- The Yellowbirds of Northeast Airlines, one of the few regional carriers I never got to ride on.
But they are legendary and made a mark in their short life of the jet age.
Check out what was once Northeast Airlines!
On some of these videos I can almost smell the the jet fuel! My dad flew F227,DC9,B727.....As an 8 year old he took me to work 1 day to sit in jump seat on DC9 ,we flew from Logan to NY....never forget, rest easy Capt.Richard O Hill SR
and the DC 3 and DC 6 (but, pre-YellowBird)
wonderful compilation @Starboard76
Best NEA video in existence. My Dad started there as an DC-6 FE in 1966 then 727 copilot until Delta.
Thanks so much for this video. I was still a kid in the late 1960's when the radio commercials came on with that catchy tune. I hadn't flown yet, so I wasn't sure about it. I just remember Northeast Yellow-birds, da da dot da, etc. It was memorable, and got me interested in flying.
thank you so much remembering my early years flying to fll from kennedy 1970 1st flight was on the yellowbird till the merger i was 7 years old in 1970
Howdy!
My grandfather was the CEO of Northeast airlines before the 1972 merge with Delta airlines. My name is Jason. My grandfather is George B Storer. My father and I were watching this video as a way to remember grandpa. I'd like to thank you for the beautiful pictures and footage of the old yellowbirds. Means a lot to my family, thank you.
Sincerely,
Jason Storer
Hi Jason, it is my pleasure to have you and your dad to view and comment on my work on this one video. You’ll be happy to know that additional NE footage his since been acquired as Im continually amid my search for original jet footage. Problem is it’ll be at least a year or two to make the cut.
Happy to have shared what I have.
***wink wink** I just activated the '$$$ Thanks$$$' link on my videos, so make GrandPa Storer Proud, Jason!
@@Starboard76 I will definitly be sure to watch and comment on those vids! I'm 19 but my grandpa has had a serious impact on the way I view life, and my friends have always been cheerful whenever I mention my family history. They don't see me as a super popular rich kid which I'm proud of. They just see me as a kid with a legacy. Your content really makes me smile my friend!

I remember my Dad mentioning your Grandfather, My dad was a little disappointed with the merger, but it had to happen, He worked at Montpelier VT, Burlington Vt, Boston, Miami, and Tampa. He liked Delta, but Northeast was his love.
Amazing that I can across this video. As a very young boy growing up in the Bangor area, one of my first memories as a kid was my father pointing out one of the "Yellow Birds" at the Bangor International Airport. Oddly, it is one of my earliest memories. I suppose it sticks in my mind as a little kid because I could not understand why I was seeing an airplane and my father was telling me it was a "bird". I was barely old enough to even know my colors back then. Thanks for posting.
Very cool!
Spotted a VC-10 and a F27. Very nice work. Thanks
My Dad was with NE forever, When I was born in 1952 on my Birth Certificate its list his job as Station Manager with Northeast. He had been there I believe for 8 years, I could be wrong on that. He went through the merger with Delta, tho his passion was the Yellow Birds, I flew on every type of plane they had, I remember him telling me that NE was just Howard Hughes play toy. He had over 40 years when he retired, and he loved every minute of it. He would tell me find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life, I was lucky and did just that.
Beautiful history! That advice is the wisest of all and most accurate!
Grandson of George B Storer here, My dad was very heartfelt about this comment and he said that George would be very happy to hear about this. I'm 19, but I wish I grew up in the 60's so I could fly on grandpas planes.
My first plane ride probably 1967 (6 yrs old?). Boston to NYC. I remember the radio ad that used "Yellow Bird, High up in Banana Tree" for its jingle.
Another gem in the treasure chest that is Starboard76
Actually Northeast did order L1011’s, but never took delivery. They were short money and merged with Delta. Not sure if Delta actually took the L10’s originally ordered by Northeast. and Northeast was not a “Regional” but was considered a “Trunk” carrier, albeit the smallest of the 11 trunks. They flew from Boston, New York, Philadelphia to Florida, from Manchester NH to Chicago, and from Miami to Los Angeles, plus routes to Bermuda and the Bahamas, among other destinations. Amelia Earhart was also involved in their start up.
yes i flew on L1011 and whisper jets on delta
IMHO nothing tops the CV880 in the Yellowbird livery! It was designed by Raymond Loewy, who also designed TWA and Air Force One liveries. Love to see a Delta retrojet with the NE logo!
