You are amazing for reading all of these, seeing your thoughts on all these books I know how challenging it was and geeze you are so awesome to read and review these for us. I'm so shocked by some of these that were chosen as winners its just crazy 😳 most of these winners are so problematic. Thank you for a great video and putting so much work in for us!
"I didn't hate this one when I read it but the more I think about it, the more I hate it" - RELATABLE 😹 The Ibram X Kendi version of Stamped from the Beginning is one my all time favs so definitely recommend checking it out!!
As soon as I saw Rachel Hollis on your list, I thought “oh no”. Maintenance Phase podcast did a 2-part episode on her. It was wild! Funny commentating but infuriating info about Rachel.
Hmm, I've never been interested in Brene Brown because I'm also not a big fan of self-help books. Thanks for joining this project and suffering with us!
I'm back (i kept being interrupted) but I just finished the last bit of your video. I feel like your picks were so varied it was interesting seeing what won for non fiction. I also feel the more I think about it the more I hate it is me with so books sometimes 😂
i can totally understand you not wanting to read mcnamara’s book. it’s devastating. the main reason i read it was that i was fascinated by her as a researcher and her relationship with patton oswalt. she spoke about how she became involved in the genre, and the more i learnt about her the more relatable she became to me, and that was all before her death, let alone when it was announced that they’d caught the guy. you can read about the crimes anywhere, but michelle’s book was unique in that in how much of herself went into it. i remember patton’s statement after the man was arrested - “you got him michelle”. her writing was exemplary, she was such a driven. patton’s forward to the book is also brilliant. anyway, no real reason to share this, the subject matter is soul crushing, but the writing is wonderfull and it’s one of of the few books that deserved winning anything, overall and even in your category - hollis, brene brown & singh would have been enough to send me into a pit of despair. azari is just cringe & awkward
Wow you had such a tough section!! This was amazing, and I’m so impressed! Listening to your journey was very interesting and I am grateful for you to be reading things so I don’t have to 😂
Hi! New here but figured since I read both versions of Stamped, I'd chime in. Kendi's original is super serious in tone and at least in the context of this project, I think it would have been a tough thing to read. While I haven't read Fear and I get your criticism on it from a non-American POV (we like our acronyms over here) but if part of why you were tentative going into that book is because you don't like Trump then be warned that there are a lot of people like Trump in history that show up in Stamped From The Beginning. I recommend reading it in chunks, which Kendi has kindly divided the book nicely for it. Take a few days off and read something light or not at all. I did not do that and I spent the better part of a month after being too mad at the world to read anything else and having to work my way back to reading by burning through every middle grade and children's book I had. Reading Reynolds' remix months later was like putting a balm on a burn; the negative emotions it evoked were more manageable and the tone overall was more hopeful than Kendi's original. I think context of reading is important too and being stressed out from a long list of books and a deadline wouldn't be the best context to start reading such a heavy book as Stamped From the Beginning, I think you would get far more out of it to be able to read it at leisure and when you feel in the right headspace for it. I also applaud your patience and fortitude to get through that Rachael Hollis book. I've never read it or considered doing so simply because I become irrationally annoyed just seeing the cover. And that was before I knew how problematic she is! So yes, a case of judging a book by its cover but I think you'll agree that I was right to lol
🇺🇸 viewer here - the Bob Woodward book is the first in his Tr*mp ‘trilogy’ and the erraticness of the structure reflects how the majority of the country felt during the first part of his term. Agree or not, it felt like waking up everyday to see what chaos was on the agenda and there was quite a bit of personnel turnover throughout the term in office. 1/?
2/? - Woodward also is of the old-school in American political reporting where they were required by the Fairness Doctrine to present both/all sides with equal time. (think BBCish in ‘other books are available’ in vibe)
I am honestly amazed you read any of Fear! I don’t think I could read a book about Trump, even if it was absolutely ripping into him! It really seemed like this video exhausted you. This was such an amazing project, I think you did an incredible job!
This is a fun project to watch. Thanks for suffering for our entertainment 😂 The only one of these I've read is the Hamilton one, which I enjoyed. I want to read the Anthropocene Reviewed. I used to listen to his podcast by the same name. I didn't have The Austistic Brain on my radar before, but it sounds like an interesting read
oof I was definitely getting creepy guy vibes just from the first update on Modern Romance! 😬 also I'm an American and I don't even get that reference bc I am not a sports American 😂 you're actually making me curious about Atlas of the Heart! I've been curious about Brown before but never picked one of hers up I've liked some of Lilly Singh's content in the past but I feel like with the whole girl-boss version of feminism and how many problems we're realizing it has, her book probably didn't age well.... I think Fear would make me way too angry so I've never been interested in it, but one of the additional reasons is that I've also heard people talk about how neutral the tone of the book is and.......I don't like that for something like this I really loved The Anthropocene Reviewed and Stamped so I'm glad you at least liked them! I think it helps that I have a lot of similar anxieties as John Green 😅 and I read the audio for Stamped which is narrated brilliantly by Jason Reynolds so that probably helped my experience
oh you’ve prob been told this enough already, but republican = liberal national party - these are all the right wing conservatives - these liberals are capital L Liberals democrats = labor party - small l liberals - left wing - these are the ones the right wingers refer to as lefty socialists/communists.
I'm sorry it caused you so much panic but I actually find it kind of great you read the Jenny Lawson and hated it because Rachel said it was one of the only Humor books that actually made her laugh! Also, Brené Brown is interesting because her background is in qualitative research and she still has that kind of research-y feel to her work but for like, 10+ years she's had kind of a huge presence in business settings and her company is in the self help business space and it's like... Is this just self help with the veneer of scientific respectability???
thanks for putting so much effort into this project. yours is probably the broadest category considering all of the subcategories! rachel hollis is just a rubbish self promoter. her “perfect life” facade has fallen over and there was some unfortunate footage of her being told her wealthy lifestyle was making her unrelatable and her yelling that she didn’t want to be relatable, she was rich! brent brown is pretty much the same but better presentation. she can be very judgemental and problematic when she lets her guard down. all of these people are just dishing up the same stuff.
I am going through all the videos and subscribing! so nice to see so many booktuners I didn´t know before
I hope you've been enjoying them all!

Thank you so much! That's so kind of you ❤️ And yes, definitely some problematic winners for sure-across all the categories.

Thank you for joining us! I’m so excited to see how this nonfiction category goes 💖

You're so welcome 😂
Your cat is so cute 😍
I'm glad you were able to take breaks. I did the same with my heavy reads because they can be a lot!
yes!! you did it and did a great job! you had a lot of hard books. great job!
Thanks Alex!

OMG Percy’s purring, so cute
Adorable
What a great project, and we’ll done on not putting yourself through the Trump book or the original one it replaced.

thanks for being a part of this project. you definitely had the densest category in terms of subject matter.
The Hamilton book is so fun!
Such a cool read!
