While deployed overseas, our local shopkeep has ran out of envelopes and I thought sending mail back to the States would be impossible. But while navigating through UA-cam I found your video and used this very technique to mail to my family. (You can imagine how happy my mother was to hear from her "little boy"). Before I had joined the U.S. Marine Corps, I had never attempted writing a single letter. When I went to Basic Training, our only form of communication was via letters (with a few minor exceptions). Fast forward later and letter writing has become a favourite hobby of mine. Special Thanks from the U.S. Marines overseas!

You'll just need to make sure you find a good way to seal it for modern postal delivery that doesn't damage the contents of the letter (traditional wax seals are too brittle, modern supple wax seals tend to stick very well to the paper and don't crack open).

I was looking for a more modern fold then I stubbled across this video, sir this is legendary knowledge and I'm gonna make sure to give this a try in the future. I had no clue that Francis Marion had written letters like such and I'm definitely gonna have let my father know about that small nerd fact.
Just what I was looking for! I used to have a friend who was an avid pen pal, and always loved how she folded her letter but never felt the need to. The other day I got some pretty letter paper set, but the envelopes where so much smaller, so this was very useful!

Thank you it is a wrapping gown or banyan of the 18th century. Pick an original letter from history and try and practice the letterforms, that is the best way to learn. Thats what I did. Its really not calligraphy but just 18th century penmanship
A year late but I fold letters the same way. Your penmanship is impeccable! I am currently working on mine it is terrible compared to yours but a work in progress none the less. I just found out today what "hand canceling" is so that your wax seal envelope won't go through a machine, and possibly damaging the wax seal. I recently folded a letter into an envelope using a slightly different method. Differences: I put the seal on the inside, to the left of the signature line. I used a decorative decal to seal the letter on the outside. I haven't heard yet from the recipient regarding whether the letter got through the post; the size of the letter when folded into an envelope was approximately 3" x 4". I have sent letters with a wax seal on the flap, but one was returned with the seal destroyed by the USPS processing machine, so I don't put wax seals of the outside of an envelops anymore....
That’s clever! I am folding these from historical examples before the advent of modern postal processing machines. When I mail these I slip them into bubble mailer envelopes

Actually the Bishop Mark IV is the first two letters of the month of JUNE. June was spelled in the old style with J being the I in IUVE and the U is V as was also the style on Bishop Marks. A little bit backwards from what we are used to seeing these days isnt it? Thank you, Keep writing!
To modern eyes yes it does look like a 4. But in the period these bishop marks were often using the old spellings with upper case J and an I And the U looking like Vs. Hence IVNE is shortened to IV. Period examples show this A’s should our reproductions! The Bible I read from is a copy of the 1611 King James Bible and today the superscript for my reading says “Iohn beheaded” for example

You said it can be quite tricky to get the paper into the little pouch that you created. Wouldn't it help if you fold over the corners of the larger piece a bit more, so you get / \ instead of | | ? Or do you do it that way because that's how you saw it done with real letters and want to stick to authenticity? PS: I LOVE your handwriting!!

@@pumpkintown I have no fancy handwriting yet (it's better than a doctor, buuut sometimes I can't read my own text after a month or so when seeing the same paper again 😅) So I will have to look up tutorials for fancy and legible writing, and maybe buy some specialized pens (because I use ballpoint pens if I ever write something down at this moment). Still a lot of work to go to even come close to your level!

Some have but I wouldn’t test it. I send mine in a bubble wrapped envelope in hopes the seal arrives intact. Good question. If you do try it take in into the post office and request it to be hand cancelled

No sir it’s what I used on the video. 8.5 by 11”. Sometimes I cut one inch off of the length or width first so it doesn’t look like a modern cut or size paper, try a sheet of typing paper or copy paper along with video to get the folds right and practice! You can do it! David G
I agree to some extent. But, Efficiency isnt the goal here. It is historical accuracy. This is one way original letters were folded. On other videos I show other methods that are also period and wont reveal the contents of the letter. Check out my anatomy of the 18th century letter. Most of us writing 18th century letters arent trying to hide the contents necessarily anyway. The best way is to fold the two halves all the way to the inside and overlap. Then the contents cant be seen! Thanks for the observation.
I’m not quite sure what you mean. This is a technique that is historically accurate and a common way everyday letters were sealed for a hundred years or so. It isn’t so much about being ugly as it is accurate. Do you have a video of yours that shows a more interesting way to fold your letters? I write letters to replicate those of the past accurately.

You did a lovely job and I remember writing notes to my best friend in high school in the 80s and we'd have these intricate ways to fold our notes. I think the Bishop mark date is for April the fourth month of the year. IV, June is VI in Roman numerals. Fun video though. Great penmanship.

@@pumpkintown I think she means that she would like to do that, but it probably wouldn't turn out as nicely as yours did...I may be wrong, but that's how I read the comment to which you are replying here.
You did a lovely job and I remember writing notes to my best friend in high school in the 80s and we'd have these intricate ways to fold our notes. Perhaps it was a little throwback to the olden days. :) I enjoyed your video very much and am going to look at your channel to see what other interesting things you've posted.
