    Skin some potatoes.
    Bring them to a boil in water.
    Remove the potatoes then let the water/starch Mixture cool.
    Put in a spray bottle.
    Spray over the hat.

    Hi! great informational video. Do you have an idea how I could modify a hat base to make a larger felt brim? I need to make a really big, round crown, stiff brim hat for a costume! 😀 thanks 🙏🏻

    Can you tell me where I can get the correct shellac? This would help me do wonders when re-furbishing felt hats.

    I'd like to know more about the shellac as well. I tried the hairspray trick and it worked but not as well as I'd hoped.

      Ivanna Echeverria Hi, probably too late now but simply steam (a kettle is fine) your brim then press it down onto a flat surface with your hand. until you get the shape you want.

    Hi, I am Josh C.T. , I purchased some wool and dyed it black/brown. I want to felt a hat and have the shrunken size fit me. SO I made a form to soap and felt it on. How much does it shrink? I do not want it to be to small.

      It depends on the way you put the Felt but like 3 centimeters

    • @boudicasheritage9581
      @boudicasheritage9581 3 роки тому

      It depends on how much time you spend felting the wool and how hard but basically I apply around a 33% shrinkage allowance to mine. Measure your head and keep measuring the hat brim you are shrinking

    Your hat shellac science is not accurate. The shellac is the actual stiffener. It coats and soaks deep into the felt and hardens. The shellac is a very hard resilient material that comes from the lac beetle. It is then mixed with starches that stiffens or hardens the felt. If you look at felt under a microscope after the shellac mixture dries you’ll notice the felt it surrounded by the shellac/starch and have a crystalline texture.

    How do you make shellac?

    • @lisawintler-cox1641
      @lisawintler-cox1641 7 років тому

      First, you get over the fact it's essentially bug poop.
      You get shellac flakes or drops and dilute them in alcohol (ethanol?). You get the flakes from woodworking places or Home Depot (probably has a lot of additives). There are different colors of Shellac and grades. On a black hat it might not matter, but you'd have to be a villain of the movie (who works in the sun in a black hat?!).

      @@lisawintler-cox1641 in what measures do you dilute them?

  • @MrRyGuy0369
    @MrRyGuy0369 6 років тому +3

    Just use polyurethane. Works better and you don't need to iron it

    • @marinabio2022
      @marinabio2022 4 роки тому

      That's for dilute the shellac? Isn't it toxic I'm trying to stiffen felt shoes

    • @MrRyGuy0369
      @MrRyGuy0369 4 роки тому

      @@marinabio2022 Nope its not toxic as long as you let the poly dry completely before you wear them. Use very little as too much will make them hard as a rock.
