I couldn't be more jealous of his location and equipment. Backhoe, quad, dirt bike, hundreds of acres of open land. Heaven.
Thanks for watching!

Man that looked like a ton of work, Pete. Makes those little tops we did look like child's play. Well done, they look great!
Thanks so much, Brad! That was fun building with ya in Nashville. I actually just finished an outdoor kitchen with tops using the dry sanding technique and $6 quikrete. I actually like them more then the wet polished tops in this video. Cheers!

Nice job, I hope to have the courage to try this myself soon!
@@DIYPETE I got the inspiration to do this from a picture on Pinterest. That was a more rugged looking concrete top so I assume the cheaper concrete mix and dry sanding will make that look. The polished look did not impress me, but the way you worked did. Thank you !
Try buying some microballoons and mixing that in with your concrete. Know as micro balloons or micro spheres from 3M or other suppliers.
Making a concrete hearth for a new stove today. Helpful video. All the best from Ireland
I've been thinking of doing this for quit a while now, but you now gave me the confidence I needed to get started. Great job!👍🏾
Wow! Thank you so much for this video - loved that you were direct and to the point while talking, and the steps were all so perfectly explained. This is my go to video for when I attempt to make my own concrete tops!
Great to hear, Christy. Thank you for watching! Here is another video I did on concrete tops that shows an even easier method without having to use a wet polisher. The process is done for less money and in a quicker timeframe without having to polish ( using an orbital sander instead ). Anyhow, just thought I'd share the link in case that is helpful for your project. Cheers! ua-cam.com/video/A0Pd4o8gjfM/v-deo.html
Great video love the counter top im thinking about making 1 myself...
So nice to see a countertop that defies the norm.
Thanks for watching!
This video was very helpful, I watched it multiple times for each stage. I copied everything you did to a T and my counters came out amazingly.
Cheers mate
Great to hear JP, nice work!
Beautiful and amazing work! My husband has to do this when we buy our house I love it's just so rustic and reminds me of Mexico! Thanks for the video!
Awesome!
Alright I'm never gonna say I'm a skilled craftsmen after watching this video. Geez This dude's attention to detail and patience is amazing.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the video, it was super informative. I am a concrete form carpenter/finisher, and I’ve done an insane amount of sack and patching. Which is just filling holes and smoothing out the surface. When you were patching holes(which you always have to do) I’d recommend using a tile float, and mix a heavy wet sludge of Portland cement/water/moose milk. Get your slab wet and you can really push the mix into the holes with the float. And you can cover the whole slab insuring you don’t miss anything. You can even use the float to get off some of the excess. Then wait and polish like you did. Again, thank you for the video, I’ve only done big commercial projects, so it was nice to watch something with a prettier outcome.
Thank you so much Pete, combined this with your "How to make DIY kitchen cabinets" and redid my kitchen, looks amazing. This week of course also then made a concrete counter Butcher's block and two side tables, and similarly came out great. Thanks again so much
Hi Adrian! I'm impressed, nice work! Congrats on the remodel and enjoy that new kitchen!
men this is amazing! congrats...you got a Fan from Australia!
thanks!
That was wild dude. Kept us watching the whole time!
Thanks!
Hey Pete, the kitchen plate looks very cool. Good job! Best regards Frank
Waav first time I see how can we get the perfect concrete kitchen slabs with your amazing work. That's really great. All your working technics are awesome. Very impressive.🙏😍
Thank you very much
Wow. What a great job! Thanks for making this!
Thanks!
Well done.I learned recently using liquid soap on your finger tip works much better than soap water or water .
Pete. You're my new hero! Amazing work. You did a brilliant job. Thanks so much for this inspiring video!
Thanks so much for watching Dawn! Hope all is well!
Those counter tops look amazing!! It's a lot more work than I was expecting, but I'm sure it's worth it.
And now I want to move to beautiful Montana!
Thanks for watching!
This actually looks like something I can do! I'm most nervous about mixing the concrete to the right consistency.
Thanks for watching!
One of the best DIY step-by-step instructional videos I've ever seen. Thank you for all your hard and thoughtful work.
Thanks!
Great video! Very practical. You’ve obviously got a high skill set. Thanks also for your professional approach. Sometimes others go one and on about their personal/ private lives, not you. Pure information and very practical. Good on you!
Looking into building a house, definitely going the route of polished and stained concrete floors and more than likely a concrete counter and island combo. Good look and not very expensive. Thanks for the tutorial.
Awesome!
I could have used this a few months ago!... P.S. The omega sealer from the concrete countertop institute is awesome. It only comes in low sheen but they told me I could use an automotive polish like Maguire's to polish it to a semi gloss finish, which I did. Plus, the polish adds just another layer of protection to the sealer, although it doesn't really need it. Thank You Pete!
Hey Dan! Awesome to hear about your positive experiences with the Omega sealer. Got some in the other day and can't wait to try it out!!
carnauba wax will seal concrete and is edible. You can find it easily in the car esthetic section of big household stores.
