute junk circa 2024. Broken turbos, cracking frames on trucks, premature rusting, tons of recalls and problems. They are not the Toyota of 20 years ago.

Yeah it freaked me out too when I bought this car but you get used to it. If the car gets super hot, you'll get a temperature warning light. In my case, my radiator fan stopped working so my car overheated. Fixed it by changing the cables then the fan worked again and no more overheating
