      I was surprised how difficult that they were to split because of how nice/straight grain they were.

    Large dry ash rounds with a little bit of twist to the grain or even small to moderate knots can be extremely tough to split. Only round I ever broke the splitter on was dry ash. Slang for ripping the rounds with a chiansaw is noodling, you get the rounds themselves from crosscutting (across the grain).

    Mike has real good aim and much of a man. I wold have had to roll it out of the truck on to the splitter to get it in half.

    Mike and Joe,
    For those larger rounds you should just chop along the edges and work toward the middle. If you can’t get them to split down the middle.

    • @npettengill2000
      @npettengill2000 5 років тому

      Right but rather than wasting gas and hits with the mail once you know it’s not going to split you split from the outside and in 4 whacks you can have a manageable size. Different strokes for different folks

      I like a very short round or no round for hand splitting. If I put these on top of each other the surface would be too high and I wouldn't get maximum pressure at the splitting head.

    This could be alot easier... All you need is a 3lb axe and a sledge hammer. Get the axe in at the edge of one of the rounds and hit it maybe 5 times and she should split no problem. I've used this method on 3ft rounds of red oak and it works like a dream, plus you dont run out of breath!

      Also Joe wanted to tell you I really enjoy your videos. I myself work a full-time job and do tree work and firewood on the side. I really enjoy the get er done attitude and working with what you have to do work. It's easy for people to speculate on different things in the wood game but as a hard working self-proclaimed workaholic I appreciate what you do. I don't have all the latest and greatest but I get it done solo with what I've got. I use an old Stihl 041 Av and a old 86 F250 and love every bit of it! I just get the greatest satisfaction putting my old equipment most people would view as junk, to a hard days work. I too find myself getting pretty creative sometimes managing large rounds, but like you I always get it done!

      When I can't the large ones to crack I'll drive a wedge or two and normally after that I can go back to the maul. I had a few maple rounds yesterday too large to roll into my trailer and drove one wedge enough to get another wedge in line with it and then alternate hits, worked out well