We have a backwards shirt alert at 21:58. Great work Pete. Love your videos.
haha! good eyes, yeah I'm not sure how that happened haha. Thanks man and have a good one!
This was a great video. I realized concrete counters are not for me, but this video helped me see what is involved in doing this correctly.
The counters look fantastic and I found the pace of your instruction informative and clear without being patronizing, great job!
Thanks so much!
😮 you made it look so easy. I’d probably takes me months 😆
I've watched a few of your videos now and after hearing you say about a way to seal the counter tops I thought which I suggest. Have you ever thought of using a clear epoxy resin to the completed installation of the counter tops. I only suggest this as I just feel that this would it would give you a really strong cover coat to the concrete which would not only let the full effect of the top show through but would possibly save further treatments in the years there after. Love the work that you have done so far that I have seen you do
Hey Steve! I know some folks do use epoxy. It would certainly protect it from stains. It takes a little bit away from the natural stone look, but also can really shine it up. I am going to be using Omega sealer on some future projects, which is a very very good sealer that I just started testing recently. Cheers!
This is one of the best instructional videos I’ve ever seen on UA-cam. Great job.
Thanks for watching, Sam!
Great video Pete; this is a project I’ve been wanting to do for some time now. Bonus point for having a bottle of Lagavulin in the background.
Thanks for watching! Great to hear from a fellow Scotch connoisseur!
To the 'Naysayers' and those dubious about how well a concrete top will hold up - We did this in our kitchen 20 years ago, and it still looks fantastic today!
Great to hear your experiences with concrete countertops over the years!
@Seriously! How? I actually had my doubts. concrete is durable but chips easy imho so yes, I had my doubts. The stronger mixtures are probably even better for kitchen, but I want these in my bathroom :-)
@@oldwortex5818 that were my doubts as well. Don't know if it might be a good idea to use fiber reinforced concrete for this exact reason. By the way DIY PETE I really felt satisfied by the way you took care not to mess the mold with excess silicone by taping all corners below and above seams. Congrats man!
Glen & Friends Cooking It’s not their durability I question, it’s their horrifically drab Soviet Union-style appearance.
Bet you have to power wash them too. That cement soaks and over time all the dirt and what not gets into it. It can't be no different than a cement slab outside just getting walked on. It gets dirty.
A close-up view of the finished product would have been a nice end to this video. After the time and effort it would have been neat to see a little more of the results. Thanks for the great step-by-step. A very helpful video, and an enjoyable presentation. Thank you.
Thanks Kevin! I'll have to do more closeups in the future. Cheers!
B Bennett Could you explain why they suck?
B Bennett would you mind explaining why they suck? I have some decisions to make and I’m sure others would also find it interesting. Thanks!
B Dean Do you mind explaining your thought process? I had this type of countertop in the house I rented and had zero issues
Defintely appreciate your attention to detail and reflection on small things that new crafters may have trouble with!
Thanks Austin!
Pete, you do an OUTSTANDING job in both your subject projects and in the production of your videos. I am impressed! Thank you.
Thanks so much Declan!
"Didn't have a step bit, so I grabbed the plasma cutter" Best laugh of my day! Thanks for the great video Pete
Ha thanks! Yeah I couldn't find it that day :) Cheers
Famous last words for some less talented folks
Ok, I just finished mine and although they are smooth, I chose to keep all the flaws. I wish I could post a picture. I love this! Thank you for your helpful tips!
Hi Amanda! Congrats on completing them :) Would love to see how they turned out. Project photos can be posted to the facebook page or feel free to email them. The contact info can be found here: www.diypete.com/contact/ Thanks for taking action and building! Cheers
Awesome DIY vid!!
Your breakdowns, details and tips are very clear and concise. Quite impressive!
Thanks Billy!
Professionally done, awesome and very helpful. I did my kitchen counter with just a normal concrete house profile process, still unfinished.
Great work Ralph!
Good to see all the love for DIY concrete tops, and for DIY Pete. Nice job, hard to argue with your results. Only thing Id do is drop that rebar and run AR fiber throughout ;) [your polisher will burn off any exposed fibers] OH, I liked the plasma cuttin' in the kitchen! Cut up dinner while you're at it
Thanks for watching and for the info! Cheers!
Not true! Fiberglass all the way through is a mistake, unless you want to see the fibers, and is not needed with rebar. Fiber just on bottom side works best. You will see the fibers regardless of polishing. This video was excellent and showed the right way to do it.
:) DIY pete does do a great job on all his projects, I enjoy watching the guy. As far as The fibers and rebar Im guessing you do this for a living and have a bunch of experience, I wont argue with you. Cheers mate!
No sign of fiber in ours, and it's fiber in 100% of the mix.
There are many types of fiber, many people don't understand that. If the fibers show then it is too large a fiber. Sounds like you used the right stuff. The other thing thats commonly ignored is the term 'AR' or alkaline resistant. Fiber with dissolve (as soon as 30 days after the pour) if not designated 'AR'

