I know you’re going to hear a lot of stuff from people about Catalina’s as you post these videos. I don’t know what boat you currently have now. But here’s a few words. I have owned Catalina’s since I was 13. My first boat was a Catalina 8. I also had a 30 before the 350. They were all made very well and the fiberglass build was heavy. Frank Butler, the founder of the company, built the boats to a price point, which meant some parts like the through hulls were made with Marlon as opposed to the older bronze fittings. This made the boats lighter for shipping purposes and less expensive. Some of the cabinetry was made with plywood with veneers as opposed to solid teak. The benefits to this is that the company is still around, and you can still get parts for the boats. Many of the sailboat manufacturers from the 80’s and 90’s including Island Packet are gone. Or reincarnated with new owners. The newer Catalina’s are well made and there are thousands of Catalina owners around the world. If you have questions, there’s a customer service rep that you can call and get answers on how to properly maintain it. Also, the various Catalina owner associations are great places to get knowledge on each model and info on upgrades, etc. some things that people may not know is how much work goes into the building of each boat. The cabinets are hand built in their wood shop. The entire boat is put together by hand. One other thing if you do go to the Annapolis boat show which someone suggested...feel the edges inside the boat cabins. Most of the have hard or sharp edges. Now check out the Catalina. All the edges are rounded. Something that is important when you are sailing in rough seas. Anyway, there are also things to consider about the boats layout and I agree that large sleeping cabins are less important than stowage, etc. but those are individual tastes. Ok that’s all for now. Best wishes on your search!
I sure would like to see a Catalina 8! I bet that was a blast as a kiddo. Thanks for sharing your experiences with Catalina Yachts...I can't tell you how encouraging it is to hear about their quality - it seems like everyone who's ever owned one talks about the strength of construction that goes into Catalinas. I hope you stick around to see what sailboat we decide on. I'm sure we're going to need a lot of pointers! Thanks, again for watching and commenting :)
Yeah, the Catalina 400 is really about 41 feet and the 42mkII is a 43 ft sailboat. After being on both, they feel similar in the cockpit and on deck, but the 42 has much, much more storage and places for things like generator, washer, battery banks, etc... I've heard the hulls is different - the 42 being much stiffer but slower.
So I've watched this video numerous time and I'm still curious on the decision to take the 387 over the 400. What am I not seeing that you saw on your walk thru. Did it come down to price / condition? Plus T shirt ideas " This is my favorite ....." lol
Love the T-shirt idea, lol. Yes, it came down to what was on the market for what we wanted. There are some liveability drawbacks on the 400 that the 387 solved, but we would've taken the 400 if the right one was available at the time.
@@TheFosterJourney What are the livability drawbacks? I love the the layout but haven't been in one. Unfortunetly the wife will only tolerate looking at so many boats so I really have to dial in what we will look at. The Catalina 380/387 and the 42 are on our go shopping list.
@@MadMarv. The 400 is great. It's a noticeable size up from the 387. My minor critiques for liveability are (1) a less open cockpit, (2) limited headroom in the heads, (3) lack of dedicated shower, and (4) keel stepped mast.
Hello Matt and Family: nice boat did you look at Sails?, Not much head room is there? May I add some help? You may look at how Catalina builds there boats back then. Glueing the Deck to the Hull. Just helping. May want to go to Annapolis Boat show. God Bless.
Yeah, that aft cabin is cool being that wide, but that headroom is not good. I'd rather have a small cabin with more headroom, plus a garage or large lazarette for storage.
@@TheFosterJourney thank u for your response. I really want a Catalina but it seems like there are only a few on the west coast. I will continue my hunt.
“The two happiest days of your life is when you buy a boat and when you sell it” its plastic water coffin for you and your family”… tiny claustrophobic living quarters. No thanks. Also, with the hurricane’s been so unpredictable now even hitting the Pacific coast of California there is no safe place to keep a boat like that from being sucked up &smashed upside down through a home.

Hows this Catalina 400 different than the Catalina 42 mkII? I see the cabin differences, but size-wise, its called a 40, is it much smaller?

@@RVAdventuresTV Thx!
Great looking boat, roomy, wide, safe looking... what kind of engine?
I think this one was a Yanmar. Some of them are Westerbeke, which is pretty much a Kobota tractor engine.

So how did it sail . Can it hold 9 knots down a light current with 20 knots . At any reach
The 400 sails great! 9kts is a bit out of its normal cruising speed.

was looking at a 400 till i seen the 380 has a better comfort and capsize ratio.
Yep it does! It's a pretty strong little boat ⛵ Though those 400s feel a world larger.
What’s the asking price for this kind of boats? I’m in my quest myself but in the pacific side
The 400 is a great boat and you can find them for 80-120k in good condition. 100-150k in great condition.
