  • Recently, I switched my rooftop tent from the iKamper Skycamp 2.0 to the Roofnest Falcon XL.
In this video, I explain why.

I still like my ikamper, the most wonderful thing about ikamper is during a wonderful storm you have the ability to keep the sides open and the skylight open with the waterproof windows...just love seeing the lightning and colors of a storm

Well demonstrated and explained as always. I really really like this style of RTT...despite being more expensive than conventional RTTs, this slim clamshell design is the only type I would consider putting on my car. I love that it has integrated channels around the sides and the ability to mount stuff on top...that would be a crucial factor for my compact rig. Maybe one day I'll finally be sleeping up there on my roof! :-) I hope to get a closer look at yours soon!

softroadingthewest yeah this design definitely has many benefits, especially for the type of camping/off-roading you like to do 👍. I definitely see one of these in your future 😉

Good points on the Falcon...it's strongest point is the ability to carry stuff on top using the racks and T-slot rails. However, not being able to store your bedding for two people and the ladder means all that needs to be stored in the rig and you have the chance of forgetting the ladder or sleeping gear behind. I also find the roominess of the iKamper to be ideal when the weather gets wet/cold etc and you want a place to chill, play a card game, draw, read , etc. You can do that more comfortably in king sized iKamper. Nice informative comparison between the two overall-thank you

Actually there is a way around this. You fold the mattress halfway back tuck it into the back part of the wedge. Then you put your sleeping bags and pillows on the wide end along with your pillows.

I kinda like the ikamper more, just due to the fact that I'm able to mount it on my 4runner and it tucks up nicely. As well as the window above, always great to have it open on a clear night and see the milky way! I keep my stuff outside so no issue with garages but i understand your decision! Great vid 👌

You described many of the same reasons I went with a clam shell type tent. I have limited clearance in my garage and needed a slim profile to be able to park in the garage. I can leave my bedding in my tent and love the convince of that set up. I went with the Camp King RTT and really love it. Thanks for sharing.

I think one of the biggest advantage of this style pop-up tent is the smaller footprint once fully deployed. it just takes up the space of the vehicle it's on whereas the ikamper and other foldout tents occupies the area next to the vehicle.

    Hi Edward,
Do you have any concerns with the gas struts being on the outside of the module, exposed to all weather conditions being that they are a critical part in these roof tent designs ?
Gas struts generally don't like being exposed to the elements over the longterm.

  • @monsignorotarpaigh9297

I've been researching RTTs for a year. For me, trading space and storage for a 1 minute savings of set up time just doesn't pencil. CVT and iKamper are both insanely overpriced! I just don't see their value. I appreciate your videos and this made me feel much better about my choice to go with another company where I'll get a lot more bang for the buck.

Thank you for the good review. We`re currently in the process of selecting a hard-shell RTT to replace our old soft/folding one. Some comments on your comparison:
    - Price: I think it would have been better if you`d compared the price of the cheaper Skycamp Mini to the Roofnest Falcon as they are more similar in size
    - Moving around the vehicle after setting up the tent: you could have just slide up the ladder on the Skycamp and leave the tent unfolded to move the car a little bit
    - At least in Europe there are places where you are allowed to use a RTT that doesn`t use more space than your car like the Roofnest whereas a tent like the Skycamp would not be allowed.
Hope you don`t mind my suggestions, other than that it`s a really helpful video. After looking at the Eezie Awn Stealth, Alu Cab 3.1, Bush Company Alpha and the Roofnest, we went for the Skycamp Mini 3.0. We can leave our sleeping bags in there, have more space and less weight to carry.

  • @DonegalOverlanding

The Roofnest is so bad its laughable. I had one and sold it in 3 weeks. Truly the worst tent ever. They're sold under the Tentbox name in the UK. In fact they're sold all over the world under different names. You cannot store any bedding in this roof tent, its not tall enough. The gas struts are so cheap they start rattling after a few hundred km, the back door doesn't close at the bottom, no zipper, no velcro, just a little weighted bar which lifts up in windy weather and that ice cold wind blows right onto your head. Its got a membrane stuck to the canvas meaning its not breathable, its a condensation hell.

I regret not bugging you some during the campout on the Alvord, to get a closer look at the tent. The narrower Falcon might be a good option for my daughter's Nissan Pathfinder down the road.
In noticed when you opened it, there was a good amount of suction as it tried to fill it's lung as it opened. And again, a little "poofy" as you were drawing it closed. I usually drop my Maggiolina Airtop in the front first as I completely close the front window, and both sides to keep dust and water from getting in during travel. I leave the rear window open half way to help facilitate air into and out of the tent as I open/close it. Seems to help speed up the opening, and reduce the "poof" of the tent when closing.
I really like the slots down the sides of the tent, as it would allow for mounting all kinds of cool stuff to it. The rack on top would be good for your SUPs if you didn't want to have to inflate them each time you used them. My wife and daughter fill theirs at home with the shop compressor, and then use my truck to haul them to the lake/river and back.
    Great functioning tent!

    • @KrokemOutdoors
      @KrokemOutdoors  4 роки тому +1

C_INSAYN good tips! I do try to keep most of the windows closed, with a slight opening to let air travel. This is because in case we we have to open up the tent while raining, nothing gets wet inside. We also bought a cordless inflator for the SUP’s, which I’m hoping will facilitate the inflation, but I like your pre-inflation idea!

Overall, it can’t be faster than ikamper. After setup you have to put all your bedding into the clamshell then inflated the mattress. Then you have to pull all your stuff out and deflate the mattress. Overall it takes way more time. Also if you had the ikamper you could buy the Hest mattress and it’s the most comfortable mattress on the market and don’t require air inflation. It also blows away that Exped in comfort. Even the ikamper X-Cover is faster to setup than having to put all your bedding inside and inflate/deflate.

So would it be even possible to keep the lower rack system and have the falcon xl hang off the rear instead of over the cab? Like the tent but wanted to keep a low rack system.

on the truck roof is a Frontrunner outfitters slimline rack, and on the bed is the Leitner Designs bedrack

How does it compare to the iKamper in terms of wind? Seems like the iKamper has thicker lining on the outside and would fare better in 30 mph or greater conditions. As always, thanks for the vids.

@david_spiegelman I’ve been in a few camps where the winds were very high (see my recent alvord desert meetup video), and the tent has done great so far

Hi Edward! Not sure if you plan to keep this with your Rebel but do you think you can comfortably sleep 2 adults and a 7 yo? Or would the iKamper SkyCamp 2.0 be better for a family of 3?

This is awesome! Thanks for the review. I've been tempted but reluctant to go roofnest and such due to the high cost, but we do camp a LOT, so I'm thinking this would be a great investment.
Just curious, your replacement inflatable mattress, did you remove the roofnest provided mattress for yours, or did you place your inflatable mattress on top of roofnest's mattress?

    • @KrokemOutdoors
      @KrokemOutdoors  3 роки тому +1

I removed the mattress that came with the Roofnest . The mattress is a little thicker, but packs thinner when deflated, which also helps the tent close more easily.

how tall are you? from all the videos I've watched nobody shows just how room is in these; and they look very compact. honestly doesn't look like you'd have much room in there for anything other than you and somebody else.