Learning new things haha!
Me too! Lol! It looks much more complicated than I was hoping
Awesome! This is exactly what I was looking for to do in my future house. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
That’s beautiful, you did a lot of work, a whole lot more than you can see people doing on UA-cam installing this counter by polishing it and all.
Thanks for watching
I don't suppose you could sent me a higher res shot of the silicon/concrete mix for the seam? I'm doing something similar soon, and wasn't sure how to combine the two well.
Thanks.
Hey Colum! All the mix is for the silicon is white 100% silicon -- and some quikrete charcoal liquid pigment. Mix it up for a minute and it will mix in well. You can also use dark grey paint and simply mix it until it gets to about the right color. It isn't 100% the exact color, but looks pretty close!
Great video Pete thanks. Awesome explanation without any waffling. Can I suggest that the pigment for the concrete should be weighed so that you get a consistent colour through all mixes. Also you can use a hammer drill (with no drill bit obviously) to get air pockets out by holding it on the formwork for your concrete, acting like a mini concrete vibrator.
Thanks Andrew! Great to hear from you and I'm always open to hearing ideas and feedback. Thanks for the ideas and suggestions! I do from time to time use a reciprocating saw without a blade and other tools, but I haven't tried a hammer drill on it yet. Sounds like it would work great! I do have a vibrating table and pencil concrete vibrator, but don't typically use them in the videos since I like to show they can be made without having all the expensive specialty tools. But the idea for a hammer drill is great! And weighing pigment is great! Thanks!
U must knw evrything...il hav to remembr that.
Excellent video. Your descriptions about what you were doing and why are awesome. The one thing I might do differently would be to use an edger on the concrete while it is still wet, as it would save a lot of sanding time and I hate sanding.
Very detailed information. I appreciate your actual step by step instructions. Very helpful!
Dude was your yard used as the default background pic in Windows XP?
Hey Andrew! It was definitely green in the springtime :) I can see it resembles the old XP desktop, I used to have it! Cheers
lol - no doubt - beautiful.
Definitely a grassy knoll 🤔
Good catch dude
lmao. i see what you mean!
Everything’s fine in Edinburgh, take care Charlie
That is alot of work, and detailed work at that. If you're up to the task, your video is great instruction. The finished project looks great!!
Thanks!
Thank you for the dedication in the video. It will be really helpful for my art project (concrete totem).
Thanks and good luck with the totem pole!
Wow emaizing
Thank you for watching Akhmad!
Your kitchen looks awesome with the new countertops Live elk for happy hour entertainment is cool too. Great video. Enjoy MT. Great place and great people.
Random tip. When applying silicon put dish detergent in the water, silicon don't stick to detergent. In other applications you can put a bead of silicon on then spay with the detergent water and wipe away with a finger. the surface that contacted the silicon before you spay will be the only place it can stick. Gives you a easy clean finish.
Thanks so much!!
I did that once with a coloured detergent and the dye leached into the silicone.
Now I use a clear detergent.
Cheers.
Or you can use alcohol 😁
I use denatured alcohol
I've always used 100% grass-fed sheep's vomit, a little hard to find but works better than anything else.
Thanks so much for this, worked in concrete for years and have always wanted to do this. Thanks for taking out the guess work for me
Awesome!
Had a blast watching this! Killer job.
Pete when are you visiting NJ my countertops can use a upgrade lol
Wish I could build all sorts of countertops around the country! :) So little time... So many counters...
Do you have any videos with embedded items in the counter top? Have you ever used powdered silver embedded in the counter top? It is germicidal. Have to done a video with a counter top with built in slope for a dish rack, so it will drain? What do you think it cost in materials. Thanks . Well done video . Your a good teacher
Hi! I've done quite a few embedded items, a few on camera. Here are some vids: Crushed Glass: ua-cam.com/video/o2ESUL98Gag/v-deo.html , Agate: ua-cam.com/video/7xqG08jkXA4/v-deo.html - Metal: ua-cam.com/video/BygJGz3TC3o/v-deo.html - I have not done a video on a dish rack etc. Cheers!
I thought that was an excellent how-to video. Good work. I used to 'float' counter tops for tile, so I appreciate all the work.
Glad it was helpful!
Because of this video I decided to tackle my own concrete countertops. After only one minor setback (repoured one piece that was only 2 bags of concrete, no big deal) they turned out awesome! Thank you so much for the video, it helped out tremendously!
Great to hear, thanks for sharing!
What state are you in? It's absolutely gorgeous out there 😍
Ariel Glatz not as gorgeous as you!

Does the concrete have an odor?
Hi! Concrete counters do not have an odor.
With such amount of work, this one certainly still have some sweat odor.
smells like concrete
Excellent job! Unbelievable attention to the details, too! You even warned us to have a trash can handy when you removed the tape and you told us which finger you used to smooth out the silicone! That's my kind of man! Thanks a lot and may GOD bless you! Nice location, too!
Thank so much! I hope you are having a great weekend :)
This is exactly what I been wanting for ever! 😍
Thanks!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make such a detailed and interesting video.

Thanks so much Mike! Hope all is well
