The Grapes were one of the best bands in the '60s and after, and high ion my top ten bands of all time. Their music never gets old. It is timeless and yes, Peter, a lot of fun. Thank you more than I have words to express it.
Amazing - thank you for this interview! I was at the early 1990s gig. It was at the Cotati Cabaret in Cotati CA, and Peter recounted the story of going down to get Bob Mosely from under the bridge off I5. The band sounded great, and we had no idea we were seeing an historic reunion, however brief. I think the band performed as The Melvilles.
I loved The Moby Grape Before Any Other San Fran Band,,Awesome Musician's with Awesome Music,,And Right On!! with 3 🎸Guitars leading the scene was monumental,,I still listen all the time to the old MobyGrape,,,I wanna add that Ms.Arwen Lewis has some Cool Music too! Excellent Interview✌🏼Thanks Moby Grape🙏🏼
Now that they have the rights to their name and music back, they should put out quality reissues for their LP's, unreleased and live material, etc. The demand has got to be there.
I really wish they would. Been trying to get those last round of Sundazed reissues from 07 that go for hundreds of dollars. Damn that Katz for screwing them so bad. It’s a crime that the first album is so hard to find.
I totally agree with Peter when he states what he thinks of their recordings! Other than the first, none truly protrayed the talent of this.fantastic musicians! Grape deserved so much mor than they ever received! Skippy and Bob could not deal with all the hostillities and chaos of the management issues!
I don't mean any offence to Peter Lewis or the rest of the Grape but as an 12 year old in 1967 I took one look at this album cover and thought "this looks like one rich kid (Peter) was supporting a bunch of talented Grunges". It seems I was right. Music brought us all together in those days.
Bob was a soulful person and never crazy, he was in situations that he didn't want to.deal with! If the Bands downs weren't so continuous and deception haunting he and the rest of.the.band would have been at the top!
It was interesting. Moby Grape 69 might have been their best "produced" and good for 1969. The debut album album is still their best. 20 Granite Creek was not bad either. Jerry Miller could´ve been a good Nashvile studio player. Give Moby Grape credit , they never quit after disasters.
What Peter said about the ultra view of SF psychadelic rock as THE answer to life everafter was so correct. I thought being in our band in those days was fun, and had NO answers to anything EXCEPT fun and entertainment. The problem with adding drugs to the whole scene is they tend to make the musicians philosophers; zealots w/o knowledge, hypocrites as hippies.
First time I saw them I was so blown away I had to go see them again just to see if they were really that good. The second time was just as good. Then the troubles started; the 3rd time they were on a bill at Fillmore East with BB King, and one guy would start a song while the others would be playing something else. They were just awful. The magic was gone. They coulda been contenders.😔
One of the main reasons I never wanted to be a professional musician is because, in general, the music business is so full of crooks. Katz ruined arguably the most talented band to come out of the mid-60s SF scene. If there's a hell, I hope he is roasting. I grew up in SF and lost count of how many times I saw Moby Grape. This was a great interview but a really cautionary tale for those musicians who want to make it big.
I learned EVERY note on the first album. I was there at the Fillmore when the back cover photo was shot (big red balloon). The Moby Grape story makes me hate the music business. A true horror and pathetic nightmare. I did a record and tour with the first band signed to EMI America (Spellbound) and that spit me out of the music business permanently. Just the world’s most evil horrible people in the music business.

Thank you, you have made my day. Biggest fan of Moby Grape and Peter Lewis. What a great talent. Thanks again.

Godspeed Jerry Miller and Skip Spence.
Peter Lewis played an excellent fingerpicking style. Listen to his snaky lines on Eight O'Five. Brilliant.
Thanks for doing the interview it inspired me to pull out my MG albums clean and play them. It’s been quite a long time since I heard them.
A fascinating conversation, great stuff!
Thank you for listening!
I had forgotten about the shooting of the bird on the album cover...it was blurred out on the copy we had. I loved the Grape.

This is great! Love the stories. Candid
thank you for listening!

Jerry next please!
That was an interesting, but hard listen. Peter jumps all over the place with his stories. Thx anyway. :)

Ultimately the entire music industry is run by members of his genetic/ideologic tribe, potentially all self serving to one degree or another.