Yeah, that'd be way cool!
Those birds bring back some great plane spotting memories for me in the 60's. Also the National Sun King.
Starboard, you;ve done it again with an awesome video of one of top 4 airlines (JM,BW,NE) that are part of my heart. One of my best NE memories was riding my bike as a 13 yr old out to the Fort Lauderdale airport every night where after the 880 would come in from JFK the gate agent would allow me to get on the 880 (in its forward first class lounge, yes the 880 had one !) and eat the leftover filets. Imagine that happening today ? I don't think so! Now you have one more airline in my heart to do a video on and that is Trans Caribbean Airways, the "flying islands". Really ticks me off that AA has never done a "retro-livery" for TC as they have done for their other namesakes.
Thanks Gene! So was your CV880 ride on an original color or the new Yellowbird treatment?
Also, being honest I need a little more footage of TC..I think I just have one short clip. Not enough to do mush with, so we shall see.
@@Starboard76 Believe it was the original livery. The plane had a long overnight in FLL as I remember each following day watching it take off over Harbor Beach in FLL and then very sharp turn north to JFK some time after the 11 am hour. In those days (63-64) there was only one other :jet" departure from FLL and that was a Northwest 720B which left in early evening I believe for Chicago.
Music for the Jet Set- album which every passenger recieved a copy during the first annual Jimmy Fund Airlift- 1966 Boston MA- NEA held this event featuring foliage flights over central and southern New England- Cctober 1966, with the brand new FH-227C aircraft- 377NE, which I flew aboard for this event. My late uncle gave me a nearly birthday present for this event- my first ever airplane flight.
Aesome Uncle..I could have use one..just one of those and I'm sure my archive would be much bigger!
A Northeast L 1011 would have been an amazing sight.
I flew one from Boston's Logan International Airport to Amsterdam on April 28th,2000(1915Est) to Amsterdam
I sure miss those old loud and smoky jets. I was born in 63, grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, lived in the flight path of the airport and remember seeing these yellow birds and other jets flying really low coming in for landings. My dad would also take us out to the airport and park and just watch planes takeoff and land.
You probably saw my dad landing. He started w/NE in 1966 and was based out of BOS, and FLL.
I just saw a yellow Spirit aircraft landing at FLL, which led me to this video.
The airline liveries of 2022 are so bland and GENERIC. The airlines have taken the CHEAP WAY OUT by painting their fleet all WHITE and simply adding a tail motif in color! These YELLOWBIRDS and BRANIFF were so Colorful and SPECIAL !
I remember the Yellow Birds in Bangor ME when I was a kid. Good video
A Convair 880! Cool !
Unfortunate, the beautiful yellow got smudged from the carbon engine exhausts !
I flew a yellow bird to florida in 1970
Hey, there, Starboard76! I have a question. Can you recall an airline ad that featured the hit song "Yellow Bird"? If so, who was the airline? I'm in my 60s and seem to remember that song from an airline commercial. Can you help me?
That has to be this one, yellow bird was NE’s moniniker in the industry
Yellowbirds... We make your vacation fun! Yellowbirds... Our service is Number One! WOW Our seats are wide! Lots more room inside! Food is cooked on board, have your faith restored! SO, Let's fly away, in the sky, away- Yellowbirds are more FUN! 😊 That's my recollection of the Yellowbirds tv ad for NE 😊
I flew Northeast Yellow Bird to Bermuda in 72
My Dad Work For NE in Boston Till Merger!
The first YellowBird 880 shot is INDEED @ PHL!
My sister and her black friend were staying in a hotel and the hotel owners wouldn't let her go in the pool
Didn't they have a colored pool?
I am sorry, but all the yellowbirds were painted all yellow.
